Dark Age of Camelot

Broadsword took Dark Age of Camelot offline for the better part of today, according to its website. Why? To push out patch 1.117C, which tweaks dopplegangers, adds a new quest to each battleground, offers eight new emotes, fixes a lot of bugs, and unveils a new “Casual Group Finder.”

The CGF “will allow players to queue for either an RvR or PvE group and be automatically placed in one once enough players in their level bracket and that fulfill pre-assigned group roles have been found,” according to the patch notes. Broadsword says that level brackets follow the existing battleground brackets with the exception of a dedicated level 50 tier.

The most important negative effect ToA had was that it totally fragmented the playerbase.  Whereas you used to have the PvE folks and the RvR folks, suddenly you had 100 different Master level steps to do, and dozens of different artifacts and scrolls to collect.  Everyone was off doing their little focused piece of the game instead of hundreds of people RvRing in massive campaigns.

phairoh Mendoras ogged451 Noble_Einherjar Celestia While i didnt start playing until right after ToA and was almost fully a PvP player. I can say when i did do PvE in DAoC it was fun, sometimes frustratingly so but still fun.

breetoplay WildarX Damonvile I think it’s because you’re just weird

Seriously though the only old mmo I really want to play is CoH. but I do think many of the lost/disillusioned mmo players should return to some of the older ones and give up being a part of the new shinny bigger “better” cycle.

I’m right there with you, Mendoras.  I loved ToA as well even though I mostly played the game for PvP.  ToA is what started my love of good PvE content.  I still have many fond memories of ML raids.

Muspel WildarX Damonvile it’s not just familiarity though.. I always jump back unto classic DAoC servers whenever there’s one up because I love it. Still think it’s one of the best MMOs even when directly compared to new stuff and you’re right I’m very familiar with and invested in it.

But I’m also very familiar with StarCraft: Brood War and Quake III Arena. I played those a huge amount back in the day and I just can’t get into them anymore even though I have very fond memories of them.

Some games just age better than others ;)

Shadanwolf Estranged krieglich I will say ESO’s Cyrodiil reminds me a LOT of New Frontiers DAoC. Which is kinda fitting… Firor is basically mr. ToA and NF ;)

*sigh* I get it but it does kill me a little bit inside… but then I haven’t been the target audience for DAoC for years now…
