Make My MMO: Dual Universe vrooms into another pre-alpha test (October 21, 2017)

This week in MMO crowdfunding, the much-anticipated indie sci-fi sandbox Dual Universe dropped a starship-load of tutorials on ship construction, the interface, territory, and more. They’re aimed at folks in the pre-alpha, another weekend of which kick off earlier today – it’s a nice chunk of backers, if the activity graph posted to Twitter earlier is any judge. (Cheers, Cotic!)

Meanwhile, HEX launched on PS4, Star Citizen confirmed it’s still granting refunds but isn’t launching S42 this year, Legends of Aria wrapped up its alpha, and Albion Online launched a new trial program.

Hearthstone classic card nerf patch arrives

Get ready to adjust the meta once more, as today’s Hearthstone patch pronounces several basic and classic cards guilty of being too useful and popular. The sentence? Hefty nerfs across the board, of course!

The nerfs include the reduction of Innervate’s effect, a less effective Murloc Warleader, and an increase in the mana cost for Fiery War Axe, Spreading Plague, and Hex.

“Too many basic and classic cards played in individual decks means less fun when new expansions are released,” Blizzard said earlier this month. “Cards in the basic set serve several purposes in the game, so we would rather make balance adjustments to them instead of moving them to the Hall of Fame, like we have done for cards in the classic set.”

Hearthstone nerfs staple cards to save them

Sometimes you have to hurt the cards you love in order to save them from a premature death.

This is the logic behind the nerf of several staple Hearthstone cards. Blizzard’s development team explained that a handful of basic cards were being played too much, crowding out the use of newer expansion cards. Because daddy’s got to make sales, after all.

“Cards in the basic set serve several purposes in the game, so we would rather make balance adjustments to them instead of moving them to the Hall of Fame, like we have done for cards in the classic set,” the studio wrote.

Among those who are getting smacked around by an epic nerfhammer are Innervate, Hex, Fiery War Axe, and Murloc Warleader. Each of those either saw an increase in the cost of its mana requirement or had its benefits reduced.

Make My MMO: MMOTCG HEX is coming to PS4 (September 2, 2017)

This week in MMO crowdfunding, HEX announced it is officially coming to PS4 on September 9th under a hybrid HEX: Card Clash moniker, which “marries the PC version you know and love with an all-new and improved PS4tm client” and allows gamers to “play seamlessly with players from both clients, and compete for weekly cash prizes.” Says the studio,

“Ever since our Kickstarter, we knew there was the desire to curl up on the couch with a nice game of HEX. We originally envisioned this as tablet support, but as HEX evolved it became clear that there were still some significant hurdles to making that a reality. From both a coding and a UI perspective, HEX requires some significant magic to faithfully reproduce the PC experience you know and love in a different medium. While we are absolutely still planning to come to tablet, we began to wonder if we couldn’t get you couch conquerors HEX just a little bit sooner.”

Meanwhile, Shroud of the Avatar launched R45, Crowfall players put together a crafting calculator, Valiance Online streamed its alpha, Grim Dawn released gameplay of its upcoming Necro class, Ashes of Creation pegged December for its “alpha zero,” and Camelot Unchained said it’s overdelivering on tech. (Thanks, Zophie!) Read on for more on what’s up with MMO crowdfunding over the last couple of weeks and the regular roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following.

Make My MMO: Crowfall’s crafting, RUiN’s Kickstarter, Ashes of Creation’s gameplay (March 4, 2017)

This week in MMO crowdfunding, we sent MOP’s Matt Daniel into Crowfall, from which he emerged with many opinions on the state of the game’s high-profile crafting and gathering systems. Economy folks should give it a read!

There are two MMO-related Kickstarters ending this week you may be interested in. Arena brawler RUiN is about 200 bucks from funding as I type this, so it’s going to happen for sure. Caribbean Conquest’s second go at Kickstarter, however, is likely to fall short; it’s secured only about $2000 in pledges of its $30,000-ish goal with only a few days left.

What else is new? Worlds Adrift got a new website (thanks, Daras!), Project Gorgon rolled out a new patch, Albion Online released videos on its sound and music, Elite Dangerous began testing part of the Commanders patch, Camelot Unchained teased beta 1, and Ashes of Creation demoed its gameplay.

Finally, get thee over to Steam, where a trial of Shroud of the Avatar can currently be had entirely for free.

Make My MMO: The Exiled arrives to mixed reviews on Steam (February 25, 2017)

This week in MMO crowdfunding, The Exiled was released to the wilds of Steam early access. Formerly called Das Tal, the buy-to-play indie sandbox attempted to raise funds through Kickstarter back in 2015 but pulled in only €33,000 of its €50,000 goal and resorted to website preorders instead, forging ahead to now. Reviews on Steam so far are mixed; once you subtract the confused trial players who seem surprised to see PvP in a PvP sandbox, the main complaints revolve around crafting grind and lag.

Meanwhile, Ship of Heroes teased its Kickstarter, Shroud of the Avatar released R39, Albion Online settled on a July release, Life is Feudal rolled out its second beta, Pantheon brought on more new employees (thanks, Reht!), Dual Universe planned a GDC community meetup, Star Citizen explored the Magnus system and released a new concept ship, HEX got a new publisher, and Elite: Dangerous did science and turned… beige.

Closer to home, games critic and veritable prince of Patreon Jim Sterling scored a victory for games journalism in the courts as a judge dismissed with prejudice a game developer’s libel lawsuit against him. (Thanks to everyone who tipped this our way!)
