MechWarrior Online adds the Supernova, works on skill tree revamp

Glomping into MechWarrior Online this week is the brand-new Supernova, a fearsome beast of a machine with two weapon module slots and two consumable slots.

The Supernova is part of the February update, which also adds some cockpit items, renames the invasion game mode to simply "siege," auto-renews mercenary contracts, and makes a slew of faction play and 'mech adjustments and fixes.

Next on deck for the lobby brawler is a revamp to the skill tree. The team has been working on this for some time and is adjusting it based on player feedback from the test realm. "The biggest topic of discussion has undoubtedly been the economy of the skill tree system," the devs wrote. "Much of the feedback we received also centered on the relative balance of the skill tree and the structure and content of certain skill branches and skill nodes."

Mechwarrior Online soft-launches a new game client portal

Mechwarrior Online is laying out a fresh welcome mat for its players in the form of a new client portal. Those 'mechs better wipe their feet before coming into the game!

According to the team, the portal "brings improved stability, smoother patching and install procedures, and support for maintaining both the regular standalone client and the public test client."

The team said that the portal is in a "soft-release state," which should be translated as "it might be somewhat buggy so don't pick on it and don't blame us." Right now, players have the option to keep the old launcher or switch to the new one, but in the future the game will fully switch over to this improved portal. Steam users do not need the portal

The Game Archaeologist: Wing Commander Online and Privateer Online

In late 2012, former Wing Commander developer-slash-movie director Chris Roberts emerged from a decade of obscurity to ask for help to fund his vision of a massive, engaging space sim for a modern audience. Fans opened up their wallets and started pouring unprecedented amounts of money into the project, which Roberts called Star Citizen.

I don't have to explain to you the subsequent rise of this $138M+ budget title, the vast expansion of its scope, the debate over its viability, and the fanatical following that fans have for this "under construction" sim. Even if it can't be Wing Commander in name, gamers reasoned as they plunked down their money, it could be the Wing Commander MMO in spirit.

Interestingly enough, there was another, older effort made to bring the well-known franchise to the MMO table back in the late '90s. A pair of projects, Wing Commander Online and Privateer Online, promised the thrills of the hit space saga with the expanse of the online gaming world. What happened and why aren't we playing one of these games today? Find out on this exciting episode of The Game Archaeologist!

Mech_Con 2016: MWO skill trees, game modes, and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries

As one might hope for from a convention, Mech_Con 2016 was a time to not only hang out with other fans and meet the devs but get exciting announcements for MechWarrior Online. And Piranha Games didn't disappoint. From the new game modes to the new skill trees, there was definitely new content revealed and showcased. Then there was the surprise announcement of the single-player MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, which brought the audience to its feet.

Beyond the staged announcements, I also had the chance to sit down with Piranha Games President Russ Bullock to talk a bit about the future of MechWarrior Online. Here's a run-down of the news that came from the game's first convention, as well as a peek in pictures of the other 'Mech related activities -- like watching the first world championship play out, play testing Catalyst Games' upcoming BattleTech board game, and hearing more about the Hairbrained Scheme's BattleTech turn-based game in development.

Mech_Con 2016: Piranha Games announces MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries

Just before the final round of the MechWarrior Online 2016 World Championship last night, Piranha Games president Russ Bullock dropped a bombshell, announcing that the studio is also developing MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. And he did this without even saying a word at first, just loading into the game and playing it in front of an extremely excited audience.

Bullock noted that Mercenaries will be the first stand-alone MechWarrior game for the PC since 2002. Unlike the multiplayer MWO, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will be a dedicated singleplayer PvE game with a career-based Mercenary campaign. That would certainly scratch some of the itch any MWO players have for playing verses AI. The game is being built on the Unreal engine and has a planned to release of 2018. Bullock assures that there won't be any slowdown on the development of MWO due to the new project.

If you weren't at MechCon live and also missed the announcement on Twitch, you can still watch some alpha gameplay footage right here. Then keep an eye on mw5mercs.com as the game develops.

The Stream Team: Thankful for long-range missiles in MechWarrior Online

You can find something to be thankful for anywhere, and Massively OP's MJ is thankful for long-range missiles in MechWarrior Online. She'd rather stay out of close firefights, preferring instead to hanging back and lobbing death on her enemies from afar. (She's also less likely to shoot her teammates that way!) MJ is also thankful for friends to team up with, and she's glad to have Artix join in for some pre-holiday matches. What better way to prepare for the big holiday than by strapping into a giant mechanical suit and blasting away at moving targets? It's like a warm up to Black Friday shopping! Tune in live at 9:00 p.m. to watch the carnage.

One Shots: A home away from home

If you were to move into an MMO for real, where would you live? I posed this question last week to the One Shots community, and those faithful screenshotting madmen and madwomen did not let me down with their responses.

DigitalQ says that Lord of the Rings Online leaves all other prospective homesteads in the dust: "I think this is a lovely spot to live out my RPG days. But I have to be honest: This is almost an identical screenshot of where I live now. A huge flock of geese are landing on the water as I'm typing this..and we actually call our home The Shire. It is a little slice of heaven on earth."

The Stream Team: Too many Mechs in MechWarrior Online!

MassivelyOP's MJ has been suffering from 'Mech withdrawals. The only cure: Some MechWarrior Online! She's suiting up to dive back into battle, but she can't quite decide which 'Mech to use. There are just so many choices -- almost too many. And there are definite benefits to each one. Should she go for mobility and use the light Arctic Cheetah or Commando, focus on lobbing death from afar in her Hunchback, or go heavy in an Archer? Tune in live at 9:00 p.m. and help MJ pick her method of mass destruction as she aims to make mincemeat of her enemies.
