Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: MMORPG of the Year

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for MMORPG the Year, which was awarded to Final Fantasy XIV last year.

Recall that in 2014, we couldn’t reach consensus on an MMO of the year. In fact, enough of us voted “nothing” that “nothing” is exactly what won, which was a depressing way to end the year. So last year, we took readers’ advice and opened this category up to all MMOs, provided they did something noteworthy this year. We’ve done the same this year, though as you’ll soon see, we needn’t have.

All of our writers were invited to cast a vote, but not all of them chose to do so for this category. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end, and congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and winners.

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Most Anticipated MMORPG for 2017 and Beyond, which was awarded to Star Citizen last year in an incredibly close vote. This year’s was close too, but dang, a lot of the games are the same because they still aren’t out.

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Best MMORPG Expansion or Update of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Best MMORPG Expansion or Update of 2016, which was awarded to Guild Wars 2’s Heart of Thorns last year. Like last year, 2016 had many to choose from! Every update and expansion to an MMORPG was eligible, as long as it launched in this calendar year.

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: MMORPG Studio of the Year

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Best MMORPG Studio of 2016, which was awarded to Square-Enix last year.

We asked our writers to consider major MMORPG studios in 2016, not just their pet favorites, and judge the studios on what they did within the MMORPG genre this year specifically. All of our writers were invited to cast a vote, but not all of them chose to do so for this category. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Best MMORPG Trend of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Best MMORPG Trend of 2016, which was awarded to the staggering resurgence of MMORPG expansions last year. This year, all trends were back on the table. All of our writers were invited to cast a vote, but not all of them chose to do so for this category. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Best MMORPG Holiday Event of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for the MMORPG with the Best Holiday Event of 2016, which is yet another new award for us this year, and we have readers Agemyth and Mylicia to thank for suggesting it. The award is self-explanatory: It’s meant for the MMORPG with the best holiday-themed event that took place during 2016 specifically, regardless of when the game itself was launched. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!

Jukebox Heroes: The 2016 Online VGM Awards

With all of the award madness going on at Massively OP this month, it’s the perfect time to unveil the 2016 Online VGM Awards! It’s been a great year of soundtracks from our favorite MMOs, and since I have the opportunity to singlehandedly dish out any awards I like in this column, I wanted to give some honor to terrific composers and tunes that we got to listen to this year.

As with last year’s awards, I’ll be fashioning each category and selecting a winner. Some of the categories are 2016-specific, while others have more flexibility to stretch beyond this calendar year. Unlike last year’s awards, this round will have categories that are more universal and can be carried forward in future years.

So who won? We’ve got six categories to go through, including best MMO soundtrack of 2016 and composer of the year, so let’s get started!

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Best Popcorn MMO of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Best Popcorn MMO of 2016, which is a brand-new award on MOP this year and was pitched by reader Agemyth. We’re defining “popcorn game” akin to the way Mark Jacobs describes his upcoming game’s “popcorn crafting” — they’re snacks, quick bites, jump-in-jump-out games that aren’t necessarily intended to be eight-hour escapades (although they can have that too). These are the games we play when we need to fill 15 or 30 minutes, not when we want a traditional MMORPG experience, and we’ve opted to include pre-2016 MMOs and pseudo-MMOs (shooters, MOBAs, OARPGs, etc.) as long as they accomplished something truly popcorn-worthy in this calendar year.

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Biggest MMORPG Disappointment of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for the Biggest MMORPG Disappointment of 2016, which was awarded in 2015 to World of Warcraft’s setbacks: Blizzard’s massive sub slide and content drought. Hey, at least it won’t go two in a row!

Disappointments can be games, launches, patches, trends, stories, sunsets, all manner of topics in the MMORPG genre and orbiting sub-genres. All of our writers were invited to cast a vote, but not all of them chose to do so for this category. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end.

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Best MMORPG PvP of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Best MMORPG PvP Experience in 2016, which is new to our awards series this year as proposed by proposed by strangesands and melissaheather. Once again, we’ve opted to include live, fully released MMORPGs launched in any year, as long as their 2016 PvP experience is what’s being judged (some writers nominated non-MMORPGs and unlaunched games; they were included below, but the votes were not considered). Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Biggest MMORPG Industry Blunder of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Biggest MMORPG Industry Blunder of 2016. Last year, we called the Star Citizen melodrama the biggest blunder of the year, as we criticized the poor behavior of certain players, developers, and press regarding the sci-fi game. This isn’t an award we particularly enjoy giving, but I think it’s a fitting complement to praising trends and big stories: We must consider the mistakes of the year so we don’t make them again.

All of our writers were invited to cast a vote, but not all of them chose to do so for this category. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll

Massively OP’s Best of 2016 Awards: Best MMORPG Player Housing of 2016

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Best MMORPG Player Housing of 2016, which is a new award for MOP and one proposed this year by Agemyth and Mylicia. MMORPGs eligible for this award can have launched in any year as long as they are still alive and still offer player housing; nominees should be judged based on the quality and depth of that feature and that feature alone.
