Hellion invites you to decorate while you’re scrambling to survive in space

Carving out a niche of your own in the deep of space is part of the full Hellion experience. In a new dev diary, the team discusses how players can claim ships or outposts as their own, naming them and setting permissions for others to visit (or not). There is always the possibility of hacking another’s security system to gain unwanted access, however.

Once you own a ship, apparently it’s yours to decorate inside and out as you please: “While exploring the world of Hellion players will be able to find various customization items that can be placed inside ships and modules. Some of these include posters, pictures, emblems, logos, etc. In addition to premade items, players will also have the option of placing written messages.”

Can we cover this game with “MOP RULES” graffiti? Let’s make it happen, people! In fact, now’s a good time to jump into the game: The 0.1.12 patch is live today, and yes, it fixes the ship HUDs!

Make My MMO: Star Citizen’s Star Kitten, Project Gorgon’s gorgeousness (April 22, 2017)

This week in MMO crowdfunding, Star Citizen built on the contentious infodump of last weekend with the news that it’s running a contest to encourage backers to, well, bring in more backers. Those who do earn a chance to win the big prize (a free trip to Gamescom in Cologne, Germany) or the little prizes, and those are what have players scratching the heads in confusion, as they’re themed around Star Kitten, an in-universe character that appears to salute… Hello Kitty?

Meanwhile, Ashes of Creation picked May 1st for its impending Kickstarter, Project Gorgon got pretty (!), Shroud of the Avatar and Grim Dawn and Path of Exile all previewed upcoming content in videos, Crowfall penciled in more pre-alpha test dates, City of Titans dropped a lore bomb, Hellion previewed its crew quarters, and TUG updated backers on its progress.

Read on for more on what’s up with MMO crowdfunding over the last week and the regular roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’ve got our eye on.

Hellion wants its systems to be breaking down more

Hellion has a systems problem, in that its in-game systems are just too darn functional and well-maintained. That would be terrific news if you were a homeowner or a sane spaceship captain, but for a survival sandbox, it makes the “surviving” part insultingly easy.

This is why the team announced that it will be doing a full systems rebalance in the near future in order to gum up the works somewhat. “One of the problems at the moment is that most systems are something that you just switch on and then forget about,” the team said. “We aim to change this in a meaningful way. We want players to feel the difference between a ‘fully working’ and a ‘barely operational’ system, as well as how multiple systems function together and how problems with one system can cause a cascade that affects multiple parts of the ships and stations.”

The trick for the team is to have things decay and break down enough so that maintenance is a challenge and not a chore. Other projects on the team’s list include a UI revamp, making station modules feel more useful, and programming items to respawn in logical (and not random) locations.

The Survivalist: Massively OP’s guide to multiplayer survival sandboxes

Welcome to The Survivalist! Ya’ll might have noticed that I have gravitated a bit from my happy home of deep, immersive virtual worlds (possible due to the lack of them!) and have been tinkering about and enjoying time in various survival games. This isn’t as odd as you might think! One thing I love about sandbox worlds is the ability for your actions to matter in terms of shaping the world and carving out your place in it. Survival games have been allowing me just that with opportunities to build the world, from the society on it to structures in it to the even the physical world itself. And decisions definitely matter, bringing satisfaction and reward or disappointment and destruction.

I’m not alone in this appreciation of the survival genre, either. Many MMO gamers have joined mainstreamers by flocking to it lately as seen by the explosion of the available games. Those of you not on board yet might be wonder just what is so alluring about a genre that has many elements of MMOs but on smaller — and oft times privately managed — scale. As the weeks and months wear on, The Survivalist is going to explore all the nooks and crannies of the survival sandbox genre (and likely die many, many times in the process!), but today, we’re going to look at what players can jump into to test their survival skills. So here’s a guide to many options in the newest genre to take over our gaming sphere.

Hellion’s cinematic trailer cautions of the danger of space hijackers

In just two days’ time, the airlock will open to Hellion’s Steam early access launch. Before that happens, however, you might want to check out the official cinematic trailer to get an inkling of what you’re getting yourself into if you pick up this title.

The trailer presents a cautionary tale about space hijacking, as a group of miners respond to a distress call that (spoiler!) is more of a trap than an actual cry for help. If nothing else, the trailer indicates what kind of antisocial behavior players might be able to do in Hellion when they decide that working with each other isn’t as much fun as working each other over.

Check it out after the jump.

Watch devs play through the first 45 minutes of Hellion

The Steam early access launch for space survival sandbox Hellion is right around the corner on February 24th, but you won’t have to wait until then to get a good idea about how the game plays.

Yesterday, the creators of the game uploaded a video in which they show themselves playing 45 minutes of the sci-fi title. Instead of jumping into the middle of the game, the devs show everything you will expect to see from the very start of the game, including all of the hazards and challenges you’ll need to overcome right off the bat.

Check it out after the jump!

Betawatch: A city of City of Heroes successors (January 27, 2017)

The loss of City of Heroes brought motivated fans together to rebuild it, or at least to create a spiritual successor to the game. Three of those games showed off some nifty stuff this week. City of Titans gave us a look at some gorgeous hair, Heroes & Villains explained how it’s handling seamless zoning, and Ship of Heroes brought out a full-on character creation video. Now if only they could team up to provide us characters with great hair and a seamless city. (We’ll add in some combat later.)

Oh, is that not enough for you? Fine! Have some other beta news, then.

Meanwhile, there’s an even lengthier list of games currently in testing just below. Did something skip to a new test phase without us noticing? Is there a game on there that has opened its cash shop and is letting everyone play without future data wipes? Should pigeons be allowed to eat chili? Let us know about any of the above or something else altogether down in the comments.

Multiplayer survival sandbox Hellion will launch Steam early access on February 24

On Monday, we reported that survival sandbox Hellion had delayed its planned early access from January to February. Today, Zero Gravity has further clarified the delay: Hellion is now expected to his Steam early access on February 24th. Hellion’s the multiplayer-only, PvP-centric one with gorgeous graphics and great trailers, in case you’ve forgotten since last year, when it was first announced.

“The Hellion Early Access build will offer hand-crafted content with procedurally generated elements that will create a meaningful narrative as well as make the gameplay varied and replayable beyond player interaction. In order to survive, colonists will have to loot and fight for limited life support resources, such as oxygen and food, as well as repair and fuel their deteriorating base station and spaceship. Cooperation with other players, at least temporarily, will be unavoidable in order to run bigger ships and survive in the hostile environment. However, in the Hellion galaxy it’s every man for himself, so betrayal sometimes is the best strategy in surviving the adversities of space and conquering the galaxy.”

Hellion delays Early Access launch until February

PvP-based survival sandbox Hellion has been taking aim at a January Early Access launch for quite some time now, but it looks as if that target was a little optimistic after all. The development team announced today that in order to make sure the game is at the highest possible standard, it will be launching into Early Access in February rather than the remainders of January.

The exact launch date will be announced on January 25th, which will also provide a decent idea of whether the game has a little more work needed or if it may well get delayed again. Still, February’s not that far away now; you can probably make it another month without tearing out your hair in frustration, right?
