The Daily Grind: What’s the most successful MMO do-over?

Yesterday’s revelation that Final Fantasy XIV is up to four million registered accounts globally (not counting trials, Square insists!) is impressive to me not because it’s proof that subs are a brilliant idea in 2015 but because this game was a total dud at launch. Half the reason we’re all cheering for its comeback is that it’s clawed its way out of a dark and muddy hellhole. To rise again with the A Realm Reborn relaunch is actually amazing and admirable. Very few games ever get that chance at all, let alone nail it so well.

Marvel Heroes had a pretty striking turnaround last year with its do-over, too, such that pretty much everyone I know is now playing it. I’m thinking Star Wars Galaxies‘ NGE, however, will not make the cut. But surely there are other successes that deserve to be on the list. What’s the most successful MMO do-over, other than FFXIV?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I was one of the people who got burned with the initial release of FFXIV.  After having played FFXI for years I ponied up for the collector’s edition of FFXIV… what a disappointment.  I was sooooooo skeptical of the re-release.  When they first showed all the concept art, etc.. for A Realm Reborn it could have been A Turd Reborn for all I cared.

But then it came out and I was so happy to be so wrong.  FFXIV really is the most successful MMO “do-over”.

Most other MMO’s “do-overs” have really just been their F2P conversions if we count those.

If we do, then to me it’d be:

1) FFXIV
2) TERA
3) SWTOR

then on the bottom end probably Age of Conan and Champions Online, which I both absolutely loved before they went F2P.  Age of Conan is actually still pretty good as long as you’re a  subscriber, I just get miserly with F2P titles.

Isn’t FF14 the only MMO that was successfully redone.

As far as an entire ‘do over’ is concerned, FFXIV is all that I can think of.

Other MMOs may have had overhauls in business models and subsequently altered certain functionality in-game to accommodate but I’m not sure that really counts.

We sometimes call an MMO an evolving world but more often than not, that evolution simply means patching in additional content. It’s not common for a developer to go back and revise entire major systems in the game.

For instance, I freaking love TSW but I can’t stand the combat most of the time and the character models/animations could be better and make it an amazingly well rounded game. As it stands, I find it something very challenging to look past to continue playing. So much so, that now I only return for content patches, play them, then leave again.

I think a better question here might have been which “MMOs (or systems within an MMO) do you think need a major do-over and why?”

Would GW2 fit under this description?  Or is that considered more of an out-and-out remake?
I also think the various iterations of Runescape should be noted here.  While often overlooked in the MMO world, they are truly on the cutting edge of progressiveness.

I am not sure what you mean by that. But to get around that what I think you are going on about, I use the “oldest” filter to get to the ones I can’t see. But today, that option produces a blank page on all 3 browsers I use (IE, Firefox and Chrome). Something I’ve never seen before. :(
…I do however have slight work around. But it doesn’t show all the comments effected…only the ones that listed in the Avatar’s “View Profile Option”. By simply hitting reply on any of the comments listed on that page, will bring that relative thread up. I assume this works for all posters, but only thread by thread. I hope this helps.

ManastuUtakata FineFineValentine Madda Sadly what you’re experiencing is a totally different Livefyre bug that has existed for years. :D HOORAY FOR BUGS.

Maybe stretching the definition, but would you consider the EverQuest Progression Servers to be a “do-over”? They certainly brought a level of revitalization and drew back a bunch of people who were no longer seriously playing EQ.

SE did a great job of remaking FFXIV but I actually preferred the systems in the final patches of 1.0 over FFXIV:ARR.  I would still be playing if they would have just upgraded the engine and added major content to the 1.0 systems.  I still have a lot of respect for what they did.  The gear grinds and instanced dungeons just aren’t for me.

For FFXIV subs *are* a brilliant idea. :P
Outside of FFXIV I am hard-pressed to see any other game that tanked on launch as having made anything even close to that kind of comeback.
Diablo 3 is maybe not a classic MMO, but it did have a ton of things wrong with it at launch and by the time they got Reaper of Souls out it was a much, much better game.
