Massively OP's Weirdest MMORPG Stories of 2016: Richard Garriott's Blood Art

We're counting down Massively OP's weirdest MMORPG stories of 2016!

lord-british-blood-reliquary-croppedAnd the #1 weirdest MMORPG story of 2016 is...

... that time when Richard Garriott sold his blood for Shroud of the Avatar, as we wrote in a pair of articles over the summer.

The real story is a little bit more complicated, of course. Shroud of the Avatar's Richard "Lord British" Garriott and Starr "Darkstarr" Long donated their blood to be used in 10 pieces of "blood reliquary" artwork created by Steve Brudniak; the artwork was then put on Ebay for an initial bid of $5000, though they were moved to the game's website following what was likely an issue with Ebay's rules. The price has increased as each one sells, and they do indeed sell; as I write this, in December, only one Lord British reliquary remains for sale (at $13,000), while two Darkstarr pieces remain (at $12,000 and $13,000).

Proceeds from the sales benefit both the game and a designated medical charity, which is actually pretty cool.

Massively OP's Weirdest MMORPG Stories of 2016: That World of Warships Steven Seagal thing

We're counting down Massively OP's weirdest MMORPG stories of 2016!

Coming in at #2 in our countdown is that whole World of Warships Steven Seagal thing, detailed in a couple of different articles we got stuck writing this past summer.

Wargaming basically signed actor and dojo master Steven Seagall as a promotional figure, dubbing him a "personal Heroic Battle Advisor" for World of Warships, which is actually not a terrible game and doesn't deserve this, truly. It sort of sounds like a funny joke, like teaming up with budget Chuck Norris to sell cash-shop items, except it doesn't really come off that way -- maybe it's lost in translation. In the promo video, Seagal goes from uncomfortably touring the studio to playing a ukulele to deadpanning that The Missouri is his favorite battleship -- "because I was on The Missouri." That he was on The Missouri in a movie is never actually vocalized. Bizarre indeed.

Massively OP's Weirdest MMORPG Stories of 2016: The Endless Forest Returns

We're counting down Massively OP's weirdest MMORPG stories of 2016!

Clocking in at #3 on our list is Endless Forest Returns, which is explained in Justin's piece The Endless Forest devs seek funds for a remake.

The 2006 MMO-kinda Endless Forest is described as "a whimsical multiplayer online magical deer fantasy" in which players play as deer that communicate via sound and perform activities like roaming through the woods and rubbing against trees. 170,000 registered players thought that sounded worth checking out over the last decade.

This year, the developers who built the game outdid themselves, turning to Indiegogo for help funding a sequel to the deer-based MMO called The Endless Forest: The Second Decade. They have raised nearly €25,000 as I write this. It's happening. Weird, yes. But also awesome.

Massively OP's Weirdest MMORPG Stories of 2016: Hello Kitty TERA

We're counting down Massively OP's weirdest MMORPG stories of 2016!

Coming in at #4 on our list is TERA's Hello Kitty promotion, as chronicled in my own piece TERA and Hello Kitty make a purrrfect couple, though the title is entirely Justin's wonderbad brainchild.

Yes, this year En Masse partnered with Sanrio to add Hello Kitty lootboxes to the action-combat fantasy MMORPG, complete with Hello Kitty outfits, accessories, uniforms, and consumables. (Admittedly, the backpacks and pig-wearing-a-cat-suit were inexplicably cute.) "If you had any immersions left in your MMORPGs," we wrote, "consider them well and truly broken now."

Massively OP's Weirdest MMORPG Stories of 2016: Trove's Porter Potties

Today we're kicking off a countdown of Massively OP's weirdest MMORPG stories of 2016!

Coming in at #5 on our list is Trove's Porter Potties, as explained in an Eliot-penned piece called Trove now allows you to make a toilet that lets you fly.

"Wingardium Flushiosa! Porcelain throne levitation and so much more!" Trion wrote. "We've got so much to talk about that we're flush with anticipation! [...] Porter Potty: This brand new mount is available now but you’ll need guts to make this plucky porcelain potty. Just because you CAN craft it, does that mean you SHOULD craft it? Yes. Very much so."

So, you know. That exists.
