SoulWorker is readying for beta in North America at the end of 2017

When you see the title SoulWorker, does your brain immediately re-translate it to “Social Worker” and picture an MMO wherein you spend your time helping low-income people advance in society? Probably not. That’s not what SoulWorker is about, as you will no doubt have the opportunity to find out when the game finally gets localized for a North American release. The official statement is that beta is on track for the end of 2017.

Players will take the helm of one of the game’s four playable characters, each with a distinct weapon – two-handed swords, scythes, guns, or apparently some form of violent guitar. You can then team up with four other people to smash the living heck out of things at your leisure. Check out the actual combat in the video just below, courtesy of Steparu. (The video below is just for Haru and her two-handed sword, but you can likely get a sense of the game just from that.)

Perfect Ten: All the MMORPGs coming in 2017

Right now we are in a strange place in MMORPG history. Following the backlash of WoW clones and several high-profile titles that underperformed, major studios are becoming extremely risk-averse to creating big-budget titles the way that we saw not five years ago. Many former MMO teams are diversifying with shooters, MOBAs, and other safer and trendier titles.

Yet all is not lost! MMO features continue to ripple out into all types of game genres and new titles continue to be produced — just not from the usual suspects. Instead, most of what is on our immediate horizon comes from either crowdfunded indie teams or eastern giants. The good news is that 2017 should see the culmination of many of these long-brewing projects and adaptations, hopefully resulting in a bumper crop of interesting online RPGs for us to play.

So let’s run down the list of games that either are or possibly could be coming to you in 2017. We will provide an overview of each title, why you should care about it, and our best guess at the odds of its officially launching during the calendar year. If an upcoming MMO is not on the list, then it is our opinion that while we’ll see it eventually, a 2017 release isn’t happening.

Gameforge confirms western plans for SoulWorker Online

Last week’s rumors are now locked in and official: SoulWorker Online is definitely coming westward thanks to a cooperative partnership between Gameforge and Korea’s Lion Games.

“Fans of Japanese Animes and action MMORPG lovers alike can look forward to a cinematic gameplay experience in SoulWorker, which makes full use of the HAVOK Vision Engine+. An extraordinary cinema visualisation is created with an exciting background story, detailed cel-shading animations, cutscenes and NPC dialogues set to music, making Anime fans feel at home from the very first moment. Fresh classes such as the ‘Howling Guitar’, which has a magical guitar for surface area attacks and healing effects as a weapon, feel familiar for the genre while escaping popular clichés as players fight against the threats coming from another dimension.”

No release timeframe has been announced.

Soulworker Online starts Japanese open beta next week

On the prowl for a new game to test? We might have something for you in the anime department next week with Soulworker Online.

Soulworker is an action MMO with a downright beautiful look, as long as you’re into both the anime style and cel shading. It takes place in a modern (if not sci-fi) setting, so expect guns along with ridiculously giant swords. The MMO is kicking off its open beta in Japan on March 30th, and while there isn’t an English version yet, players regardless of region can jump into the game to see what it has to offer. The beta will be a short one, with Soulwalker’s transition into live operation following on April 6th.
