2006 MMOTBS Pox Nora lands on PlayStation 4 this month with solid cross-platform support

Long before Hearthstone, HEX, and the avalanche of other games trying to cash in on the legitimized online lottery that is TCGs, there was the bizarre and wonderful hybrid Pox Nora. In fact, you MMORPG vets will likely remember the game from when it was published by SOE, though now the 2006 online tactical turn-based strategy game (“with collectible card and fantasy MMORPG elements”) flies under the flag of Desert Owl Games, which was founded by two of the game’s original creators. And Desert Owl has built on the game since the sale, most notably with last year’s expansion.

This year, however, Pox Nora will expand to console. The studio announced this week that its PS4 debut is set for May 23rd with proper cross-platform play and PC-to-PS4 account copying.

“To celebrate the console debut, Desert Owl Games will simultaneously deliver exclusive content to the PlayStation community that can be used against PC players via cross-play. PlayStation players will have access to all of Pox Nora’s currently-released PC expansions. Upon launching the game the first time, players will be awarded the ‘Ironfist Inquisition’ deck. They will also receive a bonus login pack for playing on PlayStation 4 and an additional pack if they have a PlayStation Plus account. An exclusive pack of eight character skins and special bundles packed with exclusive content is also available. Additionally, PC gamers will have the option to copy their existing PC account’s inventory to the PlayStation 4.”

Space Wars takes turn-based strategy into early access this December

On the podcast this week, one listener asked us if we could recommend — or even think of — any modern turn-based MMOs. Naturally, one came across our radar just too late for the broadcast, but at least we can share it with you here.

Space Wars touts itself as being “a turn-based tactical strategy MMO, where real-time travel meets turn-based combat.” In the game, players will join up with one of four factions and fight to take over the galaxy planet by planet. Combat shows 3-D ship models battling it out in successive rounds, as captains make essential decisions each turn and allocate points in RPG trees.

The game is being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux platforms and will be playable at PAX West before coming to early access this December. It’s being made by Desert Owl Games, a studio founded by two former Pox Nora leads and composed of mostly female devs. You can check out both its story and gameplay trailers after the jump!

MMOTBS Pox Nora launches Spirits Beyond, its 28th expansion

Born in 2006, online tactical turn-based strategy game (wheeee) Pox Nora is today releasing its 28th expansion, called Spirits Beyond.

“Spirits Beyond adds 51 all new Runes, along with over 20 new abilities and mechanics to the game. The ongoing story arc of Pox Nora sheds light upon the mysterious ruins of a once forgotten city and its history. These revelations along with the incursion of the spirit elemental, known as the Arroyo, makes this one of the most surprising and epic times in the lands of Poxanthuru. The big new addition in Spirits Beyond is the long awaited Hand of Death campaign. This challenging 5 mission story arc follows a band of Protectorate heros as they discover and ultimately face one of Pox Nora’s most powerful antagonists. This campaign reveals some of the larger events that have occurred in Pox Nora over the past expansions. The Hand of Death campaign is available for both paid and free-to-play currencies on the Pox Nora Marketplace. Completing this brand new campaign on Legendary will award the Glimpse of Death limited edition rune! This is the only way for player to acquire this one of a kind rune.”

You might recall Pox Nora from its days under SOE’s banner, but the game is alive and well post-SOE in the hands of Desert Owl Games. The expansion video is below!
