WeMade Entertainment invests in ArcheAge’s XLGAMES

XLGAMES has received a vote of confidence in the form of some welcome investment from fellow Korean developer (and publisher) WeMade Entertainment. MMO Culture is reporting that WeMade recently sold off over $178M in Kakao shares and then turned around to snap up an unknown quantity of shares in the ArcheAge developer.

This is good news for XLGAMES, which ended 2016 on a down note after announcing that its Civilization Online was closing down following a year of Korean open beta. Now that the studio has an infusion of investment, perhaps we will see a new project emerge from Jake Song’s imagination factory.

Betawatch: Revelation Online lands in closed beta (November 4, 2016)

After a week’s delay, Revelation Online has arrived in closed beta. It even has a snazzy trailer to go along with it, which is cool. If you get tired of the content in the beta, you might be playing it a little too aggressively, but you can take heart in the fact that there’s also more content just around the bend in its native home. So that’s all good.

Oh, and there is indeed more news. Yes, this has been a busy time for betas. In no particular order:

Was there anything else? Oh, right, the list! There’s the list below with games that are currently in testing, and if some of those have slipped in a full cash shop without us noticing we’d appreciate you letting us know. That’d be cool of you.

Civilization (Online) is coming to an end

Remember all the grumbling when XLGames revealed Civilization Online at a big presser in New York and then told us it was launching in East Asia only? Welp, the game is coming to an end anyway.

XL CEO Jake Song broke the bad news to players on the official site, telling them that it was a difficult decision but that the studio plans to shut down the game service on December 6th. The cash shop and character info services shut down yesterday.

By the time it shuts down, it will have been in soft launch open beta only a year, though there’s a little hint that the game might return eventually as another of XL’s games “has the power to be reborn as a potential Civilization Online.”

Our condolences to affected staff and players.

The MOP Up: GTA Online makes every bullet count (December 13, 2015)

The MMO industry moves along at the speed of information, and sometimes we’re deluged with so much news here at Massively Overpowered that some of it gets backlogged. That’s why there’s The MOP Up: a weekly compilation of smaller MMO stories and videos that you won’t want to miss. Seen any good MMO news? Hit us up through our tips line!

This week GTA Online players got to play a new ammo-limited mode, two Lineage games were announced for mobile, Eternal Crusade streamers made fun of their own mistakes, Hearthstone talked about basic cards, and more!

Betawatch: Star Citizen’s universe expands (December 4, 2015)

The universe of Star Citizen is getting a bit bigger with the addition of 50,000 testers to its persistent universe. It also has a brand-new trailer if you want to see people getting out of spaceships and faffing about in space suits, which seems like the prelude to the most ridiculous installment of Grand Theft Auto ever. No one ever said you had to be a good citizen of the stars, right? (Dibs on that idea, incidentally.)

Other beta news? Ah, sure, why not?

Do we still have a list of games down below? Oh, yes indeed we do. Let us know if something has hopped test phases without us noticing in the comments!

Civilization Online offers two open beta trailers

The open beta for Civilization Online is starting on December 2nd in South Korea. Is it ever starting in the US? We still don’t know, although current plans do not seem to indicate that it will be. Would you like to watch a couple of trailers for the game regardless? Because we’ve got them down below.

The first trailer is very much just a straightforward trailer of the “dramatic music plays while vaguely game-related stuff happens” variety, while the second is more of a conceptual introduction featuring Jake Song and Sid Meier. It is also largely in Korean, so keep that in mind if you’re wondering why you can’t understand what’s being spoken.

Check out some Civ Online factions and gameplay videos

The next best thing to actually being in a beta is to watch someone play it, which both sates your curiosity and creates an unstoppable jealousy monster deep within your chest that threatens to burst out and go on a forum rampage.

We’re guessing that most of you haven’t been able to get hands-on time with Civilization Online, so to help out we’re going to point you to a series of excellent videos by Steparu that highlight different aspects of this genre mash-up.

After the jump you can watch PvE and PvP gameplay videos as well as a look at Civ Online’s various factions and outfits (and don’t forget to check out the recent G-Star trailer!). Those Egyptians! So risqué!

Betawatch: Closed beta explosion (October 30, 2015)

It’s a week of games entering closed beta. That is the joke here, if you want to call it a joke. Front and center, of course, is the long-awaited Overwatch beta, which you can join by… well, hoping. If you aren’t in it at this point, you’ll just kind of have to wait and hope that you get added in a subsequent wave. But there’s even more stuff going on in beta-land this week than that.

And what about all of those other games that we talk about every week? Well, they’re still in the list below here, as always. Check them out, and let us know if something has changed without us noticing. It happens from time to time.

Betawatch: August 7th, 2015

It’s time for the first Guild Wars 2 expansion beta weekend! Technically, it’s a public weekend, but the only parts of the public that can actually get involved are those players who purchased the expansion, which is a bit on the closed side. Still, at least players can rest assured that the expansion will launch this year.

This week has mostly been dominated by the onslaught of news from Gamescom, but there’s still some beta testing news in the mix.

And lo, there is a longer list past the break! Check it out, see if something slipped through testing without us catching it, you know how it be.

Leaderboard: Would you play Civilization Online?

XLGAMES isn’t bringing Civilization Online to western consumers. At least right now. Maybe XL and partner 2K will localize the title at some point, but as of today we’re reduced to looking longingly at gameplay videos and trying to figure out why global game companies insist on regional exclusives in 2015.

Assuming Civ Online did make it to the English-speaking world, would you play it? Vote after the cut! And don’t forget to tell us why or why not.

Civilization Online sums up its beta with a highlight trailer

Civilization Online’s oddball building-sim-plus-PvP gameplay is highlighted in a new trailer that serves as a bookend for the Korean closed beta test. XLGAMES has no plans to release the title in the west, where the developer is best known for ArcheAge and its lackluster reception along a rocky post-release road.

Civ Online looks to capitalize on the long-running strategy series that it’s named after, though gameplay differs in that each session lasts for about a week and features both cooperative empire building and group PvP attacks against enemy empires.
