The most popular MMORPG conversations of 2017

Last week, we posted a rundown of the most popular MMORPG articles of 2017, calculated strictly by the number of pageviews they got. Today, we’re going to take a look at the most popular articles of 2017 as measured by comments, which provides an entirely different overview of the year and the genre.

This list is a little wonky as we couldn’t keep a lot of our January comments when we were booted off Livefyre. (Some of the old comments were restored, but others were simply lost because Livefyre wasn’t properly saving them back. Long story.) So technically, we lost a month. Still, I think we have a pretty good picture of what people really truly want to talk about (which isn’t always the same thing you like to click on!).

The Daily Grind: What were your best MMORPG gaming achievements in 2017?

Before we jump into 2018, let’s take a moment to ruminate on our personal accomplishments in MMO gaming this year.

While I didn’t get around to all of the games that I wanted to play or had enough time to enjoy the ones I did, I feel like it was a pretty solid year all around for me. I went through the Bingo Boffin storyline and Mordor in Lord of the Rings Online, got my fourth level 110 in World of Warcraft, and brought my Secret World Legends character all the way through the game (again). I even got reacquainted with an old favorite MMO — Dungeons and Dragons Online — and collected tons of great stories.

What were your best MMORPG gaming achievements in 2017? Looking back, what are you most proud of doing? What made you the happiest? What game worlds did you visit and what did you do in them?

Massively OP’s Best of 2017 Awards: MMORPG of the Year

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2017 awards continue today with our award for MMORPG of the Year, which was awarded to Black Desert last year.

Recall that in 2014, we couldn’t reach consensus on an MMO of the year. In fact, enough of us voted “nothing” that “nothing” is exactly what won. The following year, we took readers’ advice and opened this category up to all live MMOs, regardless of launch year, provided they did something noteworthy this year. We’ve done the same this year. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end, and congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and winners.

The Stream Team: Secret World Legend’s Last Train to Cairo

One of the really neat changes Secret World Legends did was incorporate The Last Train to Cairo DLC from The Secret World into the main story mission of Egypt. It is a major piece of the whole puzzle, and getting that info readily is awesome. While working through the story, Massively OP’s MJ has been punching out the bad guys and getting to that spot where she’ll need to hop that train and thwart the evildoing. Tune in live at 9:00 p.m. to see if she helps the world avert another massive disaster.

MMO Year in Review: Morrowind, Stormblood, and Secret World Legends (June 2017)

We’re taking a time-machine back through our MMO coverage, month by month, to hit the highlights and frame our journey before we head into 2018!

Easily the high point of the year, June saw the launch of The Elder Scrolls Online’s Morrowind and Final Fantasy XIV’s Stormblood, along with the relaunch of The Secret World as Secret World Legends.

Meanwhile, Shroud of the Avatar launched a controversial equity crowdfunding campaign, Cryptic announced a Magic the Gathering MMORPG, and we got a look at Skull & Bones, Sea of Thieves, and Anthem at E3. We also confirmed that Neowiz and Aeria had cut ties, leaving the former to bring Bless Online westward alone.

Read on for the whole list!

The most popular Massively OP MMO articles of 2017

One of my favorite things to do every year is drill down the top articles on the site for our readers. I don’t mean the most controversial, the most fun, the most important, or the most commented-on; I mean the single articles that actually brought in the most hits. And what I find most interesting is that most “popular” aren’t always the ones we expect! As we’ve noted before, a well-timed link from a major website – Reddit, Fark, or a game dev – can elevate an entire month. (That’s why we’re so grateful when our fans share our work across social networks!)

Just remember that the list favors posts made early in the year (and in some cases, evergreen articles from earlier years) as later pieces haven’t had as much time to percolate, so when you do see big articles from December on a list like this, that means a popular post indeed!

The 2017 MOP MMO Christmas album

Do you like to sing carols? That’s one of my favorite things about this time of year! Christmas time is the best time for music to permeate everything. There’s not a moment that goes by that I’m not thinking of or singing a song. Instead of sugarplums dancing in my head, I usually have lyrics. You may have heard a tune or two while watching The Stream Team adventures on OPTV (and you just might hear more again sooner than you think!).

Of course, my songs aren’t always of the traditional sort; they tend to have a twist or three. It’s inevitable that two things I love — gaming and music — are intertwined in interesting and/or strange ways. My first Christmas carol concoctions came back in 2011 in my Solorius medly album. The next year, a second batch was born, and I was pretty much totally hooked. Chaos Theory got in on the action in both 2013 and in 2014. But I play so many more games now that the tunes aren’t contained to any one title. Here is a smattering of holiday music from Warframe, The Secret World, The Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest II, ARK, and Aion that you can sing along to this season. Go ahead, no one’s listening!

The best Massively OP streams of 2017

As captain of our Stream Team, Massively OP’s MJ Guthrie and Larry Everett were joined by Andrew Ross this year to play zillions of games live, some old and some new, providing our community with an interactive look at some of the games in (and around) our genre. I’ve picked out my 10 favorites from the year, from sunsets and interviews to early access MMO sneak-peeks and even a group stream for the launch of one of the year’s biggest MMO expansions. Let’s dig in!

One Shots: Hand over the presents or the reindeer gets it

Well, that escalated fast.

A showdown with a Santa Claus raid boss in The Division led to BalsBigBrother attempting an unorthodox tactic of threatening Donner or Blitzen (we can never tell the difference) with a headshot. A standoff ensued, during which police negotiators came out with hot chocolate and candy canes, and everyone declared it the best-tasting hostage situation ever.

“Gimme all your presents or the reindeer gets lead poisoning,” he shouted to the other side. “Heh just kidding; no reindeers were harmed in the taking of this screenshot.”

Tune in live at 8:00 p.m. and celebrate Winter Solstice with a story speed run through Scorched Desert.

Massively OP’s Winter Holiday 2017 guide!

It’s that time of year again where the airwaves of certain radio stations are clogged with the same songs from the 1950s, television broadcasts are filled with specials about the nature of giving, and dozens of people exclaim that Die Hard is a holiday film due to its timeframe. Yes, it’s the holiday season, and whatever you celebrate, you cannot retreat into your favorite MMO without seeing plenty of red suits, white trim, and all sorts of associated antics.

So, where will you hang your gaming hat this year? Probably in much the same place as usual, but if you’re curious about which games are running which events, we have you covered with our roundup just below.
