EverQuest Next might be safe according to the head honcho of Daybreak, but PlanetSide 2 is in for a rocky time: PS2 Creative Director Matt Higby has tendered his resignation, telling fans on Reddit that he’s been considering the move for a while and that the “reorganization provided the right opportunity” for his departure.

He wrote,

Working on Planetside 2 has been the absolute highlight of my career, but after 4 years working on the game, it’s time for a change. Today was my last day on the Planetside 2 team and at Daybreak games. This is a move I’ve been considering for a while now, and the reorganization provided the right opportunity for me to exit.

Planetside 2 is in great hands, with terrific people who honestly care about the game and the players. I can’t stress this enough, the folks working on every aspect of the game, developers, marketing, community are talented, hard working people who care more than you can imagine – I’m fully confident they’re going to do an amazing job on the next leg of the journey.

Finally, I wanted to thank all of you in the Planetside 2 community with whom I’ve shared the last few years, whether in stream chat, tweets, pms or comments you guys have motivated and inspired me all along. You are an amazing community that I’m looking forward to remaining a member of for a long time.

Higby further urges players to support the remaining team: “A lot of that team is still there, still working their asses off, and they need your support right now.”

PlanetSide 2, which launched in 2012 on PC, is currently in the midst of a beta for its PlayStation 4 release.

I don’t like Higby because of how he handled the PS4 beta keys for Planetside 2 but this very bad news for SOE. I don’t think they have a future, tbh.

solipsis daicon Mansemat eh VS was overpowered. Higby showed players the data that supported the nerfs he had to make and everyone on VS hated him for it. That’s the one thing I kind of respect about Higby, is that he was able to overcome faction pressure and do the nerfs he saw fit.

daicon Mansemat All Higby really did was nerf Vanu weapons so his faction NC could win alerts. I hate him. ^_^

ITPalg So lemme get this right. You think that because some drivel is spouted on Twitter that it must be true? A company is acquired, changes its name and then basically purges itself of some of its highest profile, customer facing personnel but because they say, “Everything is fine!” on Twitter, all concerns should be handwaved?

PS2’s Senior Programmer Codeforge left Daybreak today as well.

It was a very difficult decision to make, but it feels like the right thing to do and the right time to do it. After…

daicon He’s the Creative Director. He’s the one that’s responsible for the game being the way it is. He is or rather was the ultimate authority in regard to game design for PS2.  He’s the guy that desides what the game is, how it works, and how you play it. He works with the other directors to make sure that everything comes to fruition.

Can anyone tell me what Higby did for PS2 that was so great?

I understand Higby is a highly visible face, but it’s hard for me to understand why his departure is catastrophic for PS2. Did he fix alot of stuff? Or save the game?
