H1Z1 will offer optional ‘monthly passes’ for battle royale

Daybreak president John Smedley has informally announced via Twitter that the studio’s zombie survival MMO H1Z1 is getting a sub — sort of.

“We’ve decided to offer a monthly pass for BR [battle royale] for $6.99 (699 SC),” he tweeted. “It’s coming in the next few days. We are seeing much higher usage of BR and we’re very excited about it and wanted to offer an alternative to event tickets.”

Smed first floated the idea of a season pass for the battle royale game mode back in February, when he polled his followers for suggested pricing for such a pass. “H1Z1 is not just a game,” he reminded them. “We view it as a platform for other games. Battle royale is just the start.”

The game is in early access alpha on Steam.

Update: Daybreak’s arclegger has posted a lengthy Reddit thread to explain the new model.

We’ve heard the massive amount of feedback about people not wanting to have to use event tickets and would rather just pay a flat fee and play BR forever without having to pay for event tickets, and this is why we chose to offer the monthly pass system. The Monthly pass is $6.99 and grants you 30 calender days of unlimited Battle Royale access. This includes more Battle Royale server types we add in the future such as 1st person only which we are working on right now. During this 30 day period you will not consume any event tickets you may have.

People on the reddit forum are pissed, pissed, pissed about this.
The game is in Alpha and is rife with hackers. Players already paid $20 for EA, the core game is screwed and now they want to charge a sub for part of an alpha F2P game.

Daybreak really needs to pull their heads from their asses here.

Why is this not picked up as part of the station pass ?

So, rather than charge a subscription to the whole game, they’re planning to charge for each “platform”? Gross. Good luck with that.

Cial00 Wow.  That’s what it feels like these days.  All these game concepts sounds like crap my friends thought up in high school that would be “good” games.

Sounds like a good deal for the short term. I don’t know if they can keep BR interesting enough for people to buy access every month. This also should probably come with whatever the All-Access sub benefits are for H1Z1.

Even without BR, the base survival game is so much more stable and has as much potential as its competitors.

Oy. Go away, Smed. This should not be a thing until early access is gone.

It’s been about a month since I have played, but unless they have dropped the the rate that tickets appear in containers I will happily stick to those. Once early access is gone I will start thinking about paying the optional sub.

I’m of two minds about this. One, it feels weird that it’s going to a sub for that mode. The other side of me feels it’s better than spending money to get a ticket (which they aren’t charging now though) to enter a match and die in a few scant minutes. Monthy pass i could fail at all the BRs i want, for a relatively small amount per BR. Single ticket matches though would add up, especially if i’m sucking bad. Which i do.

So, yeah. Should it all be free? Probably, it seems to be the reason a lot of people are playing it right now, but i understand they need to actually fund the game.
