Star Citizen whale talks purchases vs. donations

Right in half.

If you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past couple of years and have no clue about the crowdfunded beast that is Star Citizen, a new article at Wired will bring you up to speed.

Not in a hurry, mind you, since it’s a lengthy piece featuring everything from an interview with a dude who’s spent over $22,000 backing the game to tidbits including the fact that Cloud Imperium asked Denis Leary to provide the voiceover work for its latest in-fiction spaceship commercial. The company ultimately declined due to Leary’s $100,000 fee.

What about the whale, though, one Wulf Knight of Madison, Wisconsin? Does he have any regrets about his pledges given the fact that Star Citizen has yet to ship? “Some people think, ‘I put a hundred bucks into this game and you owe me this and this and this,'” Knight says. “No. Your $100 entitles you to just as much as my 22 grand does, which is zero. You gave them money to make this game. You’re not buying anything; it’s a donation.”

I read the whole article online, and not just the bits and pieces you extracted, but yes, IMO the article is negative because of those few statements – even if most people I’ve talked to say it’s “balanced”.

I actually ran across this by chance today in my print copy of Wired.  I highlighted the following:

(On the story cover, print version only): “Nostalgic gamers have given Chris Roberts more than $75 million to build the most ambitious space adventure ever.  What have they gotten in return?  Virtual fish tanks and digital spaceships they can’t fly.”

“for every would-be player who thinks Roberts is the savior of hardcore PC gaming – George Lucas crossed with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto – there’s one who thinks him a charlatan, a 21st-century snake-oil salesman.”

“there’s another wrinkle to it: expertly crafted crowdfunding campaigns like Cloud Imperium’s manage to replicate the pleasures of playing a game.”

“Roberts has already succeeded in building his vast universe – inside each of [the Backers’] minds.”

That about sums it up for me.

Darkwalker75 GeneMartin2 breetoplay Alright gang, thanks for the heads up. I’ll be sure to use that in the future for big issues like these. By and large, the Massively community is pretty sweet and can discuss even controversial issues with a decent level of civility. I’d rather support that continuing to be the case.

Yes, that’s what I did.
After countless reports and nothing happening, I figured I would try do that instead.
It resulted in the response above and his is the response I got by mail.

“Thanks for the heads-up, Darkwalker. The Livefyre moderation panel for this
version of Livefyre is terrible compared to the old one, that’s meant we’ve
surely missed some reports, especially in the really big threads. I can’t even
tell you how many times we’ve banned Manzes, and he always comes back. He’s
banned on his current name now and his posts should all be in the process of
deleting — if you see him pop back up, drop us a tip — it’s way faster. We
appreciate it!”

So in the future it may be a better way of dealing with the major issues like Manez at least.

breetoplay Sure, do you mean like the tip thing you also use for new stories? I thought the report function was for these kinda issues.

breetoplay  Thank You!  I came really close to replying to a couple of his posts.  Glad my resolve held out long enough for you to step in.  It’s greatly appreciated.

Thanks for this.

After repeatedly flagging his comments with nothing happening, I though it worth trying to use the “tips” method instead to alert the mods.
Seems that was a better way to do it than flagging the comments.

I’m not sure there is any words to describe this guy, I certainly don’t know how to do it.

Hey guys… Manzes has been banned for continued trolling, which is going to make a lot of these comments threads nonsensical, unfortunately, as his posts start blinking out of existence. If you spy him again, will you drop us a tip? We can mop up problem posters much faster that way. Thanks peeps!

manzes rioinsignia “The passes werea actually a better way to thank the backers.”
Thank?  By making them pay for them? So, not a “cash grab” then lol.  PMSL.
“And they were sold with people knowing that they woukd come later.”
So, nothing like your attempts to make it sound awful how people have bought SC packages, only to come back later?  Yes.?
See how I can too twist an event to make it sound like there’s something nefarious going on.
