Battleborn’s updates come to an end after its next patch

The only really good news for Battleborn fans is that the end of updates does not mean the end of everything for the game. The servers will still be up, you can still play the game, all of that stuff is still there. But the game’s update stream is dropping out altogether following the game’s fall update, so you had best hope everything you want out of the game is in there, because there will be no more.

For those of you who have forgotten, Battleborn was a team-based hero shooter that happened to launch very close to another team-based hero shooter just over a year ago. The public chose the victor in that particular contest rather emphatically, and it never managed to pick up the traction or critical mass to avoid its slow slump. Our condolences to any fans who had hopes that were never realized for the title.

Battleborn boss denies free-to-play plans

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has denied a Kotaku report that Gearbox is about to take its flagging shooter Battleborn free-to-play within a couple of months. The publication had cited an anonymous source familiar with plans for the game, backing it up with the steadily falling price of the game and the revival of Evolve following its conversion.

But Pitchford denounced the story as “reckless” on Twitter.

He also clarified that the company “has some unannounced plans to do a trial version of the game that would be free and from which retail can be purchased along with DLC” and that it was likely not a timed demo but that plans hadn’t been finalized.

Battleborn patches in premium skins and currency

Quick question: What does Overwatch have that Battleborn doesn’t? If you answered “Winston,” you are correct, but that’s not the point. If you answered “players,” your snark is appreciated, but that’s still not the point. If you answered “the option to pay money for skins and taunts,” you are correct, but you won’t be correct after the June 16th patch adds in a premium currency that can be bought for real money and exchanged for skins and taunts.

The new skins are more than just the color swap variety and cost 420 Platinum, while taunts cost 230 Platinum. Platinum cannot be earned through gameplay, only bought; 230 Platinum costs $1.99, while 700 Platinum costs $4.99. There’s no random element to the unlocks, just the cost of the individual items; whether that’s a net positive or a drawback for you is left for you to decide.
