Star Citizen’s Roberts talks upcoming release schedule

How big is 2015 shaping up to be for Star Citizen fans? Pretty freaking big, if Chris Roberts‘ latest Letter from the Chairman is any indication. “We are entering into the tightest schedule we’ve ever had for public releases,” Roberts writes. “In short order, you will see Arena Commander 1.1 (now with REC!), the FPS module, and the so-called social module, our first foray into the persistent universe.”

Roberts has a lot more to say, including bits about the aforementioned REC, upcoming community events, and a playable version of the FPS module that will debut at PAX East.

Yes, pretty much. Sony and Microsoft won’t allow the close community service CIG have now, they won’t allow frequent and unscheduled updates that are free of charge, and so on. CIG will be bound to their publish and fee policy. This is the main obstacles, in combination with the inferior hardware on consoles.

CR has also said that he don’t want to take away development resources (manpower and money) to make a console port, so Sony and/or Microsoft would have to pay him (millions) to do it – if it was technically possible.

I certainly hope so.
I was having a decent and enjoyable discussion about the game over at PC Gamer until that troll showed up.
I responded to him a few times, until he started with his usual nonsensical rants with his links to Kickstarter and the schedule posted there, a schedule which has since had to be revised since the scope of the game became much lager than expected at the time.

Sometimes I find it amusing to respond to him, but most of the time I just shake my head, laugh at him and move on.
I got far better things to do than reading and responding to his crazy rants.

I think you are overestimating the power of the consoles.
Consoles have a fixed hardware, which allows developers to develop games for them to the bone, as opposed to PC which has a widely varying set of system specifications, and not just on the hardware side.

An article at PC Gamer said the following.
It’s not uncommon for developers of indie PC games to hope that their creations will ultimately make it to consoles. Cloud Imperium Games holds out no such hope for http://www.pcgamer.com/game/star-citizen/, however, and in fact Eric “Wingman” Peterson says it couldn’t be done anyway, because consoles, including the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, simply don’t have the power to drive the game.

Besides, the console owners Sony and MS are unlikely to allow Roberts to do things his way.
IF the platform holders (Sony & Microsoft) allow us to update the code and data without restrictions and odious time consuming QC procedures, IF they allow our community to openly interact with each other across platforms then I would CONSIDER supporting them.

They had to set a limit to how many players who could get alpha access because of the network issues and costs involved. CIG had to be able to control this somehow so when the alpha slots run out on April 16, 2014, and about 430,000 people had gotten access, CIG removed the alpha slots from the packages and introduced the AC pass for $5. The $5 is mean to cover the costs to scale up the network and cover the costs.

Yes, true. Especially that it’s possible to make games players want. We’ve talked about shallow games with boring tasks before, but I think another reason people want better games is because other games most often are narrow inside one genre. They’re either space simulators, first person shooters, adventure games, strategy games, and so on. No one have tried to combine many/most genres into one game before, like Chris Roberts is effectively doing.

Why? Because of several things. Here are some of them:

First, traditional publishers are stuck in the old way of thinking what people want. They have little feel for the market because of the distance to their customers, failure to communicate with them on a daily basis, involving gamers in their development plans and progress.

Secondly, traditional publishers focus on what they think will bring money back to the investors, and they’re also constantly under pressure from investors who want their money worth, so they tend to release games (too) early and with a limited set of features so the sale can commence.

Third, this also makes the creative part of the project bound by making only the feaures the publisher and investors want. It’s frustrating for them to be told to cut this and that, and make it so and so, just because the game must be finished before xmas, when they know it won’t be good enough. They are the guys who knows what works and not, but they’re whipped into submission by people who often don’t understand the creative details needed. So the creative side of a game project gets frustrated and unhappy with what they’re doing.

Fourth, traditional publishers dare not ask for money from investors, or fund themselves, such a massive and ambitious project. It’s a daunting thought to start such a thing. Partly, they don’t think it can be done (within reasonable time and money limits), partly they don’t think gamers want it, so why should they ask invstors to throw a heap of money on such a daring – and, in their mind, unecessary – project. See first and second pts. above.

Fifth, to try and make as much money as possible from sales, traditional publishers want to hit the broad market and that means consoles. The problem with that is consoles don’t have the muscles as the PC so a design descision is made to dumb down the game regarding fidelity and realism so it works on consoles, in addition to the PC. The console players may get something they can play but they’re not used to better, and PC players get a lobotomised version which they’re not happy with.

Star Citizen changes all this. Chris Roberts is a visionary genius who realize what gamers want and will embrace if they get a chance to play it. So he puts a lot of details, depth, fidelity, and immersion into a game that will span multiple genres.

Of course traditional publsihers are terrified. And even gamers. They don’t think it can be done so they voice all sorts of negative critics and try to discredit the project as much as they can.

As much as I hate the idea that this is actually happening, I just cant get myself to believe that it does not happen.

Roberts himself has made public statements where he says he supported various Kickstarter endeavors, and even had official posts on the SC website where he talks about games that’s on KS to spread the news.
That kind of approach it the honorable way to do it and something I would support all the way.

The big publishers on the other hand, I would be extremely surprised if are not keeping a close eye on SC and to some extent even fear its popularity and success so far, especially when you consider the potential damage it can do for them.

The publisher don’t like that because means that they would lose the control they currently have on the market, not all control but enough to cost them significant loss of profits.

There have been a few select and rather vocal, one in particular as I’m sure you are aware, who has been spreading so much hate and misinformation about the game and to such an extent, that many, myself included, have been wondering if they were actually paid by the big suits to do it or has been employees of those companies.

And I _really_ don’t want to be Tinfoil Hat Guy(tm) here, but I do wonder if some of the negativity is actually “negative PR spin” from internet sock puppets for competing games, and/or the established traditional publishers. Not that I would name Exactly Anyone (cough) as one possible suspect … :-)

Comedy aside, my point is that, if Chris Roberts pulls this off as intended, his game will essentially be living proof that popular, sucessful games can be created and sold without the need for the traditional publishing structure.

Some folks who make their money from the labor of others may well take this as something to be discouraged. I sometimes wonder how much of the current “crowdfunding is nothing but a total con game” general backlash we’re seeing lately is also bolstered by select people who have an agenda behind their complaints.

I wonder these things, because I once worked in Hollywood (nothing glamorous) and I was privy to some of the negative PR tricks the studios used on each other.
An example from some years ago …

The guy who called into the popular L.A. morning radio show, claiming that a named Big Star was yelling at his handlers in the parking lot of after a “sneak preview” showing of his latest film, angry that they got him involved with such a crappy movie.

The world press picked up on the radio bit, and the story went world-wide.

Problem was, the preview never existed. The police eventually sourced the call to the public relations department of a rival studio — a studio who had a competing film opening the same day as Big Star’s.

So, no, I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all, but I do wonder what people will get up to when big money is involved.

It only goes to show that you should never take what is said about something for granted, good or bad, without actually checking it out yourself.

There is allot of hate towards the game, and I think stems from a combination of its popularity with the fact that its gotten over $73 million exclusively from crowd funding and its completely open development.

People are so used to the traditional development model that I think they have a hard time believing and accepting that this actually can be done, and that we are somehow being cheated, despite all the proof to the contrary.

In a traditional development cycle, the game is in development for years behind closed doors, we usually don’t even know about it, and then its announced a few months to a year maybe before its released.

Here on the other hand we see all that’s happening from the concept stage to the finished product, and we even get to participate in it by testing the game early and providing feedback.

This has unfortunately lead to allot of people making unfounded claims ad predictions ranging from that it will take many more years than CIG has said because not its scope to it never being released at all.

And then of course we got the PC exclusive part.
I would not be surprised if allot of console games are angry or resentfully because this game will not be on their favorite console.
That’s not saying consoles are bad, they have their place just as the PC, just that the PC offers more power and flexibility.

But allot of these players probably want to play the game and think its great, but they cant afford or want to buy a PC to play it.
So I suspect these people talking bad about the game is really a way for them to try and convince themselves that they are not interested in or don’t like the game
