Jukebox Heroes: Massively OP’s guide to grabbing 120+ MMO soundtracks

One of the most common questions that I’m asked from my adoring throngs on the street is, “Justin, where oh where can I get some of these marvelous MMO soundtracks that you talk about all of the time?” OK, that just never happens (on the street, that is), but people are often curious how they can go about starting to amass an MMO soundtrack collection or where to find their favorite album.

The sad truth is that so much music from these games is never officially released in any capacity, which is why I scour YouTube for fan rips of the music files. However, every so often I do discover a studio release somewhere, and I try to keep an up-to-date log on these to help others in their quest for video game scores.

So in the spirit of Christmas and sharing, today I’m going to show you how you can get your ears on more than 120 soundtracks and scores from MMOs, MOBAs, and other online titles — some of which are free and legal for the taking. You’re welcome; don’t mention it!

Massively OP’s guide to MMO Halloween 2016

“Two things I did on Hallows Night: / Made my house April-clear / Left open wide my door / to the ghosts of the year.”  ~ “All Hollows Night” by Lizette Woodworth Reese

Is your door open to the ghosts and ghouls of MMORPGs this season? They are definitely shambling up your walkway, looking to tell you of the grim delights of the holiday in your favorite online games. Indeed, Halloween season is upon us, which means that MMOs have an excuse to break out their favorite yearly festivities.

With so much to look at and do, you might be in a terrible fright trying to figure out what to do first. We consulted our Massively OP gravedigger Bram (he’s on retainer), who offers surprisingly good advice for sorting out the Halloween season in MMOs and getting the most out of the holiday. We recorded his words in this guide, although beware to the soul that reads them all — Bram might be seeing you before the week is up. MUAHAHAHA.

Massively Overthinking: Prestige systems in MMORPGs

Last week, an interesting question dropped into our team inbox. It was from a game developer — I don’t know for which game — named Matthew.

“As a developer, I’d be really interested to know what MMO gamers think about the idea of a ‘prestige system’ in an MMO, akin to Call of Duty’s, to encourage players who reach the endgame content to play through the game again from level 1 (with a different approach). Especially in the context of a game that has enough choices and options to make replaying the game interesting. My small studio doesn’t have the resource to produce an expansive endgame, and this seems like it could be a viable option.”

There are a handful of MMORPGs that try this already — Mabinogi is coming to mind — but it’s very rare in the RPG genre in general, and I bet you guys can think up a few reasons why. So let’s tackle the question for this week’s Overthinking: Which games have prestige systems that encourage you to replay your character from level 1, why do you think it’s so rare in MMORPGs, and how would you like to see such a system play out in a genre that prides itself on character development and permanence?

Getting perspective on Chronicles of Elyria’s planned PvP and PvE featureset

Anyone on the MassivelyOP team will probably tell you that I won’t shut up about Chronicles of Elyria. There’s so much to like about the game Soulbound Studios wants to build! Like many of you, I backed the game, and I’ve been literally battling to keep myself from donating $500 max to the Kickstarter; so far, I’ve backed at only the $40 tier, and I’ve never gone over $35 for any Kickstarter in the past. I don’t easily part with my money, especially for a game in development. While Elyria has a lot going for it, I’ve noticed recently that the developers and some fans might have gotten a little over excited since hitting their funding goal, and I’ve seen people comment about pulling out their funds because of this. The team recently released some answers to some good questions on Reddit, but some answers still feel a bit too optimistic. Maybe it’s time we bring things back down to Earth.

Mabinogi launches first major story update since 2014

Mabinogi is surely one of the most elaborate MMORPG sandboxes that you’re likely to have never played, and it almost slipped under our radar — but not quite! Last week, Nexon released a major update for the twee South Korean import, which according to the studio is its first major story-based update since December 2014.

The Gate of Sanctuary continues Mabinogi’s tale from Generation 19: The Divine Knights as the Alban Knights attempt to quell the rise of new undead monstrosities throughout Erinn. Diehard fans of the PC title can rejoice and dive back into the world of Erinn as they embark on hours of new main story quests and well as new regions to scout. Additionally, the update comes loaded with a host of new features and upgraded systems, such as the introduction of Mabinogi’s new Squire training system – Squires of Baltane – in which players can take on the role of Commanders and mentor new soldiers on their journey to Knighthood. With this new system, commanders can now send Squires on solo missions, to develop their Squire’s abilities, cultivate commander abilities as Squires mature and help individual Squires overcome personal obstacles as they move forward on their path to Knighthood.”

Nexon has pubbed a trailer for the Gate of Sanctuary storyline as well as an overview video for all the content coming in the patch; watch both below.

Perfect Ten: Top 10 obscure MMORPGs

I’ve seen a lot of desperate requests in my day in which players are asking for games outside of the normal sphere of popularity and MMO mainstream (such as it is). We all know what the big games are, the ones that get the lion’s share of the publicity, press, and popularity. But all of that attention can easily blind us to those titles that are quite good if not as well-known, and I believe it’s those MMOs that many players are seeking when looking for an alternative to the games they’ve been playing for years.

So today we’re going to explore a list my top 10 recommendations for “obscure” MMOs. These are games that might not be on the tips of everyone’s tongues but have earned a solid reputation in some way and might offer a different experience than the same-old that you’re used to seeing. For this list I’m mostly sticking with released or playable titles that have good word-of-mouth behind them, are still in operation, and have generally run under the radar for most of their lifespan.

Be a guitar hero with Maplestory 2’s new instruments

MapleStory 2 fans can now rock around the clock thanks to the gifting of new guitars and pianos to players. And there’s no need for lengthy lessons: You can start making some beautiful music using the free random Mabinogi music sheets acquired from an NPC. However, for those who are more musically inclined, players can also create their own music in game. Check out Steparu.com’s jam session in the video below, then jump in game and grab a guitar and start strumming or pull up a bench and tickle those ivories for yourself!
