Armored Warfare launches its Tanks Reloaded balance patch and previews its immediate followup

It’s been a while since Armored Warfare first discussed its upcoming “Balance 2.0” adjustments for the game’s mechanics, but the first pass has been added to the game with patch 0.19. The patch adjusts tank gameplay extensively while simultaneously adding 26 new tanks to play. But that’s not all the patch includes; there’s also a new PvP map, two new PvE missions, a new Skirmish mode, and a new Global Operations match. That’d be enough for a patch even without all of the balance changes.

Also, that isn’t the end of the story; the game is already previewing its next major update, which will include more balance changes, a new Garage interface, another new PvE mission, and new UI elements. So the big stuff just keeps rolling along. You can check out a trailer for the most recent patch just below, and you already know what to look forward to after you’ve finished up with that.

Obsidian hands off Armored Warfare to My.com

Obsidian Entertainment has gotten out of the tank business, as the developer announced that it has handed off Armored Warfare in its entirety to Russian video game company My.com.

My.com was the publisher of the game, but from now on it looks as though the company will be doing double duty by handling the development of the lobby vehicle battler as well. Obsidian, which laid off several members of the dev team back in December, said that it wants to focus on its other titles, like Pillars of Eternity 2.

“We are grateful for all contributions made by everyone on the Armored Warfare development teams, past and present. The restructured Armored Warfare development team is continuing the current development and update plans and will be dedicated to deliver content to our worldwide players in the most consistent manner,” said My.com Publishing Director Yuri Maslikov.

Obsidian’s Armored Warfare team hit with layoffs

Obsidian Entertainment has announced layoffs for an unknown number of staffers working on military MMO Armored Warfare.

Gamasutra reports that the cuts are planned to “take effect early next year,” so they’ll only partly ruin Christmas, though it’s not yet known how many employees will be affected. Work on the game will continue.

Here’s the official Obsidian statement to the press, suggesting that My.com’s decision to move part of the game’s development to Russia is partially the cause:

“This week we let some of our developers on Armored Warfare know that they are being laid off early next year. The publisher of Armored Warfare decided to move a portion of the development of the product to their headquarters in Moscow. We remain extremely proud of Armored Warfare and all the work we have and will continue to put into it. None of the other products at Obsidian were affected by this. We wish our people the best, and are working with them to find homes with other developers.”

Armored Warfare is revamping every aspect of gameplay with ‘Balance 2.0’

A casual glance at the information available seems to indicate that Armored Warfare has not lit the world on fire. But the development team is most certainly not giving up on the game; instead, they’re making it something much better than it has been through balance. The extensive mechanical retool is being dubbed “Balance 2.0” and has an enormous amount of system information available for everyone so that all can see the problems with the game’s mechanics before and what’s being done to improve the game for everyone.

One of the major goals for the new balance update was to ensure that lower tier vehicles remain a viable threat for higher tier vehicles while still making the higher tiers a tangible improvement over the earlier counterparts. There’s also several vehicles changing their designation and several smaller tweaks to make the game’s core mechanics viable in moment-to-moment gameplay. Really, there’s too much to sum up in a few sentences; if you’re a fan of the game and have the time to read a detailed dissection of how the game is shifting, you should sit down and start reading.

Betawatch: Valiance Online moves into alpha (October 7, 2016)

When City of Heroes closed, fans moved on to many places, one of which was the “Plan Z” category of games that were meant to make spiritual sequels. Valiance Online is one such game, and it has announced both its launch business model and its upcoming alpha. Congratulations to the team on that one!

Of course, that was hardly the only bit of test-based news this week. Don’t believe me? Why not have a peek at some more stories, then?

  • The open beta for AdventureQuest 3D is kicking off on October 18th. Mostly. Some platforms will get it before others. That’s still open beta, but it makes sense to hedge bets, sort of.
  • Trion announced that RIFT’s Starfall Prophecy expansion will enter open beta on October 13th.
  • Bless Online is starting its closed beta! In Russia. Not here. Put down the pitchforks.
  • Wild Terra is wilding (yes, I know, that’s not a verb) its way on to Steam on December 1st, complete with PvP and skill revamps before then. There’s nothing to indicate that this will include adding giant robots to the game, but there’s nothing to indicate it won’t, either.
  • SamuTale is in closed alpha and just added an update full of horses. How many horses? All the horses. And you should stay on those horses because otherwise roving bands of horse death will descend on them. I wish that was a joke.
  • Eco‘s next alpha update is being bumped to October 24th to finish refining everything and accurately modeling the interplay of biomes. So you’ll have to wait a little while longer on that.
  • It’s also the first anniversary of Armored Warfare‘s open beta, which… well, it seems like that’s the point when you’d just call it “launch,” but be that as it may. There are events to accompany that, because of course there are.

And as always, there’s a list of games below covering the stuff that’s in various test phases around the MMO universe. Is there something missing that should be there, or something that quietly shifted phases without us noticing? Let us know down in the comments.
