Starship Empire gives you command of your own ship and crew

How much would a decent intergalactic starship cost? If you said $10,000, you are totally dreaming — but you also might be in luck if you’re willing to settle for a mere video game. A new indie project, Starship Empire, is asking for $10K on Kickstarter to purchase better artwork for this stellar ship simulator.

Starship Empire gives you command of not only your own ship but a crew as well, and then it sets you loose to trade, explore, and get into a whole heck of a lot of real-time PvP fights. The big twist with this game is that a lot of the action takes place inside the ship as you order your crew around. The developer is billing it as “Star Control meets FTL plus multiplayer.”

The game promises an intuitive interface and a “hybrid” permadeath system. Starship Empire is being developed by one man, Bruno Campolo, and will rely on a free-to-play model with microtransactions to bring in the dough.

stiqy Wow, that sounds awesome.  I’ll add it to my list of games to get inspiration from.  Thanks.

Sundog was ahead of its time in terms of seamless on-ship and off ship action. Dunno if you played it, but your basic ship could be upgraded with many new systems in terms of engine shields, weapons, cargo, etc. You could land on various planets and seamlessly leave your ship to walk around town. Or drive the cargo module like a truck to pick up goods, etc. It has lots of RPG and 4X elements… picking up missions, trading, etc.  You could go from space battles to shoot-outs in cities.  There is some amazing game design DNA to splice into what you are doing.

stiqy , what from Sundog would you want to see in the game?  I’m always taking enhancement requests :)

Huxys yeah, the uniforms are passable but the console screens definitely have to be changed before release

dirtyklingon yes!! There is much interior artwork that is left to be done

I appreciate the comments about the PvP… it’s definitely not for everyone.

Rebel Engie Stormwaltz more than one company has delivered a “sit on your bridge and tell pixels to go have fun for you” game. None has been successful because it turns out, that’s not actually fun once the novelty wears off. It’s at best a casual diversion for a while.

But here’s your chance to put your money where your dreams are. Again.

I was interested until I got to the part about PvP.

Having PvP in a game like this sounds interesting and exciting on paper, but I’ve been around enough to know that it always ends up being a pair of ninja dudebros in pink undies ganking and gloating. Pass.

Yes, that’s been The Dream, since the launch of STO.
Also a real sense of exploration and discovery.
But oh well.

I’m very interested in games that allow crew management (I still harbor a secret dream of turning STO’s ship interiors and Bridge Officers into a mini-Sims game), but I’m just… not interested in PvP. I’ll pass on the Kickstarter, but keep an eye on it.

I think I’ll stick to Starbound, but kudos to them anyway.
