Choose My Adventure: Grinding away in Black Desert

Let me talk to you, my friends, about grinding. Specifically, about how it gets a bad reputation that it doesn’t altogether deserve.

How does this connect to this week’s adventures in Black Desert? Well, because I wound up doing a fair bit of grinding. It wasn’t intentional or anything, since my designated goal this week was to just trek about and see the sights for a bit. But if you give me a camp full of goblins just sitting in my path, and you have me, a player who’s more than willing to give these things a shot on the basis that the worst possible outcome is that I die… well, I’m going to fight those goblins. I’m going to fight them a bunch.

And, I think, this was ultimately a good thing. Because while the game still has all of the problems that I’ve seen to bother me up to this point, the grinding of goblins was a notable island of things feeling fresh, crisp, and responsive. It’s almost as if I enjoy the game more when I’m away from the things of man.

Black Desert’s Striker kickpunches his way onto Korean servers

The newest Black Desert class is no slouch in bringing meaty beatdowns to foes, as some players are discovering this week. The kick-punching martial arts Striker has landed on Korean servers, and it is only a matter of time before the rest of the world gets to experience the glory of his kinetic attacks.

As we wait not-so-patiently for the Striker to arrive, Black Desert players in the west can at least tiptoe among the tulips — and take a few pictures for the game’s Spring Tulips Screenshot Contest. The contest is part of a small patch this week and will run from now through April 25th, with the winner’s submission earning a place on the game’s loading screens (among other prizes).

Check out the Striker’s launch trailer below!

The Daily Grind: Which MMORPG has seen the most improved graphics over the years?

In each of our articles about Black Desert’s upcoming graphics upgrade, there have been a slew of comments about how the game doesn’t really need it, puzzled remarks that the game is already pretty enough, and hopeful requests for Pearl Abyss to tone down the lens flares or at least allow us to turn off all the bells and whistles. It’s been interesting to witness — I know we’re still in the middle of a massive renaissance for retro graphics, but in general, hardcore MMORPG players are total graphics snobs, to the point that many older games, from Ultima Online and Anarchy Online to World of Warcraft and EVE Online, have all taken a stab at improving their graphics (and in some cases, adjusting their art styles too).

Not all of them have done so successfully, of course; many City of Heroes players, for example, couldn’t make use of the upgrades, and Ultima’s Kingdom Reborn was plagued with issues.

For today’s Daily Grind, I’m wondering: Which MMORPG has seen the most improved graphics over the years?

Pearl Abyss might be hiring for a Black Desert Southeast Asia localization

It’s always tricky to suss out unannounced plans for a developer from nothing more than job postings, but that’s never stopped anyone before. Pearl Abyss, the developer behind Black Desert, is looking for a Southeast Asia Business PM right now. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of at least one regional language, prompting a question of whether or not the company is planning to expand the game into the region with official servers for Southeast Asia.

Obviously, nothing has yet been announced, up to and including a question of whether or not the hire would be relocated or if it would be a remote position. But there’s also nothing saying that the company won’t open a new branch office in the region to oversee a localized version. At the moment, all that can be said for certain is that a watchful eye has been turned upon Southeast Asia, and if you live in that region… well, you may have a localized version of the game soon.

Black Desert promotes free trial with new ‘Friends’ trailer

In case you’ve somehow forgotten that Black Desert (inarguably one of the prettiest MMORPGs on the market and the winner of our MMO of the 2016 award)– is going to get even prettier later this year, Kakao has a new trailer out this week to remind you. The 33-second spot is part of the studio’s campaign to get people into the game and playing with the game’s seven-day free trial. “Make friends,” the “Friends” trailer suggests. Hotpants tease sold separately!

Choose My Adventure: Learning to appreciate Black Desert

First and foremost, I’d like to thank the many people who informed me about how to hide the UI in Black Desert. I shouldn’t have needed to be told that, it seems, but I did, and I really do appreciate the insight; in this case, I’d rather be thought a fool and get the answer to my questions than deny it and continue on in ignorance. So now my only real problem is my usual inattentiveness about when I should take screenshots, not failing to understand how.

This coincides nicely with starting to appreciate the game a little bit more. The first week felt rather unclear, but now that I’ve spent a bit more time with the game I’m starting to grasp what it’s trying to do. I’m still not entirely sure if I like all of it, of course, but at least I feel that I’m able to determine that based on the actual game rather than my confusion over what the game wants from me.

Black Desert’s Dark Knight awakens as spring blossoms with new goose egg event

As promised, the popular Dark Knight class has awakened in Black Desert with today’s weekly update. “Her awakening weapon, named ‘Vediant’ is a set of phantom blades that are magically summoned in different sizes and grants the Dark Knight special life draining powers as well as powerful ranged offensive abilitie,” Kakao writes. “With her Vediant, she can dazzle her enemies by swiftly dashing through the battlefield while freely delivering powerful melee and ranged AoE attacks. Skillful players can replenish mana, and deal bonus damage by carefully chaining attacks and skills.”

Today’s patch also showers the game world in tulips and cherry blossoms as part of the spring event and kicks off the “Golden Flondor Goose Egg Event.”

Black Desert fans should make sure to take a peek at our ongoing Choose My Adventure series, which this month features a deep-dive of BDO, as well as last weekend’s massive infodump on the upcoming Striker class and Kamasylvia content.

Black Desert’s 2017 plans include Striker class, climbing, and airships

If you happen to be a Black Desert player, then this weekend is bound to be a time of joy and celebration for you. The team announced its development plans for 2017 on Friday night’s super late-night stream, and it is a bounty beyond belief.

The fun begins with the game’s newest class, the Striker. The Striker is a martial arts-using class who favors combos and smacking things down with his bare hands. The class is going into testing in Korea soon with no specific date announced for the west.

The announcement of the Striker was just the beginning, however. The team said that it’s working on a climbing skill, the game’s very first airship, combat sailboats, a class rebalance, new zones, improved guild features, healing unicorns, upgraded graphics (without affecting FPS), a trading simulation, and the second part of Kamasylvia.

Check out the trailers, images, and the rest of the announcement below!

Choose My Adventure: Muddling through the start of Black Desert

After my first week of playing, I don’t know if I actually like Black Desert very much. I also don’t know entirely if it’s very good at what it’s trying to do. These are not the same thing.

My first experiences with the game were not exactly what I would call positive, but little of that had to do with the game itself (it’s hardly the game’s fault that one of my credit cards did not want to properly activate, for example, and while that made purchasing the title more annoying that’s really just my own problem). Once I actually got in and started playing with the character creator, though, it… well, it still had problems. But it’s an open question whether those problems are the fault of the game itself or just the problem of who is playing. And I also wonder how many of those will change over time as I do get accustomed to the game.

But, hey, at least it can’t be accused of being generic.

Black Desert plans Dark Knight awakening, weekend content reveal

The Black Knight awakens in Black Desert next week. Kakao says she’s become “one of the most popular classes” since her launch in March.

“Her awakening weapon, named ‘Vediant’ is a set of phantom blades that are magically summoned in different sizes and grants the Dark Knight special life draining powers as well as powerful ranged offensive abilities. With her Vediant, she can dazzle her enemies by swiftly dashing through the battlefield while freely delivering powerful melee and ranged AoE attacks. Skillful players can replenish mana, and deal bonus damage by carefully chaining attacks and skills.”

Meanwhile, the company is teasing a big content reveal, and it’s not Kamasylvia, although that’s coming too. Keep your eyes on the game’s official Twitch channel Friday night at 11 p.m. EDT for the whole scoop. Or, y’know, go to sleep and come read about it here Saturday morning.

Black Desert gooses its players in this week’s patch

MMO got your goose? Now you can get it back with this week’s Flondor Goose Egg event in Black Desert.

Courtesy of the new 1.37 GB patch, the event has spawned goose eggs all over the place. If players find and turn these in to their creepy black spirit, they can then unlock an additional quest. Presumably, there are rewards sprinkled in there as well. The event starts today and will run through April 19th.

There’s a little more to the patch than that, of course. The team has made some improvements to the in-game marketplace, fixed dueling mechanics to make it a bit safer from griefing, and allowed housing items to be placed on wall shelves. Oh, and now there are watermarks on all of your screenshots because someone out there must have put that in the suggestion box. Was it you, George? We totally know it was. Thanks a LOT.
