WRUP: This game existed, no one cared edition

The above screenshot is from Fantasy Earth Zero, a title that was developed by Square-Enix, launched to a resounding thud, got resurrected by another company, launched in the US and then closed a hot minute later. It had a tumultuous history is what I’m getting at here. I kind of liked it, although not enough to put it first or second or third or so forth on my list of games that I wanted to play, which kind of explains why the game closed down when it did.

The end! No moral. Just What Are You Playing, wherein we tell you what we’re going to be playing tomorrow and then you tell us what you’re going to be playing down in the comments. What does that have to do with the first paragraph? What does anything have to do with anything, dude. Just roll with it.

WRUP: Chroma Squad is a thing of joy edition

If you had told me when I was 17 that I wanted to play a pixelated turn-based strategy game in which I got to manage my own team of sentai characters, I would have responded with an eye-roll and a loud “duh.” Because of course I did. I still want that now! Only now I can actually play that, and it’s called Chroma Squad, and I literally care about nothing else except that it exists and it works and it’s beautiful.

Balance concerns? Difficulty curves? Options available? I do not care about any of that. All I wanted was to get me some turn-based custom sentai creation, and look, I have it.

So you can probably guess part of my entry for this week’s installment of What Are You Playing, but can you guess the rest of the staff? Oh, you can? Well, aren’t you smart. Why don’t you share what you’ll be playing down in the comments, smart guy? I mean that. Totally serious.

WRUP: Throw hams at hyenas edition

Folks, do you find yourself with too much ham in your house? If not, go buy some ham, then throw it at some vicious hyenas. Note that I said “at” and not “to,” in case that was unclear. I am advocating spending like $200 on ham and then hurling it, at high velocity, toward the nearest hyena. Even if that means getting in your car and going to the zoo, jumping the fence, and beaning some stupid hyena with a glazed ham.

You have to admit, those stupid not-dog losers deserve to be hit in the face with processed pig meat.

Before you get on with throwing ham, though, you should probably check out this week’s installment of What Are You Playing. Not because it has vital information regarding hams and hyenas, no; because we want to tell you what we’re up to over the weekend and we’re curious about your weekend plans. Or at least what they would have been before you flung a ham at a vicious predator that can chase you down and bite off your legs. Read more

WRUP: What ever happened with that button thing edition

Does anyone remember this? This was a thing that happened. I wrote a news post about it. A thing was done with a button, stuff took place… I mean, I seriously never bothered checking up on it again, what happened when the timer on that ran out? Does anyone know? Was that the button that kept the world turning? Is the world still turning? We might want to get out and check.

The important thing is that I’m curious about what ever wound up happening with the button, but not curious enough to do the five seconds of research on Google to answer the question. Maybe there were kittens involved, who knows.

Anyhow, that was all I had for the week. I’m packing for a trip again, I’m distracted. Listen, just… head on down to the comments and let us know what you’re playing this weekend, like we did up above. It’s What Are You Playing, you know how the deal works. Read more

WRUP: Yes, there was a new Star Wars trailer edition

If you managed to avoid all contact with the internet this week, you might have missed that the next Star Wars film got a new trailer this week. Otherwise, you couldn’t stop hearing about it. Like, every five minutes. It certainly exists, and there sure are characters on the screen, and it looks like your grandfather is cosplaying as Han Solo with a Chewbacca that hasn’t aged a day or something.

Needless to say, if you aren’t a fan of Star Wars or just don’t particularly care much, it’s been a week of everyone acting like the world is coming to an end while you just sort of look on in confusion.

You can feel free to talk about that in the comments below, or you can let us know what you’re playing this weekend. That is the name of the game here, after all – What Are You Playing? Maybe you’re playing “watch the same two-minute trailer over and over until I see its ghostly afterimage in my retinas.” I won’t judge.

WRUP: Hourly content update edition

Over the past few years, we’ve seen developers fall more and more in love with the idea of making faster and smaller updates to their games. Clearly, the reason people are disappointed with a given patch has nothing to do with the content of the patch and how much it adds and everything to do with the speed of updates. So we propose the new hourly patch model, in which developers take the server offline every 10 minutes to patch in 1% of a new dungeon or map or quest. Delivering the fastest fragments of content you can imagine!

We already use it on Massively Overpowered, more or less! Our current content update is What Are You Playing, in which you tell us what you’re doing for the weekend after we’ve told you what we’re doing. Community interaction! It’s a great thing. In another hour, look forward to our guide to reading other guides to playing your favorite class. Read more

WRUP: Twilight over Eorzea edition

It’s hard to make a storyline that leads perfectly into an expansion. There’s always more that could be done, the challenge of making something that feels like a conclusion while at the same time giving a logical reason to move on to a new set of conflicts and challenges. So while I have some conflicting feelings about the end of Final Fantasy XIV‘s 2.0 storyline, I’m overall happy with how it creates a bridge to the next era, giving players a reason to venture north while wrapping up conflicts… and still laying the groundwork for familiar issues to be addressed.

It’s a feeling much like the ending of a week leading into a weekend, to use a rather tortured construction to bring us along to our next installment of What Are You Playing. No expansion gaps here, folks, just us telling you what we’ll be up to over the next two days and you telling us likewise. And then we burn our homes to the ground and run away? Maybe that’s taking the analogy too far. Read more

WRUP: How to fry and eat your motorcycle edition

There comes a time in every woman’s life, as well as the lives of most men and the occasional CGI humanoid monster, when you need to eat some fried motorcycle. First, get your fryer ready; you’ll need to make sure it’s big enough to fry the whole motorcycle, not just part of it. Otherwise the frying process won’t really seal in the flavor. Also, make sure to fry it in either motor oil or peanut oil. Do not use canola oil; the police will arrest you and send you to Motorcycle Cooking Jail.

Anyhow, that more or less wraps up the discussion of frying and eating your motorcycle, but we do still have What Are You Playing going on down here. You can find out what we’re playing just past the break, and you can let us know what you’ll be up to in the comments. Have a good weekend, and as always, remember: Never fry a motorcycle you aren’t serious about marrying.

WRUP: Angry dot jpeg edition

The image above is a picture of Prowl from IDW’s Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye, which is an utterly great comic that you should be reading and hopefully already are, so I don’t need to tell you that. Prowl is a jerk. Prowl gets very angry when things don’t go exactly his way.

Do not be Prowl. Do not flip tables when you have issues with pre-orders or when your 13-year-old game goes into maintenance mode with one final storyline or when someone says that a game that’s having issues might not have a bright future. Be someone better than Prowl. Although turning into a police car would be pretty sweet. Especially that new armored one from…

What Are You Playing, right. We talk about that past the break. Let us know in the comments!

WRUP: Guess who’s back edition

At the start of the week, I journeyed far across the land, venturing into the wilds of the northwest armed only with my wits and boundless determination. There, I was set upon by many ills and challenges, but I was undeterred in my charge. Today, I have completed my journey, and I tell you now that the great best Iktho-Mar has been slain by my hand!

For reasons that I am not entirely clear upon, that means I finally have What Are You Playing back in my hands, which means I get to open off with absurd non sequiturs once again. I’m sure you’re all thrilled. Here, have a picture of a capybara, and check out what we’ll be playing down below. Also, let us know what you’re doing in the comments!
