Guild Wars 2 shows off Stronghold gameplay

Kind of taking a drubbing here, Tyria. I'm sorry.

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is bringing a new type of PvP to the game with Strongholds. There are shades of the original game’s Guild vs. Guild battles along with some touches of MOBA flavor. But you don’t have to take our word for it; you can see for yourself in a new article explaining how a Stronghold battle functions, with two teams each trying to defend a base while defeating the opposing team’s lord.

There are several extra NPCs that can be summoned for various purposes as well as elite guards defending the lord, but the NPCs are meant to add more tactical considerations rather than turn the match into a PvE experience. Even the powerful heroes that players can summon are focused on objectives, not mixing it up with players, which means that players will need to work to defend their NPCs from the other team. If you’d like to see all of this in action, you can hear all about it during ArenaNet’s stream at 3:00 p.m. EST today.

Ceimash ThunderJackson maldito31619 I know this.

That is why I said his idea about the engine not being able to handle it is outdated since they fixed the culling issue at launch and can have 100 players on screen and all there effects. Hell, they even added options for lower end PCs to have low res place holder models if they can’t handle the load.

His argument might of had some weight nearly three years ago, but not today when the game handles hundreds of players on the same map PvPing without culling.

Walpurgisnacht Zergs = army. I think the point of WvW is army vs army, not one Elementalist against an army of 40.

ThunderJackson maldito31619 They do it perfectly well in WvW so I really don’t know what you guys are on about.

Craywulf Walpurgisnacht No, it would be a risk for relying on zergs. Besides, the zergs would be able to protect themselves from elementalists with guardians.

maldito31619 That idea might have been valid back in 2012 when there was horrible culling in WvW, now-a-days in a game where the biggest compliant from people is “The game is too zergy”; it just doesn’t fly.

Get a decent CPU and you can have 100 players slinging spells and whacking each other with swords and the game runs just fine.

DirectX9 game in 2015. CPU bound game. No wonder they can only accommodate 5v5. Thier engine can’t handle it.

shanoyu Backuplight TBPlayer2112 It may be possible to configure a private match for more players. Of course that may require more tuning of the NPC’s. Personally I would of liked to see more but if they feel that 5v5 is the way to go then who am I to argue? Besides, no one has really gotten their hands on it yet.
I’ll pass judgement after I’ve played a few rounds. Which I totally plan to. This looks like a lot of fun.

Walpurgisnacht So a sword kills 2-3 guys at close range and you’re complaining that a ranged weapon only kills 5 as opposed to your wishful 40. If it could do that it would make close range weapons obsolete. A WvW guild would only need 5 Staff elementalist to kill entire guild. I’m not sure you fully understand the sacrifice of balancing weapons for mass warfare.
