Lineage 2: Revolution recruits Conan O’Brien for western domination

What is the mobile game that everyone will be talking about this holiday season? Netmarble is confident that the answer to that is “Lineage 2 Revolution.”

The newly launched mobile MMO has some decent momentum at its back, considering that it is Netmarble’s top-grossing game in Korea right now and racked up 1.5 million pre-registrations. The studio is not shy in anticipating that Lineage 2 Revolution will blow up huge in the west as well, taking the top spot on mobile gaming charts.

“I’m taking every measure to make sure that Netmarble US would be successful here. I know for sure that we can reach the top of the charts with a mobile MMORPG,” said Netmarble CEO Shim Chul-Min in an interview. “To make sure that Lineage 2: Revolution becomes the number one mobile game in NA, we’ll do our absolute best.”

Blade & Soul grants character boosts, Blade & Soul Revolution struts its stuff on mobile

With only a few weeks left before Blade & Soul drops its “biggest patch ever,” NCsoft is gifting players a bundle of goodies to prime the crowd for Dawn of the Lost Continent.

Anyone who logs onto an account that has at least one level 10 character will receive a free Lost Continent Explorer’s Pack. This bundle contains a voucher for an instant level 50 character, gear, cosmetics, consumables, keys, and currency. While you can claim the pack now, you won’t get the benefits until the update drops on December 6th.

Shifting gears to Blade & Soul Revolution, we can report that this mobile spin-off is attempting to impress the gaming public at G-Star this week. Steparu noted that it played much the same as the recently launched Lineage 2 Revolution (which makes sense, as both were developed by Netmarble), complete with auto-running and auto-questing. Take a look at Revolution’s trailer and gameplay footage after the break!

Netmarble mobile MMO Lineage 2 Revolution has officially launched

As the Google Play app on my phone frantically notified me this morning, Lineage 2 Revolution has officially launched itself right on out of open beta and into the wilds of western app stores in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania. In fact, 1.5M players apparently signed up for those same frantic notifications. We’re frantic notification twinsies!

Lineage 2: Revolution is a free-to-play mobile MMORPG based on the popular PC online game IP Lineage 2, which has entertained more than 30 million players since it first debuted. Lineage 2: Revolution stays true to its PC roots, displaying a stunning open field, raids, 200-player castle sieges, character re-designs and classes, all in a mobile environment. A fully-featured MMORPG provides seamless open-world environments, real-time 3vs3, 5vs5, 20vs20 and 50vs50 PvP battles, as well as lifelike fantasy world with dazzling graphics backed by the Unreal 4 engine.”

Netmarble is rather hoping the game does as well globally as it already did in Asia, where the title became “the top grossing game on Google Play and App Store in 11 additional Asian territories”; in Japan, it apparently “became the top grossing game on the App Store in just 18 hours.” It’s a high bar, peeps. Get to downloading!

NCsoft’s 3Q 2017 financials: Lineage M drives record profits, Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire isn’t too shabby either

NCsoft had an exceptionally good third financial quarter this year, reaching a record high in sales and operating profit for the company, and it’s almost entirely thanks to the mobile MMORPG Lineage M, which didn’t even bleed the rest of the Lineage franchise as you might have expected (Lineage and Lineage II held remarkably steady this quarter compared to last, as did Aion and Blade & Soul).

Good news for Guild Wars 2 as well; NCsoft notes that ArenaNet’s flagship brought in over $20B Won, “an increase of 49% [quarter-over-quarter], driven by the second expansion pack sales” that saw US and European sales figures in particular increase 13% QOQ “on the back of Guild Wars 2 performance.” $20B Korean Won is about $18M US. So Path of Fire at least performed well enough for NCsoft to gloat about it, twice, and it’s a big boost to GW2, especially considering Q2 2017 was the game’s worst ever – but it didn’t top Heart of Thorns’ huge showing two years ago.

Before you ask, no, we don’t know how well WildStar is doing; NCsoft doesn’t report it separately anymore. But it’s still flying. That’s enough.

Lineage 2 Revolution drops launch trailer ahead of Nov 15 release

Netmarble is going all-out on Lineage 2 Revolution promotion with the mobile MMORPG’s launch slated for Wednesday, November 15th. “Lineage 2: Revolution will deliver the largest-scale multiplayer gameplay ever created for mobile when it launches on Wednesday, featuring seamless open-world environments, real-time 3vs3, 5vs5, 20vs20 and 50vs50 PvP battles, as well as lifelike fantasy world with dazzling graphics backed by the Unreal 4 engine,” says the studio, and if you don’t believe it, you could instead believe Conan O’Brien, who was conscripted for a brief commercial advertising the pre-registration.

We’ve got that, plus the launch trailer, tucked down below! Anybody stalking this one on your platform of choice?

WildStar, Blade and Soul, Aion, and Lineage II come under DDoS attacks

Hackers launched an offensive against NCsoft yesterday, targeting several of the company’s MMORPGs in a series of DDoS attacks. WildStar, Aion, Lineage II, and Blade and Soul all posted warnings about the issues to let players know that game stability might be affected.

Several NCsoft Twitter accounts reported the DDoS onslaught yesterday afternoon, saying, “We’re aware of ongoing distributed denial of service attacks directed at our games and are working to mitigate them. If you’ve been experiencing connection drops or sporadic high latency, please know that we’re closely watching the situation and reducing game service impact as much as possible. If you’re experiencing connection or latency issues which you believe to be outside of these attacks, we ask that you please submit a support ticket so we can collect additional information.”

As of this morning, there were no further updates on the forums or Twitter feeds regarding this attack. Additionally, it does not seem that Guild Wars 2 was affected by the attack.

The Game Archaeologist: Disney’s Toontown Online

The use of the word “toon” to describe MMORPG characters is a contentious one, with fans divided over its annoyance or acceptance. But when it came to one MMORPG, it was nothing but proper terminology to call all characters just this.

Toontown Online was one of those “kiddie MMOs” that you probably ignored unless you happen to fall within its demographical clutches back in the day. While it lasted for about a decade, the game’s operation would be notable for its repeated transformation and uncertain status.

With a silly, cartoon-like look and theme, this MMO attempted to bring a levity to a genre that was often marinating in deep fantasy lore and statistical theorycrafting. But when you wanted to eschew dragon fighting for slapstick pie throwing, there was no better game out there. Let’s take a look!

PSA: Get some bonus goodies when you preregister for Lineage 2: Revolution

Tested and proven over in South Korea, Netmarble’s Lineage 2: Revolution is about to sweep over the globe and enslave your children and your children’s children. Or at least to entertain a bit while mommy and daddy are at the bank.

Hacker claims to have made a living cheating in MMOs for two decades

Motherboard has a fun-slash-depressing piece out this week on an unnamed hacker who claims he’s been cheating at MMORPGs to make a living for almost two decades.

Prior to his recent Def Con hacking conference talk, the hacker dubbed “Manfred” seemingly demoed via video a hack performed in WildStar, one he used to help him accrue nearly 400 trillion gold, which he then allegedly sold to players through various black markets. He argues he wasn’t hacking — he was providing a service by “finding unintended features in the protocol.”

At least some of his claims don’t even seem particularly outlandish, especially if you’ve been around in MMORPGs for a long time and have an understanding of how rampant duping and RMT markets have been over the last 20 years. Manfred claims he got his start in Ultima Online illegally deleting other players’ houses and selling his own on Ebay, funding his days in college. Since then, Motherboard says, he cheated and duped his way through the “wild west” of Lineage 2, Shadowbane, Final Fantasy XI, Dark Age of Camelot, Lord of The Rings Online, RIFT, Age of Conan, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Guild Wars 2.

ChinaJoy 2017: ARK Park, Black Desert, and L2 Revolution

Goodies from this week’s ChinaJoy are already trickling back to us. Notably, Snail Games has posted a new trailer and screenshots for ARK Park, its VR-based ARK: Survival Evolved spinoff.

“The new trailer revealed a first look of the tower defense combat system in ARK Park,” Snail relates. “After players collect enough resources, unlock engrams and forge their weapons, they can head out to defend the attacks of raging dinosaurs. Players enter the world, first arriving at the Space Station, where they will customize their avatar and choose between single and multi-player experiences. They’ll participate in a multiplayer tour, so they can share the visceral gameplay and the thrill of witnessing dinosaurs up-close and personal.”

The PR reiterates that the game is still coming by the end of the year on the Vive, Rift, and PSVR.

70% of Lineage M’s launch players were over 30 years old

The Lineage franchise continues its unstoppable runaway train force in South Korea — this time with Lineage M.

Korea’s Pulse News reports that Lineage M now counts over 10 million players in its first month. The game launched overseas just a month ago with 5.5 million preorders; as of two weeks ago, it had already earned $89 million in revenue, what Pulse calls the “rapidest gain in the Korean game industry.”

Intriguingly, Pulse quotes a WiseApp stat that 70% of Lineage M’s launch-day users were over 30 years old, compared to 29% under 30. Is it a shift in the MMO market, a shift in the mobile market, or a marker for Lineage’s overall base?

SuperData’s June report doesn’t include Lineage M, but the Netmarble-backed Lineage 2 Revolution made the top 10 for mobile revenue in May and indeed set monthly revenue records in Korea — which Lineage M aims to break.

Expect NCsoft’s next quarterly report next month.

RIFT brings on a new community manager

ArcheAge isn’t the only game at Trion Worlds that’s shuffling around its community team these days. RIFT announced last Friday that it brought on board Jennifer “Yaviey” Bridges to be the new community manager for the fantasy MMO.

Bridges said she has worked on several MMO community teams to date including EverQuest II, WildStar, and Lineage II and was a RIFT player back in the early days of the title.

“If you couldn’t already guess, MMORPGs are my jam,” Bridges wrote. “They’re my absolute favorite type of game for a variety of reasons. I love the communities in them, I love that you can constantly strive to be better at something, and questing in general always feels so epic.”

This move doesn’t mean that Linda “Brasse” Carlson is out as a RIFT community manager. Bridges confirmed that Carlson will continue to manage the team while doing “cool creative stuff” in the meantime.
