Guild Wars 2 celebrates the Lunar New Year

20

It’s the Canthan Lunar New Year in Guild Wars 2, so the question you have to be asking yourself is: Do you feel lucky? Well, do you, punk?

If you are feeling lucky or in need of a fun diversion, GW2 is bringing back the Dragon Ball arena with a few new improvements. By participating in the arena, players can attempt to win a lucky great ram lantern backpack. The Lunar New Year is also replete with lucky envelopes to trade, divine lucky envelopes to buy, and homemade lucky envelopes to gain from achievements. Each envelope has a chance at gifting players with cool items, and if that’s not enough, the community will enjoy a 15% bonus to magic find during the event. That’s a lot of luck!

We’ve also got a look at the new crimson lion weapons in a video by Massively OP friend Bog Otter after the break.

Oskiee Yes, it is RNG. Because if they handed these out free or by questing, the developers wouldn’t get a dime for all their work. People need to realize RNG is what keeps ArenaNet in business. So bitching about it is like asking for ArenaNet to quit making these weapon skins or make GW2 a subscription game. Funny thing is that there’s even RNG in subscription-based games. So RNG isn’t going away…ever.

MatthewRiddle rgkeydet Yep! There’s also a chance at a ”jackpot” item inside, which sells for 8g 88s 88c. :) Or if you don’t like praying to RNGesus, you can sell the envelopes on the TP for a profit.

It’s a fun little event that was a nice, unexpected bonus. And it’s great to have Dragon Ball Arena back and the Queen’s Pavilion looks very nice with all the Canthan decorations. I do wish that one or two of the gem store additions with the Canthan theme had been used as festival rewards instead. The back piece is the only thing to go after and you can buy that on the TP for just over 1 gold. There’s just not much reason at all to care about the lucky envelopes. And there’s no in-game lore to go with any of it. No explanation for why Divinity’s Reach is celebrating it this year but not last. Or even that any of this is Cantha related or even what Cantha is if you don’t already know Guild Wars lore. And of course Marjory should be there (but of course can’t this year because she has other things to be worrying about in the story).

I think that all of the holidays need another content addition and polishing pass before they’re ready to be left alone every year (with new rewards added every year of course). It’s wrong when the focus of Halloween is on Mad King Thorn’s son instead of the king himself after all, and Toymaker Tixx needs a holiday themed story to interact with him.

SeedEve The Crimson Lion Focus is especially cool. It looks like a fist weapon instead of a standard focus. If I had a character that used a focus, I’d buy it right away.

There are two ram backpacks in the envelopes, as well as the crimson lion weapon skins for black lion tickets.

The Dragon Ball arena is still quite fun.
10 victories for the right to buy more lucky envelopes though… that’s a bit harsh for casual play.

It’s a decent lotery system. A guaranteed 88s88c for every gold spent on an envelope, consumables, as well as a chance for a more valuable trophy valued at 8g88s88c or a ram backpack… I wouldn’t mind if RNG was like that more often.
