Halo Online is coming to Russia only

Several years ago Halo fans were excited to learn that their favorite franchise was set to receive the MMO treatment. While that project ultimately did not pan out, it looks as though there may be a do-over of sorts. That’s right: Halo Online is coming! To Russia only!

Wait, what?

Indeed, the popular sci-fi shooter will be released in Russia as a free multiplayer shooter set on a space station. Halo Online will be a PC exclusive and is currently working toward a closed beta test for this spring in the region. It’s being developed by 343 Industries and Saber Interactive while it will be published by Innova Systems.

For those wondering whether the game might some day come to their home region, the official FAQ offers this shred of hope: “Right now our focus is on learning as much as we can from the closed beta period in Russia. Theoretically, any expansion outside of Russia would have to go through region-specific changes to address player expectations.”

It’s probably too awful and shallow to merit launching anywhere besides a country run by a delusional asshat

Enjoy? For some reason I have the lowest expectations for this.

CrowingOne Oh God, please be right about MCC on PC. I’ve loved Halo ever since the first all the way through 4 (even Halo Wars), but I can’t justify getting an Xbox One just yet. Please… Pleeease…

Who cares? I mean, great for Russia – I’m all for publishers recognizing that different regions prefer their games delivered differently (*cough* ffs, Capcom; no one outside of Japan wants to play Monster Hunter on handhelds with PS2 graphics. Why the sh** doesn’t the West get the gorgeous Chinese PC MMO Monster Hunter Online too!?! *cough*). That’s great for Russian gamers. And Sabre will do a good job since they handled the Halo Anniversary Edition and have the experience with the thing already.

But for everyone else; who cares? It’s like Call of Duty Online. If you want Halo, go check the bargain bin of your local game shop, because there’s some pre-owned Halo games in there no doubt. They’re kind of ubiquitous; ’tis the result of being super successful ;)

I guess the fact that Microsoft has kept Halo off of the PC for, what, about a decade here? Yeah, that sort of stings. But again, there’s SO MANY FPS’ out there. Has anybody really been pining so much for Halo that they’ve ignored Destiny, Killzone, Borderlands, Call of Duty, Titanfall, RAGE, Bioshock, Team Fortress 2, Unreal Tournament 2K15… there are a LOT. There’s plenty to play. Let Russia have this one ;)

Even more surprising than the Russian-only is the PC-only part; after all, we haven’t seen a Halo on PC since what, Halo 2?  ;)  (I’m not really counting Spartan Assault because it isn’t really the same Halo, it’s just set in that universe.)

You’d think the Xbone Master Chief Collection would have been a rather grand way for PC gamers to catch up on where the franchise has gone over the years, but no.  We don’t even get that.

alexjwillis dirtyklingon Halo 1 came out on PC and is still played and modded to this day. People have modded the entire second game into it last time I checked, and probably much much more now.

I agree though, it would have been nice if they had all came out on PC, and with mod support.
