Eternal Crusade patches in melee balance and matchmaking improvements

Considering that Eternal Crusade takes place in a very far-flung future, you could be forgiven for thinking that the game was set long after the point when firearms had become the only real method of hurting people. But it seems wrong to give your Space Marine a bunch of cool hacky tools like chainswords without making wading into melee the right choice at least some of the time. So it’s good news for players who like to hit things that the game’s most recent patch brings a lot of additional balance to all of these pointy bits of metal.

The patch also includes several matchmaking improvements as well as new map routes to allow more flanking opportunities. That’s in addition to various other balance tweaks, like ensuring that strafing isn’t as fast as running straight forward. Remember NosTale? Yeah, we didn’t either, but it’s a super old anime MMO that Gameforge is resurrecting and plopping down on Steam, apparently at some point in September.

“Swordsmen, Archers and Mages – each class offers a unique flavour and the opportunity to create your own personalised character. Tame wild animals, train them and use them tactically in battle. Other players and partners can also join you on your adventures. Take some time out from adventuring in your very own Miniland, a place where you can build your own home, look after the garden and party with your friends.”

Guild Chat: What to do if drug use impacts your MMO guild

Welcome along to Guild Chat, the column through which we all band together to help someone get on top of his or her guild-related issue: While I give my two cents here in the article, plenty of useful advice and different perspectives on the matter at hand emerge in the comments section. This time, reader Michael has a rather challenging issue to deal with that hinges on his guildmates’ drug use. Michael’s guild centres around an online friendship group that began in MOBAs and has recently been adversely impacted by the behaviour of several members of the group who live close to one another. These members have, for as long as Michael has known them, taken recreational drugs while gaming, but recently Michael has noted some personality changes and volatility that is uncharacteristic of his friends. He wants to know how best to deal with the issue and bring back positive relations in his guild.

You’ll find my two cents in the comments, but this is a massive topic that needs a measured approach. The submission does not include specifics of what drugs the friends are consuming and whether or not those substances are controlled or otherwise legally restricted in their country. I am in no way qualified to give professional advice about drug consumption and all advice given is in support of seeing a medical professional who specialises in drug dependence and addiction. Perfect Ten: Exploring MMORPGs from the far corners of the world

Have you ever noticed that while there’s an entire world out there, most all of the MMORPGs we discuss and play tend to either be ones crafted in the USA or imports from China or Korea? We even have a shorthand for this: “western” and “eastern” MMOs. We’re usually not talking about entire hemispheres with these references, but rather about categorizing three countries that are big into the MMORPG business.

But what about the rest of the world? Are all of these other countries so uncaring about this genre that they’ve never tried their hand at making an MMO? Of course not; as I’m about to show you, there are plenty of online RPGs that have been made in countries other than China, the USA, and South Korea. It’s just that for various reasons, those three countries ended up fostering concentrations of video game developers who knew how to create these types of games.

Academics and addiction experts weigh in on ‘pay-to-loot’ gambleboxes and lockboxes:

“Pay-to-win” is old news now — game designers’ new plan for hoovering all the cash out of our wallets is “pay-to-loot.”

According to IGN’s Nathan Lawrence, who dives into the topic today, that’s the term game psychologists are using to describe what online gamers have been derisively referring to as gambleboxes and lockboxes for years: You’re essentially buying chances at a thing, paying to roll the dice and let the RNG gods determine your reward, padding the game’s coffers all the while.

The gambling references aren’t accidental; one expert calls lootboxes a “poker machine-like experience,” while another points to the phenomenon as an exploitation of human nature:

A trimmed-down Star Citizen 3.0 alpha is coming this summer

You can stop fidgeting about what might or might not arrive in Star Citizen this year: Cloud Imperium has released its promised development roadmap for the rest of 2017. The studio stresses that quality will trump everything, that estimates are merely estimates, and that the schedule isn’t all-encompassing, but the words “3.0” and “persistent universe” and “planetary tech” have been enough to send Reddit into a tizzy of excitement.

It’s also sent the community into a tizzy of concern, as it appears the original plans for 3.0 have been trimmed down to get it out the door this summer, with many of its features pushed off to later patches later in the year. According to the newsletter, this is partly the result of Behaviour Interactive ending its subcontract for Cloud Imperium (you MMO folks will know it as the studio behind Eternal Crusade).

Eternal Crusade unleashes an Ork waaagh! campaign

If there’s one thing that has always been associated with the Warhammer franchise, it’s the terrible and overwhelming crusades that its greenskins occasionally unleash. Eternal Crusade is in the midst of one of these right now, offering players an opportunity to experience a waaagh! up close and personal.

From now through April 23rd, players can take part in a new Ork campaign called “A New Waaagh!” Participants should be forewarned that it will most likely be loud and chaotic, because that’s just the way that the bloodthirsty Orks like it.

Players can follow the progress of the campaign over the next week, and when it concludes there might just be a reward waiting for all of those who survived.

Guild Chat: Should I quit my MMO because of in-guild bullying?

Welcome along to another advice-filled edition of Guild Chat, the column through which the Massively OP community can both offer pearls of wisdom to fellow readers and air their own guild-related issues in front the masses in the hope that I can be of assistance while also crowdsourcing further great solutions from fellow MMO enthusiasts in the comments. This time, an anonymous reader wishes to discuss in-guild bullying and whether or not he should leave his MMO of choice in order to avoid further nasty confrontations. What started as brief periods of tension within his guild has now bubbled over into full-on personal attacks and our reader in need is unsure of the best method for dealing with the bullying he now faces from his ex-guildmates. Perfect Ten: More terminology the MMORPG genre needs

Many moons ago (so, a few months), I wrote a column about terminology that we need for the MMO genre. This made our Editor-in-Chief Bree extremely happy, and she informed me immediately that we would be going back to that well because it was such fertile ground for future exploration. Thus, for the past several weeks, every single time I write a Perfect Ten, she wonders if this is the one wherein I’m finally going to deliver more terminology.

The answer, this week, is yes. Partly because these are pretty easy to come up with, and partly because we have so many things we see over and over without specific names. It’s just a matter of giving these things words.

Here, then, are another ten bits of terminology we may immediately begin working into our lexicon. I’m happy to see that some of these are already becoming used, so that’s a good thing; now we’ve got a need for more. Place them in your appropriate forum signature immediately.

Eternal Crusade triples daily active users after free-to-play switch

Thanks to this past week’s introduction of a free-to-play model, Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade saw a massive jump in its player population. The team reports that concurrency doubled practically overnight while daily active users tripled to 44,619.

While this is certainly a cause for celebration among the team, the huge influx of players caused some technical issues that required a weekend of hard work to sort out. There’s still more to be done, as some guild services and the world map are being reworked to accommodate the larger crowd.

The team also said that it’s making a few adjustments to its Steam offerings, such as bundling together the four DLCs into a single purchasable package. Also: “Steam is working on the giftable version of the game for all players that bought the game before we launched the free version. Apparently, this is not straightforward but we’ll figure out something, or an equivalent.”
