Path of Exile thanks everyone for the Fall of Oriath

Fans of Path of Exile are enjoying The Fall of Oriath expansion now. Anecdotal evidence might not be admissible in court, but fans seem happy. And so the next step for the development team is… not to roll around in piles of money, but to thank people. To thank everyone involved with the game, in fact.

Did you work on the game’s customer support or development teams? You deserve thanks. Responsible for back-end server maintenance or external processing services? You also deserve thanks. Heck, even if you’re just a fan eagerly clamoring for the expansion and looking forward to playing it, you deserve thanks. It’s a nice message to see, a hearty “thank you” to everyone who’s made this expansion successful in their own ways. Feel free to check out MJ’s stream below if you’d like to see how it plays before jumping in yourself.

Path of Exile: The Fall of Oriath launches today

It’s the largest single-day release of new content since the game’s launch — and unlike a lot of expansions mentioned lately, it’s all free, free, free. Path of Exile: The Fall of Oriath launches today, bringing the game up to Patch 3.0.0 and vastly expanding the single-player campaign.

The expansion brings up the number of acts to a total of 10, adds a truckload of new skills and items, and introduces the pantheon system to make your character even more god-like.

“Best the ancient gods of Wraeclast in battle and you can claim a portion of their power,” the studio explained. “There are four major god powers and seven minor god powers to be claimed in The Fall of Oriath. You can have one major and one minor power active at a time, and can return to any town or hideout to change which powers are active at no cost.”

As you wait for your computer to download the 7.1 GB update and for the patch counter to tick down to 4 p.m. EDT, you can read up on the patch notes and re-watch the official trailer below!

Path of Exile posts Fall of Oriath patch notes prior to Friday’s launch

Is this expansion week here at Massively OP or what? In just two days, Path of Exile will be rolling out its hotly anticipated Fall of Oriath pack to PC players (Xbox One folks are still waiting to hear about a release date).

While the waiting might be hard, at least there is a wall of patch notes to dig through in preparation of the big event. The tentpole of the expansion is its half-dozen additional acts, the new pantheon system, and the new help panel — but that’s by no means all there is.

“The Fall of Oriath is our largest content expansion ever,” the team said. “In addition to six new acts of content, it includes new skill and support gems, unique items, our new water renderer, improvements to world environments, the minimap, game performance, and much, much more!”

Take a look at Path of Exile’s new Charged Dash skill in action

Charged Dash is a new skill coming to Path of Exile, and when you read about how it works it probably seems a little counter-intuitive. See, when you use it, you don’t actually dash; you project a mirage of yourself forward for as long as you channel the ability. The mirage movement is based on your movement speed, only slightly faster, but you still only actually dash when you stop channeling. Then you deal damage to everything along your path and explode in electricity.

Of course, when you see it in action, it all makes perfect sense, and the designers helpfully point out how the skill can be used as both a movement tool and a damage skill with varying aspects. Check out the video just below to see it in action. It’s a bit like watching a lightning bolt find its destination, which seems appropriate.

Path of Exile moves forward with Fall of Oriath’s beta testing

Things are getting downright serious with Path of Exile’s upcoming expansion. The team recently pumped out the second wave of the Fall of Oriath beta, which featured a wipe and the inclusion of Act 8 into testing. Wave 3 with its performance improvements is planned to arrive next week, followed by Wave 4 a week later.

“We are also hoping to release the 2.6.3 patch to the live servers in the next week, which includes the new microtransaction system,” the team added. “We want to get this deployed as soon as we can so that everyone can start using their microtransactions in the beta and be able to test the content in style.”

Considering that the team has said in the past that it wants to get the expansion out this month, that puts the release window somewhere in the last week of July.

Path of Exile previews the upcoming Harbour Bridge area

Players testing Path of Exile’s upcoming The Fall of Oriath are going to be hit with a beta server wipe later this week when Act 8 lands for testing. That means new content to play, including the new Harbour Bridge area for people to explore. And you can preview the area right now with the video just below, so you don’t have to head to the bridge with no idea what it will look like.

Of course, it’s a short preview, just giving the barest idea of what the enemies and environment will be like in action… but it’s rather pretty regardless. Whether you’re in the beta test or just waiting for the full release, Path of Exile players will want to take a look.

Path of Exile optimizes the crap out of its new beta build

Lag spikes and stuttering framerates may be a thing of the past in Path of Exile. The devs announced that with its next beta build for The Fall of Oriath, they are implementing changes that will keep FPS at a playable pace even when players are spamming the heck out of flashy skills.

“In Wave 3 of the Beta, we have significantly improved the speed of creating and destroying objects. This was the primary cause of spikes when using a lot of skills. We can now create thousands of skill effects per second without significantly slowing down the frame rate,” the studio reported. “We have also added a new feature called Dynamic Resolution. This is a feature that allows us to maintain high frame rates even as the amount of particles increase by decreasing the resolution of the 3-D scene temporarily.”

The team also devoted some screen space to sharing behind-the-scenes insights into the expansion’s soundtrack. You can listen to a little of that after the break!

Path of Exile starts selling Fall of Oriath supporter packs

Money talks — and it paves the way to betas, as we’ve seen many times in this genre. So if you’re a little nervous about not getting into the Path of Exile: Fall of Oriath summer beta test, well, the team at Grinding Gear Games is gracious enough to allow you to pay them a few bucks and they’ll leave the back door open for you.

Supporter packs for the upcoming expansion are now for sale, all of which offer “immediate beta access” in case you’re not into delayed gratification. The packs start at $30 and range up to a staggering $480. Kids? Bad news: You’re not going to eat this summer. Dad’s got to get his video game shinies.

In addition to Fall of Oriath beta keys, the packs contain premium currency, titles, the soundtrack, an array of armor sets, weapon effects, cloaks, social frames, a t-shirt, and an art book.
