Battle Bards Episode 85: Desert Calling

The desert is calling the Battle Bards, but are they willing to make the trek across these vast wastelands to see if the music is worthwhile or not? Guest co-host Scott joins Syl and Syp for a listen through several desert tracks to see what can be sifted from the sand. Is there treasure below or sun-bleached boredom?

Battle Bards is a bi-weekly podcast that alternates between examining a single MMO’s soundtrack and exploring music tracks revolving around a theme. MOP’s Justin co-hosts with bloggers Steff and Syl. The cast is available on iTunes, Google Play, TuneInPocket CastsStitcher, and Player.FM.

We’ve got Episode 85: Desert Calling and the show notes for you after the break!

Cabal 2's huge Calamity of War update hit by tiny delay

"Go big or go home, kid."

Cabal 2 must have heard these words as an impressionable youth and taken them to heart, culminating in this week's release of the Calamity of War update. Or at least it would be out already except that server gremlins ("technical difficulties") forced the team to temporarily delay the patch. At least players are getting some compensation in exchange for their patience.

Calamity of War is the second major content update for the fantasy MMO and patches in many important features. These include a new zone featuring the Great Wall, the debut of open-world PvP between nations, and a level cap bump to 50 (which also factors in additional class skills).

You can check out the update's trailer after the jump!

Cabal 2 goes on a reindeer rampage and adds new raid

Hullo folks! Ms. Horsehead here, encouraging one and all to head over to Cabal 2 to check out a couple of interesting events taking place!

There's war a-brewin' in the gods' last bastion, the Gray Canyon, and we need strong and brave adventurers like yourself to step up and give a good neigh about it! This new raid requires 24 players to defend the canyon from 12 waves of monsters, each one tougher and scarier than the last. You'll need to arrange your day around it, however, as the raid takes place at three set times every 24 hours.

Then there's a wacky reindeer rampage making a mess all over the world. They're not as prim and proper as us horses, not in the slightest. Kick those reindeer haunches for me, will ya? And if they happen to drop anything, it's all yours.

Perfect Ten: The biggest MMORPG news stories of 2015

For as long as Massively Overpowered exists, this will be one of the most memorable years in our site's history. It was the year that, after seven year of operation, old Massively got abruptly shuttered by AOL along with Joystiq and WoW Insider. It was also the year that the community rallied around us and Kickstarted the hell out of a new site, giving us the chance to create MOP as an independent MMO entity.

2015 will no doubt be remembered for a lot of other things too, of course. I don't think anyone could have predicted all of the craziness and unexpected turns that happened in our genre over the past 12 months. Let's take a walk back through the year-that-was to cover the biggest, strangest, and most exciting stories that we covered.

Massively OP's Best of 2015 Awards: Most Likely to Flop

Massively OP's end-of-the-year awards continue today with our most likely to flop in 2016 and beyond award.

Last year, Star Citizen took home this dishonor, leading to much discord in the comments. Star Citizen has yet to actually fully launch let alone flop, though, which is why we tack on the "and beyond." We also note that "flop" can mean lots of things, from outright sunset to financial ruin to simply not living up to insane hype. And we don't want anything to flop!

Don't forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end.

The Massively OP staff pick for Most Likely to Flop in 2016 and Beyond is...

Cabal 2's challenge mode is live today

Forget gratitude; Cabal 2 wants you to spend Thanksgiving fighting each other in its new Challenge Mode. You won't even have to mention politics or religion. People will fight you regardless!

With the new Challenge Mode, players will go toe-to-toe with waves of even more powerful bosses in timed battles. After defeating each boss, time is added to the clock, giving warriors the ability to slay multiple bosses as they work to beef up their ranking in their fight for survival.

Along with rankings, players will be rewarded with the introduction of Runes as they complete each Challenge Mode dungeon. Runes offer players an increase in player stats and are upgraded to become even more powerful and useful through the Rune Transformation System. Additionally, warriors can earn Runes through challenge points, which are also given as a reward for completing Challenge Mode dungeons. Claim victory in the Challenge Mode dungeons to build a collection of Runes and gain the strongest of attributes.

Check out the new trailer and screenshots!

Cabal schools you in the Art of War

PvPers have even more to enjoy, starting with the Memoria Chrysos battlefield, which will host up to 100 players a faction who will then fight over objectives. Cabal II brings in battle arenas, ranking system on Thursday

Gladiator combat is the focus of Cabal II's upcoming Trial of Champions patch, which is slated to go live on September 10th.

Thursday's patch will add in two new arenas: a monster arena for PvE players and a PvP battle arena. The monster arena will pit players against waves of mobs to see how long they can go without falling.

To up the ante of these activities, Cabal II is also including a ranking system that will track progress in both arenas and the PvP battlegrounds. Players who do exceptionally well in these areas will be rewarded at the end of each season.
