Check out Black Desert Kamasilvia Part II’s Korean teaser trailer

Want a peek at Black Desert’s Kamasilvia Part II? We’re getting one today, and though it’s a tease for the Korean version of the game, which is getting the update this week, western players can stare into the more distant future of their version all the same. It’s a zippy fly-over, mind you, but it gives a glimpse of several upcoming level 50+ areas, including Gaipinrasia Temple, Woodring Forest, and Poly Woods. Wheeeeee!

Black Desert awakens the Striker, doubles karma loss for gankers

Awakening this morning in Black Desert is the still-relatively-new-to-the-West Striker class. “The Striker reaches a new level of mastery over the martial arts, gaining access to a wider range of close-ranged techniques,” Kakao says. “With this latest Awakening, Strikers level 56 and above will be able to use the Gardbrace weapon, famed for its ability to temporarily produce a copy of its wielder and double the onslaught of attacks in battle. Also enhancing the Striker’s combat are fire elemental skills, as well as throwing moves like Hell Break and Infernal Destruction.”

Also live with today’s patch? The Striker Awakening Release Event, new titles, doubled karma loss for gankers, and a new battle arena for level 50+ toons. And yes, Reddit and the official forums are mad that Kakao is essentially making it more painful to gank Steam nubs. “YOU’RE ACTUALLY KILLING THE OPEN WORLD PVP LMAO” and so on, although to be fair, others are pointing out the inevitable karma bombing exploits that will undoubtedly ensue.

Kakao is promising a stream Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. EDT all about the Striker’s Awakening. There’s also a sale on the game running through the Fourth of the July on Steam and the main site.

Black Desert introduces Kamasylve Tree event, improved player housing

Today’s Black Desert update boasts two headlining features. The first is the kick-off of the Growth of a Kamasylve Tree event, which runs to June 21st and serves as a hearty tease for the Kamasylve content.

“Do your part to help grow a Kamasylvia Tree, complete a short series of daily quests to contribute to the growth!” says Kakao. “Each day participants may complete 2 of these quests to receive one ‘[Event] Gift of a Spirit.’ Begin the daily quest ‘[Event] Sacred Energy of Spirit’ by visiting the NPC Cartima in front of the inn in Heidel to collect the event item Bowl of Spirit. Once you have collected this, take Bowl of Spirit to the NPC Herawen and use 10 energy to gain Energy of Spirit.” Then trek back to the tree to finish up and do your part bumping your server trees through their five stages. For rewards, of course.

The second update improves the interiors of player houses in Calpheon; Kakao has added staircases, new floors, higher ceilings, and smarter door placement in a number of homes. The update also includes a smattering of class changes, pattern tweaks, and the server-swapping cooldown timer fix.

Global Chat: Why FFXIV is the most newbie-friendly MMO

What’s the most newbie-friendly MMO? According to Pete at Dragonchasers, it’s Final Fantasy XIV. He’s been pretty impressed by the support structure that the game has in place for new and returning players.

“I don’t usually interact with other players in MMOs (ironic, I know) but when I was randomly invited into the Novice Network I accepted,” he wrote. “It’s a pretty active channel and at least for the short time I’ve been in it, quite civil […] This experience drew me out of my shell a bit, and by Sunday afternoon I’d dug out a bluetooth keyboard so I could talk in the Novice Network more easily. Overall the way FFXIV welcomed me as a player kind of re-kindled my love of MMOs.”

In this week’s MMO blogger roundup, we have essays on LOTRO’s attention span, the thought behind soloing in online games, and first impressions of Black Desert. Read on!

E3 2017: Black Desert confirms Xbox ports for 2018

We’ve known Black Desert was coming to consoles for a long time now; the first teases landed last year, with confirmation as recently as March. Kakao took the pre-E3 shows to announce that console for the imported sandbox is indeed happened, at least on Xbox One and Xbox One X, Microsoft’s long-teased $499 Project Scorpio powerhouse. While BDO will be an Xbone launch exclusive, it’s probably a safe bet to assume it’ll come to the more popular PS4 eventually too.

Expect the whole shebang early next year, after the launch of the X. The trailer’s down below.

One Shots: Walk of shame

From Zulika Mi-Nam’s Adventures in Tale of Toast:

  1. Log into a game to do some play testing.
  2. “Hey, look at these cutsie graphics and those childlike animations!”
  3. Kill some level 1 and level 2 bunnies rabbits and some loot drops right on the ground from time to time.
  4. Find a treasure chest with a level 5 baddie guarding it.
  5. Make that baddie chase me around a tree and out run him back to that chest and loot it and get away: “Haha this is easy and I got a badass level 5 sword… gonna save that for later.”
  6. Go to town sell my trash loot and head back out.
  7. Take on a level 3 mushroom: “Pfft no problem.”
  8. Gonna go for this level 4 bat: “Woah this could go either way… depends on who lands the next hit….yah! Loot sound! Wait, he is bouncing away… I’m dead… then what was that loot?”
  9. Respawns and looks at inventory: “That… that was the sword I was saving, and it is just laying out there on the ground now.”
  10. Do the walk of shame to retrieve my sword and turn to shake my childlike fist at that bat. “I’ll be back! You… you fooled me with your cutsieness.”

Black Desert’s patch today extends loyalty events with new rewards

This Black Desert penguin, complete with lens flare, would like to come home with you. He’s part of the game’s new round of loyalty attendance rewards, which will now run through the 4th of July holiday.

“Please be aware that you will not be able to summon 2 of the [Event] Lost Penguins at once in game. We advise you to either exchange them to get a higher tier version, (if you already own one) or pick your preferred one. (Even if they’re both super cute),” says Kakao.

Don’t like penguins? What kind of monster are you? Welp, BDO has hedgehogs in the cash shops too. You’re welcome.

Today’s update also includes experience changes, a new welcome package in the game store, and assorted bug fixes and balancing tweaks, including adjustments to live advancement quests. The Golden Artifacts event has also returned for the month of June.

Choose My Adventure: Exploring the purpose and plan of this community column

You are no doubt staring at the title image above and thinking to yourself that it really does not look like a Neverwinter screenshot. And you would be right; it doesn’t look like a Neverwinter screenshot because it isn’t a Neverwinter screenshot. My schedule has been hectic enough that rather than trying to cram in a rushed play session without much meat in it, I elected to have a brief delay and push the next Neverwinter installment back a week. Not to worry, though; it’s an extension, not a cancellation, and Neverwinter still will get its full four weeks in the spotlight.

Instead, I wanted to be a bit more meta and discuss a few things I see coming up in the comments from time to time as well as covering some ideas for the series moving forward. And yes, it contains polls for the compulsive voters in the audience, you charming folks.

Black Desert sells over 127,000 copies on Steam, adds three new servers with today’s patch

The first MMO hit of the summer is already upon us, as Black Desert’s debut on Steam has paid off in dividends. Thanks to the high-profile release and a 40% off sale, the fantasy title has moved over 127,000 copies to interested players.

It’s not just people purchasing the game but playing it as well. Steam charts note that there’s been high interest in Black Desert ever since it came to the platform, and the existing community said that it has seen an increase in the game’s population. BDO’s all-time record concurrency on Steam so far is 18,894. For comparison’s sake, H1Z1 peaked at 137K and Ark: Survival Evolved reached a little over 100K.

In its patch notes for today’s update, Kakao told players it has added an additional trio of servers. It’s a fairly modest patch by BDO standards, but it does introduce a nifty new travel event.
