Free Splatoon 2 update brings higher rankings, new gear, and lost Squid Sister Callie

As if tier systems weren’t specific enough with letter grades, + and -, S rank, and S+#, Splatoon 2‘s 3.0 update is further separating the kids from the squids with rank X, a tier above the rest aimed primarily at the best of the best.

For the rest of us mere mortals, about 100 new and returning pieces of gear are being added tonight at 9 p.m. EDT, along with some Splatoon 1 songs, four new weapons, the Camp Triggerfish stage, and Callie’s glorious return. The once lost squid sister will offer recent multiplayer stats about the player’s character after “certain requirements” are met.

We’ve also been warned that future releases will be coming out more slowly, but meatier, with batches of weapons, gear, and stages still coming along in the future.

Massively OP’s Best of 2017 Awards: Best Not-So-Massively Game of 2017

Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2017 awards continue today with our award for Best Not-So-Massively Game, which was awarded to Overwatch last year. As you might surmise, the games eligible for this category are online games that generally aren’t considered traditional MMORPGs – they’re MOBAs, online dungeon crawlers, ARPGs, online shooters, survival sandboxes, and other games that tread into MMO territory but aren’t full MMORPGs. Once again, we’ve opted to include pre-2016 titles, as long as they accomplished something truly notable in this calendar year. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!

The Massively OP staff pick for Best Not-So-Massively Game of 2017 is…

First Impressions: Splatoon 2 is a lobby shooter for socializers

After my hands-on at E3 and experience with the first Splatfest demo, I was a little concerned about Splatoon 2. I loved Splatoon 1but something about the E3 Salmon Run fell flat, and after having experienced the full version of Splat 1, I thought that the demo of Splat 2 without customization felt too shallow.

So I was provided a review copy of the game prior to launch, and something still didn’t feel right. While it was good to get in time with the single player mode and prepare me for launch, I figured out what was missing: the real Splatoon community. It’s what gives Splatoon more of an MMO-y feel than most of Nintendo’s other titles.

Massively Overthinking: The best MMOs and multiplayers of E3 2017

E3 is drawing to a close, with its reveals over and done with — all that’s left is processing our interviews and hands-on pieces. But in the meantime, we decided to take this week’s Overthinking to consider the field. MMORPGs haven’t shined brightly at E3 in a long time, so our expectations are usually low — the con is interesting to us more for what’s happening on the multiplayer front.

So that’s what we asked our staff: What’s the most interesting or grabby-hands MMO or MMO-ish thing from E3 this year? Which game would get your best in show and why? There’s also an extra bonus section on the con itself courtesy of our writer on the floor.

E3 2017: Hands-on with Splatoon 2’s Salmon Run

At this year E3’s, a lot of the big companies in gaming let journalists behind the scenes, rather than forcing us to spend hours of expo time in line. In fact, some even slipped us a few nuggets that other press weren’t being given (or due to their lack of knowledge of our genre, didn’t understand). Small nuggets, but things that excited me as a fan. It’s not a true MMO, but Nintendo gave us some interesting news about Splatoon 2’s Salmon Run mode, a new feature in the 4v4 multiplayer shooter, and I got my hands on it and a Nintendo Switch to boot.
