Perfect Ten: 20 upcoming MMOs to watch in 2018

It has become a long-standing tradition as Massively OP and our former site that we like to end the year by creating a list of titles that we anticipate for the coming one. It has always been a devilish list to create, full of loose dates and fast guesswork about which titles will and won’t be releasing during a 12-month window (just read last year’s list to see how spot-on I was).

This year we’re changing things up a bit by tossing out the qualifying factor of “will see a hard launch in 2018.” Instead, I drafted up a list of 20 MMOs that have the potential to do or be really interesting next year, whether that be a launch, a long-anticipated beta test, or some other significant development. Plus, hey, you get 20 for the price of 10, so no complaining now!

As an aside, this list isn’t going to cover some other exciting-looking multiplayer games that are arriving in 2018, like AnthemSea of ThievesThe Crew 2Monster Hunter WorldDayZRed Dead Redemption 2Stardew Valley, Conan Exiles, and State of Decay 2. And you old school fans won’t want to forget that Ultima Online has a new free-to-play option coming this spring.

Betawatch: Star Citizen sells land… in space! (December 1, 2017)

Selling spaceships that don’t exist yet? That is so 2016. The new thing for Star Citizen is selling land that doesn’t exist yet, which (as with the aforementioned spaceships) the developers are quickly pointing out is totally optional and won’t result in any advantages. You can make your own giggles about how appropriate it is, although as a crowdfunding approach it does have a storied legacy.

Moving right along, let’s dig into some other beta news, shall we?

Wasn’t that fun? If it was, let us know if there are any errors in the list down below so that we can address them. If it wasn’t… well, still let us know if there are any errors. It’s still helpful. You could also talk about betas that you’re involved with, or just share your thoughts on this week’s beta news. We’re flexible.

Soulworker Online delays open beta to 2018

These cel shaded warriors are going to have to wait a little while longer to romp around in the apocalypse.

Soulworker Online announced last week that it is delaying the North American open beta, which was originally supposed to take place by the end of this year. The new target window? The first quarter of 2018, so it’s not as though we have a long time to wait.

“This commitment to quality and the best player experience also means we have to postpone the open beta to Q1 2018,” the team posted. “We had hoped to finish a number of tasks faster, but in the end we rather invest more time and money to make Soulworker an even better game than rushing it out of the door in a less than perfect state.”

It’s not the end of the world (yet); Steparu shared some gameplay footage that should tide you over until this game becomes available here, as it’s hit beta in Korea already. Check it out below!

This Soulworker Online trailer might make you a true believer

There comes those tipping-point moments in following MMOs where an upcoming game goes from being of passing interest to “OK, now you have my full and undivided attention.” If you’ve only been lightly keeping track of the anime MMO Soulworker Online, this new gameplay trailer might become one of those moments for you.

The fast-and-furious trailer is full of cel shaded poses and kinetic combat, giving players a feel for the post-apocalyptic contemporary world that sets this title apart from many of its peers. And if it does hook you, then good news: You could get to play the beta as early as the end of this year.

SoulWorker is readying for beta in North America at the end of 2017

When you see the title SoulWorker, does your brain immediately re-translate it to “Social Worker” and picture an MMO wherein you spend your time helping low-income people advance in society? Probably not. That’s not what SoulWorker is about, as you will no doubt have the opportunity to find out when the game finally gets localized for a North American release. The official statement is that beta is on track for the end of 2017.

Players will take the helm of one of the game’s four playable characters, each with a distinct weapon – two-handed swords, scythes, guns, or apparently some form of violent guitar. You can then team up with four other people to smash the living heck out of things at your leisure. Check out the actual combat in the video just below, courtesy of Steparu. (The video below is just for Haru and her two-handed sword, but you can likely get a sense of the game just from that.)

Perfect Ten: All the MMORPGs coming in 2017

Right now we are in a strange place in MMORPG history. Following the backlash of WoW clones and several high-profile titles that underperformed, major studios are becoming extremely risk-averse to creating big-budget titles the way that we saw not five years ago. Many former MMO teams are diversifying with shooters, MOBAs, and other safer and trendier titles.

Yet all is not lost! MMO features continue to ripple out into all types of game genres and new titles continue to be produced — just not from the usual suspects. Instead, most of what is on our immediate horizon comes from either crowdfunded indie teams or eastern giants. The good news is that 2017 should see the culmination of many of these long-brewing projects and adaptations, hopefully resulting in a bumper crop of interesting online RPGs for us to play.

So let’s run down the list of games that either are or possibly could be coming to you in 2017. We will provide an overview of each title, why you should care about it, and our best guess at the odds of its officially launching during the calendar year. If an upcoming MMO is not on the list, then it is our opinion that while we’ll see it eventually, a 2017 release isn’t happening.
