Star Trek Online’s command ships will buff friends

It seems as though there is always room in Star Trek Online to add more ships, and the team is hard at work putting the finishing touches on a bundle of command battlecruisers that are coming to each of the factions.

Lead Systems Designer Phil Zeleski penned a new dev diary yesterday to talk abut the creation and details behind these tier 6 powerhouses including the new inspiration mechanic: “Since their primary purpose is team support, it made sense to have a number of team buffs that they could use.”

The command ships will vary slightly between factions, but all will be able to equip cannons and use their hanger bays to launch small craft to help with the fight.

I agree with the complaints of so many others… STO needs another tier 5 or tier 6 ship like I need another lump on my latex forehead (speaking as a longtime trekker). What it needs is to get back to the core of 40 years of the Star Trek universe; providing better immersion, better storytelling, and better versatility. The game has become a bloated pig of competing currencies in only 5 years, half the time it takes most games to develop so many different monetary units. And for the first thirty odd levels there is so little flexibility in what you can do with your character because even if you’re shilling hard cash into the system, you still only get three types of ship to pick from, and your captain character is locked in for many of their traits and racial characteristics from level zero.

It’s not a game that encourages free form play, and definitely not social interaction with other players… fleets are only interested in you if you can shovel resources into their bucket or act as a sink for excess loot they can’t store; not if you can fight, or role play, or design game elements. And of course, the one system that could salvage this, the content generator, which is where all the cool immersive story-telling stuff in the game is actually to be found, is locked behind two paywalls; you have to be a paying player, and then you have to buy a token to create content. Most of the best trek canon stories I have found in STO are all in the Foundry system.

I really wish the games designers at Cryptic could get out from under the thumb of the suits at PWE and Cryptic and create the games they are capable of making… you know, like their descendants at Paragon Studios did with City of Heroes, who turned out great content and immersive ideas at all levels for a decade, instead of just adding more ad more currencies and high-level components targeting the paying members and leaving the freebies out in the wind.

The ships’ models look great, but I’m less interested in new ships then I am in seeing this expansion’s story become something other than “we’re protecting these graverobbers from their rightly aggrieved victims, because reasons.”  I’ll keep waiting.

Pashgan kofteburger Have there been any MMO stores that aren’t based on macro-transactions?

Chuki792 STO’s F2P implementation is good, but LOTRO is a bit better in that you earn cash shop currency by completing achievements. Imagine if you received 100 zen for every achievement accomplished in STO.

Rustybladez I never said it was easy or fast to convert dilithium. At the end of the day I am not even interested in these command ships. I have a couple of carriers already and managing the fighter resources isn’t fun IMO.

EO_Lonegun Rustybladez At 8000 dilithium cap (if I recall today) that works out to 48 zen per day.  To get a tier 6 ship you are looking at 63 days of just spending an hour or so mining dilithium.

TiaNadiezja Rustybladez  This! I remember being wowed that I had played for nearly 2 years, was barely halfway through the FE’s and had yet to spend a single penny! It was only after getting into my career and having more disposable income than my girlfriend could spend that I decided I’d pony up for some ships… though I do agree that once you spend that first zen, its easy to want to do it again but at no time did I feel compelled to splash out beyond my own desire to captain a Vesta.

Say what you like about lockboxes, STO has THE BEST F2P model around, hands down.
