Shroud of the Avatar prepares for Release 16 with a focus on performance

How far we've come yet.

The last Shroud of the Avatar release saw a shift over to Unity 5 and a number of improvements and changes to the game, but it came at the cost of the game’s performance. Release 16, which is due out today, is taking a step back and focusing more heavily on cleaning up bugs and performance, with several items being held back despite originally having been placed on the release schedule.

Items pruned due to the engine shift include player-made books, the cover system, and Steam achievements. The release still contains plenty of new content, including a new Grand Tour quest, a variety of bugfixes, and expansions to several regions of the game. Players involved in the game’s ongoing development and testing should take a look at the rundown of the changes and follow the instructions to start exploring what’s new.

I’ll admit to being fascinated by SotA and CU. The combat I’ve seen for the former seemed odd though. I wish both teams the best, and am hopeful that some innovation will come out of one or both.

Did they fix the super clunky slow paced combat yet?  Because that would seem to be a much bigger issue then “performance”.

bardamu1999  “they know what they like, and they don’t much care if you know about the new game or not” I miss that feeling! (misses SWG)

Tierless It seems to be an active community, but not in the usual ways.  This site for example, and reddit have virtually no SotA presence, but the official forums are very active, and a bunch of community hub sites as well.  There’s a bunch of in-game activities which are happening all throughout R16, so I’d say even though the community is very active for this game, they seem to keep very much to themselves and there’s not much evangelizing like you see with so many other games out there.  It’s like SotA fans all seem to be mostly old UO folk, they know what they like, and they don’t much care if you know about the new game or not.  :D

This game seems pretty interesting but fans seem a bit quiet about it when I see articles pop up around the interwebs. I figured with so many backers we would see more comments when it gets some articles. Maybe its because the MMO mode is optional? Just an observation /shrug.

This mmorpg is the first in a very, very, very long time to be truly innovative.  It will not be for everyone, particularly the theme parked mmo fans, but if you like attention to detail and using your mind then I think it would be a great fit.  I played in Release 4 and thought it was going to bomb but after seeing how far they have come (played Release 15) I’m a dedicated follower again.  Keep it up SotA ;)

I’m getting so sick of steam achivements as a ‘goal’ for developers at all. :)

But glad to see them focus on bug fixing.

These things happen in development, no big deal. I am really keen to get into this game… I missed the early crowdfunding efforts.
