Valiance Online seeks developers

Want a job? Silver Helm Studios has posted a notice today declaring that it’s looking for remote developers on its City of Heroes-influenced indie superhero MMORPG Valiance Online. It’s a bit unorthodox, since the pay isn’t salaried but rather comes in the form of future profit-sharing. Here’s the posting:

Superheroes Wanted! Valiance Online is an in-development sci-fi/superhero MMORPG which was recently Greenlit on Steam. We’re looking for developers for our “virtual studio” (all positions are remote). Please note, these are independent contractor, profit-share positions (there is no upfront salary). The positions we are currently looking to fill are listed below.
– 3D Character Artists
– 3D Environment Artists
– Gameplay Programmers

The full list of positions can be found on Valiance Online’s forums. The game picked up a former City of Heroes animator last December.

If you don’t mind working for a company that hasn’t gotten anything out of alpha testing in six years, has a string of broken websites and abandoned FaceBook sites across the web, advertises famous animators as employees rather than consultants, and lets the project itself run without a manager for a year and a half… then VO is for you!
Do the research before you sign on. This company has decent PR, and has produced a pre-Alpha, but here’s betting that’s all they ever produce. They can’t even secure reliable web hosting at present.

SomewhatEclectic A Dad Supreme This model is used all the time, just most of us aren’t used to reading about it I guess. It is sort of like an internship with benefits… an internship (most of the time) doesn’t pay you at all – the understood reward is the experience itself, along with something to put on your resume.

In cases like this, you’re getting a bit more. You’re getting in on a project that the work you will be doing will be a  personal investment. So your time spent on the job actually becomes a part of the end-product and the better everyone does, the more everyone makes so it is actually a great model for those in a position to work this way.

Fortunately this can be done especially these days, and it works out for both parties. I can’t wait to see how this all turns out. Seems to be an excellent team of people and the progress has been amazing so far. The Pre-Alpha has been a ton of fun and I mean wow… we’re not even in Alpha, much less Beta yet. Good job guys if you’re reading this!

I think Eliot used to report on them during his Mild Manner Report column occasionally, when it started to focus on hero games in general.

RicharddeLeonIII ManastuUtakata A Dad Supreme Valkyriez You know, I don’t think she posts in threads about directly competing projects. One of them she left due to “philosophical differences”. Come to think of it, I can’t recall ever seeing any H&V news on Massively-that-was.

jgauthier45 RicharddeLeonIII Cujo H I just hope both do well, we need more superhero mmos.  Competition is a good thing to get developers off their keisters.

RicharddeLeonIII Cujo H From everything I’ve seen VO seems to be chugging along in the right direction.  Out of the two of them, VO is the only one I’ve seen with footage of their build environment, current game play, and current tool set (plus tools they have put to pasture)

I haven’t seen anything out of CoT at all as far as where they are development wise, etc.  Maybe VO just has a better media guy?

Cujo H I like to believe they are making sure the game is of a higher quality rather than a fly by night operation.
