Last weekend, Brendan wrote a great column on how to stay safe from gankers in EVE Online, noting that the newbies are commonly given what he considers bad advice to just stay in high-sec; indeed, he smartly quoted Shedd: “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”
The article prompted a discussion in our work chat about risk-taking in MMORPGs. “After every one of Brendan’s (excellent!) tips, I keep mentally adding, ‘or alternatively, don’t play EVE,'” Eliot joked. And they’re both right. If you’re dead-set on being a “ship” in the risky gameworld of New Eden, staying in “harbor” defeats the purpose of playing EVE. But this is a real world where you don’t have to be a ship – you don’t have to play EVE. You don’t have to risk it all just for some pixel gratification.

That’s according to Superdata, whose most recent revenue report shows Bungie’s new baby holding the #4 spot for PC and #3 spot for console in terms of global revenue for the month of October. “High attach rates for deluxe editions drove the average selling price up,” says the analysis firm, while digital games’ growth across the board “was underpinned by a 28% jump in premium PC thanks to Destiny 2’s successful BattleNet launch, and the continued blockbuster hit of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.”
Indeed, PUBG blew past D2 on PC to claim the #2 spot, right behind League of Legends. The real competitor for PUBG, however, is Epic’s Fortnite, which startled the PvE playerbase it had cultivated with a quality battle royale mode earlier this fall.
“While Fortnite has seen a higher out-of-the-gate active user base thanks to its F2P status, the game’s long-term success vs. its major and earlier-released rival is uncertain,” writes SuperData.”

One thing you can say for the MMO industry: It never ceases to surprise all of us. No matter what predictions we may make at the beginning of a year, by December we will all be proven fools who lack vision and foresight.
Although 2017 isn’t quite over yet, we here at Massively Overpowered wanted to count down the biggest news stories that crossed over into our neck of the woods so far this year. We witnessed controversies and delights, shockers and sadness. We saw launches and shutdowns, expansions and bugs.
So before we move into 2018, let’s take a look at the year that was and remember the biggest stories that dominated headlines.
What is the mobile game that everyone will be talking about this holiday season? Netmarble is confident that the answer to that is “Lineage 2 Revolution.”
The newly launched mobile MMO has some decent momentum at its back, considering that it is Netmarble’s top-grossing game in Korea right now and racked up 1.5 million pre-registrations. The studio is not shy in anticipating that Lineage 2 Revolution will blow up huge in the west as well, taking the top spot on mobile gaming charts.
“I’m taking every measure to make sure that Netmarble US would be successful here. I know for sure that we can reach the top of the charts with a mobile MMORPG,” said Netmarble CEO Shim Chul-Min in an interview. “To make sure that Lineage 2: Revolution becomes the number one mobile game in NA, we’ll do our absolute best.”
With only a few weeks left before Blade & Soul
drops its “biggest patch ever
,” NCsoft is gifting players a bundle of goodies to prime the crowd for Dawn of the Lost Continent.
Anyone who logs onto an account that has at least one level 10 character will receive a free Lost Continent Explorer’s Pack. This bundle contains a voucher for an instant level 50 character, gear, cosmetics, consumables, keys, and currency. While you can claim the pack now, you won’t get the benefits until the update drops on December 6th.
Shifting gears to Blade & Soul Revolution, we can report that this mobile spin-off is attempting to impress the gaming public at G-Star this week. Steparu noted that it played much the same as the recently launched Lineage 2 Revolution (which makes sense, as both were developed by Netmarble), complete with auto-running and auto-questing. As the Google Play app on my phone frantically notified me this morning, Lineage 2 Revolution has officially launched itself right on out of open beta and into the wilds of western app stores in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania. In fact, 1.5M players apparently signed up for those same frantic notifications. We’re frantic notification twinsies!
“Lineage 2: Revolution is a free-to-play mobile MMORPG based on the popular PC online game IP Lineage 2, which has entertained more than 30 million players since it first debuted. Lineage 2: Revolution stays true to its PC roots, displaying a stunning open field, raids, 200-player castle sieges, character re-designs and classes, all in a mobile environment. Netmarble is rather hoping the game does as well globally as it already did in Asia, where the title became “the top grossing game on Google Play and App Store in 11 additional Asian territories”; in Japan, it apparently “became the top grossing game on the App Store in just 18 hours.” It’s a high bar, peeps. Get to downloading!
So… it looks like NCsoft is really sticking with the “Project TL” name, huh? The game developer replaced the old Lineage Eternal site with a new Project TL teaser page, further cementing the name and game direction change into its public vision.
Last week, NCsoft announced that Lineage Eternal was going back to the drawing board to receive a new Unreal 4 engine, add more MMO mechanics, and change its name in the process (TL stands for “The Lineage,” which just stumbles off the tongue).
Lineage Eternal has been in the works for years now, but it seems that NCsoft is playing it as safe as possible with the third main installment of its flagship MMORPG franchise. Steparu reports that current and previous Lineage Eternal testers will receive some sort of compensation from NCsoft for the delay and change-up.
NCsoft had an exceptionally good third financial quarter this year, reaching a record high in sales and operating profit for the company, and it’s almost entirely thanks to the mobile MMORPG Lineage M, which didn’t even bleed the rest of the Lineage franchise as you might have expected (Lineage and Lineage II held remarkably steady this quarter compared to last, as did Aion and Blade & Soul).
Good news for Guild Wars 2 as well; NCsoft notes that ArenaNet’s flagship brought in over $20B Won, “an increase of 49% [quarter-over-quarter], driven by the second expansion pack sales” that saw US and European sales figures in particular increase 13% QOQ “on the back of Guild Wars 2 performance.” $20B Korean Won is about $18M US. So Path of Fire at least performed well enough for NCsoft to gloat about it, twice, and it’s a big boost to GW2, especially considering Q2 2017 was the game’s worst ever – but it didn’t top Heart of Thorns’ huge showing two years ago.
Before you ask, no, we don’t know how well WildStar is doing; NCsoft doesn’t report it separately anymore. But it’s still flying. That’s enough.
Netmarble is going all-out on Lineage 2 Revolution promotion with the mobile MMORPG’s launch slated for Wednesday, November 15th. “Lineage 2: Revolution will deliver the largest-scale multiplayer gameplay ever created for mobile when it launches on Wednesday, featuring seamless open-world environments, real-time 3vs3, 5vs5, 20vs20 and 50vs50 PvP battles, as well as lifelike fantasy world with dazzling graphics backed by the Unreal 4 engine,” says the studio, and if you don’t believe it, you could instead believe Conan O’Brien, who was conscripted for a brief commercial advertising the pre-registration.

If Lineage Revolution didn’t get you fired up for mobile MMORPGs, maybe Blade & Soul Revolution has a better chance. Netmarble, again licensing one of NCsoft’s popular MMORPG IPs, announced ahead of G-Star that it will publish the new game for mobile devices. There’s a “coming later” link for a “world app” on the official site, so we feel safe suggesting it’s launching globally.
NCsoft tipped its hand on its upcoming Project TL/Lineage Eternal do-over, Blade & Soul 2, and Aion Tempest, but it’s far from the only East Asian company pumping out new games.
As Steparu chronicles, Bluehole is indeed still working on Project W. We don’t know a whole lot, but there are a few snippets in the company’s G-Star trailer showing this MMORPG’s decidedly steampunk aesthetic.
ChangYou, which I still can’t forgive for killing off Zentia in the west, has a codenamed MMO of its own on the way: Project Z Online. According to Steparu, it’s a classic tab-target PC MMORPG that eschews gender-locked characters.
Finally, there’s God Slayer Online, also from ChangYou, which we’ve covered before during its looooooong beta testing and in its current iteration is much more focused on combat and customization.

Hackers launched an offensive against NCsoft yesterday, targeting several of the company’s MMORPGs in a series of DDoS attacks. WildStar, Aion, Lineage II, and Blade and Soul all posted warnings about the issues to let players know that game stability might be affected.
Several NCsoft Twitter accounts reported the DDoS onslaught yesterday afternoon, saying, “We’re aware of ongoing distributed denial of service attacks directed at our games and are working to mitigate them. If you’ve been experiencing connection drops or sporadic high latency, please know that we’re closely watching the situation and reducing game service impact as much as possible. If you’re experiencing connection or latency issues which you believe to be outside of these attacks, we ask that you please submit a support ticket so we can collect additional information.”
As of this morning, there were no further updates on the forums or Twitter feeds regarding this attack. Additionally, it does not seem that Guild Wars 2 was affected by the attack.
