Trove takes to the skies in a new patch

What more can sandvox Trove add to its beta program? How about the power to rebel against the forces of gravity and take to the skies!

In the Take Flight update that went live on Tuesday, Trove added the ability for players to equip wings and be able to soar over the land. This is part of an ongoing effort to add sky, earth, and water mechanics to the game.

The update doesn’t just stop at wings, however. There’s also the new bow-using Shadow Hunter class that can see through walls, the Radiant Ruins world littered with traps and treasures, and the new Runecrafting profession.

Rebel Engie ZNSinger No offence was taken, I was just amused. MWM is the studio behind City of Titans, which is one of the City of Heroes successor projects. It’s in development but because of its association with the high profile closure of City of Heroes its received a very disproportionate amount of attention for its development status. And we keep saying we will be next gen (we’re using Unreal Engine 4, which is a pretty good start :D). And I’m their community manager and I’ve participated in many a Massively discussion in that role. So, I thought maybe you knew that. No biggie, don’t sweat it.

Sorry, I don’t know your avatar. Don’t know what “MWM” is either.
Any possible link or implication derived from my comments is unintentional.
Apologies for any offence anyway.

Hot off the Press!
They just announced on TwitchTV:
– Dancing
  – Boats
  – Pirate Captain class (with one handed pistol)
  – Underwater worlds (or caves?)
  – Increased drops for Sky biome bosses
… are coming.

Not sure if I should laugh or cry to the fact that Trove added flying to their game before Blizzard added flying (back) into WoW/WoD.

Rebel Engie ZNSinger Heh, is that a hint? I’m not sure how many Massively people have my named and avatar linked with MWM these days…anyway the right solution for the problem changes depending on how a lot of other things are handled, not least where things are instanced and where things are open world. City of Titans will probably be using a lot more instances than Trove, which is almost all open world and therefore needed that kind of mechanic. So our solution would be based in team reward distribution instead.

Of course, many other games that are open world and need that kind of mechanic don’t have it, so still kudos to Trove for properly addressing it in a way that keeps people happy.

One of my favourite features in Trove is the way grouping works:  you only have to be close to people to get the same rewards from them completing things in the world and they don’t get any less rewards for you being close.
It’s a feature that other MMOs calling themselves “next gen” should seriously think about implementing.

Xijit Because characters with wings that glide can only be ripping off of ArcheAge? Flying is GENERIC. The idea of characters with wings is everywhere, and even in MMO’s ArcheAge isn’t the only example. Aion does it too. Use your head. Just because you last saw the idea in ArcheAge doesn’t mean everywhere else you see it is ripping off of it. I will say it again: the concept of flying and gliding characters is GENERIC. Not so often applied in this particular way in an MMO but still far too generic for comments like yours, and ideas similar enough to help inspire Trion’s version abound. It’s just not that hard to come up with.

Xijit Aywren boredinBC (aka Daniel James Clarke) Implying that ArcheAge came up with the innovation of… ‘gliders’? A thing that exists in the real world.

Rebel Engie So it’s Minecraft with the priorities reversed? It’s an MMORPG that gets its unique edge by taking some cues from Minecraft. I still like the sound of it.
