Guild Wars 2 begins testing a streaming client

Getting in to play Guild Wars 2 will happen faster than ever before, thanks to a new streaming client that is coming to the servers in the next update.

A dev diary posted today says that this beta version of the client will facilitate patch downloads for all players by taking on the brunt of patch retrieval after a user has logged in to the game. Players will be able to enter the game once the progress bar hits a marker on the download while the downloader continues to work in the background. The client will also help new players to get into the game quickly by prioritizing the download of character creation and the starter areas.

This new streaming client will initially be limited to NA and EU servers, with China coming “at a later date.”

let’s hope it’s better than SWTOR’s streaming client.  I had to disable it i the .ini file just to play the game.   It wouldn’t connect.

I know im probably a super minority but id rather just have the mac client get a fix so it doesnt hard lock your machine when you try to access the auctioneers.

I’d prefer if they did something about the actual log in time than patching. Ever since the megasever once I pick a character to log in on I get up and find something else to do for about the next 5 minutes and hope when I come back I’m actually in game. I find that far more annoying than having to patch.

This game and SWTOR have needed this feature so badly. Don’t remember if SWTOR ever got it, but this is a good thing.

geekpobre Arekusu GW1’s streaming client was probably one of the most elegant ones to exist also.  It only downloaded what it needed, unless you let it sit idle.  I was always confused why they dropped that tech, considering you still have a loading screen when switching zones in GW2.

I think they are doing a few things on the back end now. For the past month Zones are taking much longer to load up to a minute in DR and when it does load it takes another minute or 2 for all the terrein objects to render espically in cities.
Seing hordes of generic toons appearing to levitate in multiple levels of Rata Sum because you can see through the floors is a bit ammusing but can get annoying after a while.

*Puts on tinfoil conspiracy cap*
Okay, this is clearly a case of “We’re readying for really fast download and install of the [soon to be] upcoming expansion HoT”.   They are getting ready for the horde of return players as well as the already current population all wanting to upgrade the client and load to the expansion at once.  Most likely because digital is a far more popular platform to get video game clients and expansions now days than boxed, save for the ever expensive Collector’s Edition.

This feature also doubles up theory that soon after Rezzed their first Beta Test for HoT will start.  And of course why not?  It is a perfect chance to jump in to get feedback as quickly as possible so as to be ready when their not-so-secret deadline of August 28th* roles around for launching it.

*The game’s 3rd Anniversary.  Why wouldn’t they take the opportunity to make it a huge two-part celebration of launch on top of old launch?  It is going to happen.  I know, the moon told me so!
