Time to update your space spreadsheet because EVE Online
is coming at you with a brand-new expansion today. Lifeblood has launched
, bringing with it new upwell refineries, massive moon mining, co-op resource war sessions, pirate bases encroaching on empire space, the ability to wager on duels, a new design for CONCORD battleships, and the mining ledger for individuals and corporations.
And while EVE Online’s new and improved Agency user interface might not look like a revolution, it could prove to be an invaluable resource to the bewildered pilot who is lost in the game and is looking for some solid PvE content. The UI hooks up players with all sorts of PvE activities that can be filtered by time, location, and type.

Mining might not be the most visually impressive or glorious activity in EVE Online
, but it helps to form the backbone of the game’s economy and remains a popular way for players to earn their fortune. Now with this month’s Lifeblood
expansion, they’ll have the tools to mine like pros.
This is thanks in part to the new mining ledger: “The personal mining ledger tracks all of the mining activity done by a character, anywhere in New Eden. It allows pilots to see the types of ores, gas and ice they’ve collected, the areas of space they frequent, and of course their activity over time. As a pilot mines, the mining information is collected and batched into days in order to create a personal mining history.”
Corporations get their own ledger, although it is primarily focused on mining activity around refineries. CCP said that it is simply giving players this information in an unformatted state to see what they want to do with it.
You’ve probably heard by now that EVE Online
is giving its free-to-play alpha clone characters a massive boost in power in December about a month after the launch of the Lifeblood
expansion. The news has been spreading through the gaming media
since it was announced last week at EVE Vegas 2017
and the reception online has been generally positive. Some existing players are worried that the change might even be too
generous, with fears that veteran players may let their subscriptions lapse and play for free, or that the new skills might be abused to create an endless army of ganking alts.
There’s no doubt that the changes will help to close the power gap between subscribers and free players and will open up new avenues of gameplay. Free players will finally be able to fly tech 1 battlecruisers and even battleships, and cross-training for multiple races will unlock multi-faction ships such as the Sisters of EVE exploration ships. Alpha clone players will also finally be able to use tech 2 weapons and fly many of the ship setups flown in massive nullsec wars, though the way that the new skill limit is being implemented may actually benefit old and returning players more than new ones.
In this edition of EVE Evolved, I dig into the free-to-play changes, briefly examine the power gap between free and subscribed players, and look at who will benefit most from the change.
One of the things that players will notice when EVE Online: Lifeblood
arrives this October is a whole slew of balance changes for frigates, destroyers, and cruisers. This is because the team responsible for such tweaks feel that it is time to accelerate such efforts while still being as careful as possible not to throw the game out of whack.
“The Council of Stellar Management (CSM) has been advocating heavily for more rapid and consistent balance changes, and we agree that it’s a good time to put more focus on this area,” CCP said. “We are also allocating more time to experiment with totally new mechanics and concepts for ships and modules.”
The ships to receive an array of buffs, nerfs, and changes include the Rifter, the Dragoon, the Corax (no relation to the Lorax), the Arbitrator, the Bellicose, the Omen, the Stabber, the Tristan, and the Vexor. Past these, the balance team has its sights set on Tech I and Tech II tiers of ships like battlecruisers and assault frigates.

, and it’s landing a lot earlier than expected. Though it appears that Lifeblood
is the winter expansion CCP Games has been talking about since EVE Fanfest 2017
, it’s actually launching next month on October 24th. It includes the new Upwell Refinery structures, a total overhaul of moon-mining and advanced material reactions, a full balance pass for the ships used by free-to-play alpha clone characters, and some all-new PvE gameplay in high-security space.
We talked to EVE‘s Executive Producer Andie “CCP Seagull” Nordgren about the plans for new highsec gameplay back in April, and it sounded pretty damn exciting. CCP plans to use the new advanced AI that powers the roaming NPC mining operations to create an ever-evolving landscape of AI-driven conflict that players can affect. The first steps in that plan are arriving with Lifeblood in the form of Pirate Forward Operating Bases and Resource Wars, which ask players to help local factions fight back against the encroachment of pirates. This should make life a hell of a lot more interesting for players in high-security space, while the new moon mining gameplay is expected to set nullsec on fire.
