Final Fantasy XIV previews ‘Before the Fall’ update

It's coming down.
Things are not going well in Final Fantasy XIV. In the game world, that is, not the real world. The first part of the 2.5 patch saw the Scions of the Seventh Dawn suffer a noteworthy loss, and all appearances indicate that it’ll get worse before it gets better. The most recent preview of 2.55’s content seems to back up that idea, showing some previews of the content to be found in the game’s main scenario and the epic battle on the Steps of Faith outside of Ishgard.

Notable features include a sort of lockout barrier on the Steps of Faith that hasn’t been seen before and confirmation that players will be taking part in the fighting, complete with one of the great wyrms towering over the battlefield. (Not Nidhogg, though, as it doesn’t appear to be missing an eye.) What all of this will mean isn’t a question anyone will have to speculate on for long, fortunately, as the patch goes live on March 31st.

Lctwo I wouldn’t worry about it. This game has a completely seperate story. There are some references injected here and there to past games, but you could totally enjoy this without having played every FF ever.

I really want to give this game a go, but I’m a bit hesitant for two reasons (1) I’ve never played through a FF game and would prefer to play through several of the more acclaimed previous installments, and (2) I find myself culling through SP steam library at the moment.

I do so need to catch up on the main story.  I only just recently finished it before the patches.

Short of the Main Scenario Quests that lead in to current narrative events, there isn’t a huge amount of open map content. There are the Hunts out there, but the rewards gain for them is pretty slow. There is also the crafting stuff to do, of course.
By and large, though, endgame is still gobs of dungeons and raids. Fun, in my opinion, but if you’re looking for lots to do in the map beyond leveling up a new class via FATEs, you’re outta luck.

Don’t give me ideas. The pigtails hold a lot of fertile imagination. >.>
(Where as I can ascertain from the negative response, I can rest assure the bellies of large dragons maybe empty of Lalafells. /phew )
Edit: Removed the unnecessary flounce.

Eliot. It would be most excellent if you did an article on things to do before the expansion drops. Coming back to the game after a long hiatus, and leveling a new character, I feel a bit overwhelmed with all that they’ve added since I last played.

Haven’t played the game in about a year now, curious what has changed.  When I left the game we had been raiding coil for a while, and had all of the instanced encounters on farm.  Housing hadn’t been added yet, so I know that is one thing to have changed.

Has more depth been added to the game world?  I left because at end game it was kind of a lobby based game for me, where I just sat in town LFG to grind gear day after day.  Wasn’t much to do in the world at max level other than that.  Has much changed?
