Configurable corp friendly fire is coming to EVE Online

21

February 17th’s Tiamat patch for EVE Online will “give player corporations the ability to configure whether friendly fire within the corporation is considered legal or if it will carry criminal penalties,” CCP explained in a dev blog released this week. Possible penalties include security status hits, criminal flagging, and CONCORD intervention in high-sec space.

Why the changes? CCP says that it wants players to have more ways to “enjoy the social dynamics that come from being part of a group.” The firm also sees the change enabling corps to recruit “riskier” characters while maintaining control over how they treat other members.

Tithian Nyphur Dueling is 1v1, but you can still have larger battles. Either all combattants would need to be globally flagged as suspects or, more realistically, the corp should have the intra-corp PVP switch enabled. Ultimately that’s the corp’s choice, if they want to organise regular PVP battles in-corp and don’t want to move to nullsec then they should switch the PVP flag on.

Tithian Nyphur Firstly, no. Duels are between 2 persons. Secondly, if youre a “pvp” corp that stays in highsec, your not a pvp corp. You can do your 5v5 or 10v10 in Low or Null.

Nyphur If they add a corp wide notification that friendly fire is enabled, along with the 24h grace period I can see that work. Also, I haven’t dueled in… ever actually, can 2 gangs duel each other, as in 5v5 or 10v10? If not, a duel’s practical application for pvp corps is pretty limited.

Tithian We already have that functionality with the Duel feature for when anyone needs to practice PvP. And from what I remember from the reddit thread about this, the new switch takes 24h to activate or deactivate just like entering or leaving a war.

greywolfe_joystiq this option allows to switch OFF the ability to shoot at friends. Until now, CONCORD did not get involved when you shot someone from your own corporation.

The ‘switch’ should be on a character level, not based on the corp.Have all players automatically have friendly fire turned to off and if some people want to practice PVP with their corpmates (a common occurance in PVP corps) the option to turn it on is there. Now with the new system imagine joining a corp that you think is safe, only for the switch being turned on at a convenient time (i.e. when you’re hauling all your stuff to your new base of operations).

SallyBowls1 You’re not thinking EVE enough. ;) The old way, it was an always on risk. The new way, we get to lull people into a sense of security before turning it on (or off, depending on your perspective), thereby heightening the emotional output, making it all that much more delicious.

SallyBowls1 That’s correct.  It’s called AWOXing (google it), and up until now, corps didn’t have the option to turn OFF the ability for corp members to kill other corp members at will.  CONCORD would just ignore it, treating intra-corp violence as something to be dealt with by the corp, none of their business.  Now corps can actually make it safe to fly with your corp-mates.  Well, as safe as flying ever is in New Eden…
