Former Guild Wars 2 writer becomes Bungie’s ‘loremaster’

Former ArenaNet writer John Ryan is now Bungie’s “editor/loremaster,” according to his Twitter account. Ryan started at ANet in 2010 and worked on Guild Wars 2’s dialogue, lore, and narrative. He explained his past and present role to fans on Twitter:

First, my new job at Bungie will be editing and riding herd on lore. I’m not writing, per se, but I’ll be working with some great writers.

Second, I’m not, nor have I ever been, a lead story writer at ArenaNet. It seems some media outlets are confused about that. There’s only been one lead writer for the five-ish years I’ve been at ArenaNet. And that is the one and only @BobbyStein.

I don’t know how much impact I’ll have on story at Bungie. I’ll play some role, I suppose but, again, there are so many great people at Bungie who are passionate, talented, and hard at work at making great narrative experiences for you. I’m lucky to be part of a legendary studio, and I only hope to match the energy and vision of everyone at Bungie.

In short: I will edit, I will work with writers, I will keep an eye on lore and style. I’m part of a great studio. I’m ready to kick ass.

If you fail to see the humor stop then. Frankly I paid money in the drive as did you. Let others have the say they want.
Let the admins do what they do. Who knows who will be the troll – it could just be you?

woolydub More likely just because he’s speaking there. ;)

From all accounts there is a lot of creative freedom in ANet.

Dope_Danny GW2’s story has improved a lot since the launch content. ;)

Season 2 of GW2 was fantastic so I hope this means that story and lore will finally be given the focus it deserves in Destiny. And by focus I mean it doesn’t end up on the cutting room floor or stuck off in some website.

Good luck John, go help make Destiny 2 what Destiny 1 was supposed to be (it’s pretty much too late story wise for Destiny 1 I’m thinking).

dirtyklingon harryhol Asura aren’t anything like dwarves. They do fill the same narrative niche that gnomes do, but in tone they are completely different. If I left GW2 tomorrow and resubbed to WoW and rolled a gnome, I wouldn’t get the same feeling from that character at all. But either way, they are definitely not anything like dwarves, though one could make the argument that the Norn are.

Asura are my favorite race in an MMO and there’s no where else you can find them!

harryhol dirtyklingon You can tell most of the people commenting here haven’t played GW2 since launch. It’ll be interesting to see how people’s opinions change after Heart of Thorns comes out and they give it another try. Season 2 was pretty great and HoT’s will only continue the trend.

Most MMO’s abandon story after launch, except for “here’s an excuse for a new dungeon or raid”. Where GW2 has instead greatly improved their story to the point it’s the main focus of the game. It’s the anti-SWTOR who was all about story before launch and then dropped it afterwards.
