Path of Exile’s War for the Atlas expansion opens December 8

It may feel as if Path of Exile just came out with its The Fall of Oriath expansion, but that was last August. The time is quickly approaching for the next one! If releasing expansions were an Olympic event, Grinding Gear Games would win the gold medal every time. This studio delivers loads of new content like clockwork.

Now, I could sit here and heap praise all day, but I know you want to learn about all about expansion number… some big number. Lucky for you, I sat down with Producer Chris Wilson and got a tour of the goodies coming our way. So what is this next expansion and its accompanying new league about? It’s a sequel to Atlas of Worlds!

In September 2016, players were introduced to the world atlas, filled with end-game maps to complete on the way to fight the ultimate boss, The Shaper. On December 8th, this Atlas will be redesigned with significantly more maps and a second ultimate boss that is vying for control in War for the Atlas. And the new Abyss Challenge League starts up as well. Learn more about it all and watch the official trailer below!

Path of Exile promises improvements to the Atlas system

In a development manifesto for Path of Exile’s relatively new Atlas, the team at Grinding Gear Games identifies some of the problem areas with the system and lays out what it will be doing to improve them. At least four major changes to the Atlas will be coming with an undated patch.

“The Atlas system introduced in Atlas of Worlds has been a huge success. Players in both permanent and challenge leagues have enjoyed exploring, unlocking and crafting the Atlas. When any big system is released, it is hard to get everything right in the first pass,” the team said.

Speaking of patches, 2.4.0f dropped last week, bringing some bug fixes, an autoreply command, and several new “amazing” microtransactions for the game’s store. These latter additions include lightning armor, the acid magma orb, and the tentacle caustic arrow. See them in action after the jump!

Path of Exile’s Atlas of Worlds expansion is officially live [Updated]

Path of Exile’s Atlas of Worlds expansion is official live. The countdown ticker rolled over at 4 p.m. EDT. Time to get in there!

Back in August, Massively OP’s MJ Guthrie spoke with Grinding Gear Games about the many new endgame maps, the Essence league, and new loot, so that’s a good starting place if you’re just diving back in to see just how good the enhanced performance is. Don’t forget to scope out the patch notes while you download that 2.6GB patch!

Update! The servers are having issues. “Our launch has uncovered a big problem where our game instances are taking up ten times as much memory as they did previously on our servers,” says GGG told players this afternoon. “This is significantly affecting our realm capacity and we have had to impose a queue to prevent users being disconnected while playing. We are working on a solution. We do not have a timeframe yet but will try to get the realm stable and high-capacity as soon as possible. We’re very sorry about this! Hopefully you’re enjoying the league and new Atlas content if you have managed to log in successfully.”

Check out Path of Exile’s Atlas of Worlds expansion patch notes and trailer

Path of Exile’s Atlas of Worlds expansion is almost here: In fact, it drops tomorrow. Earlier this month, Massively OP’s MJ Guthrie spoke with Grinding Gear Games about the many new endgame maps, the Essence league, and new loot:

“In Atlas of Worlds, the map instances are actually all interconnected on one giant atlas. This web has a number of different paths to get to the center, where players can finally face The Shaper. There are four themed starting zones on the atlas to begin the journey, one on each corner. But the pathways branch out in various ways, so starting on one corner does not force you into facing one specific guardian. [I]t is definitely possible to work through the entire map and acquire all four guardian key parts yourself, but since certain items will only drop on certain areas of the map, most players will probably prefer to focus on their favorite maps and specialize in a certain quadrant of the map and then trade others for the remaining key parts.”

The studio has since been talking up its plans for improved performance. The patch notes and skill tree info are out now, and GGG has a little teaser trailer up in addition to the original; we’ve tucked it below. Will you be playing?

Path of Exile’s Atlas of Worlds expansion launches September 2

It’s nearly that time again — time for the next Path of Exile expansion! Few games can boast an expansion schedule that runs like clockwork, but PoE does so with new leagues every three months and expansions every six. Because of that, players already knew approximately that the next expansion and league would start sometime around September. Now we have an exact date: September 2nd. And we also now have the details of both!

I sat down with Producer Chris Wilson to learn all about this next expansion, dubbed Atlas of Worlds. The main crux of the expansion is adding to the maps at end game, both in number and in story elements. And the next league, which debuts on the same day of the expansion, is called Essence league. Here, you can get the details on both.
