Crowfall teases female Ranger archetype

Darn it, if you had just kept her hair brown...

ArtCraft has posted a Crowfall week-at-a-glance update that contains plenty of interesting nuggets. Chief among them is the reveal of the female Ranger archetype. She’s got a wolf pet in the concept art, but the devs say that “it’s just a picture,” so don’t get your hopes up for automatic companion badassery if you roll the Ranger.

Elsewhere this week, the design team did “a full pass” on land ownership details and fealty trees, while the tech team spent time making changes to Crowfall’s combat system including additional work on movement and targeting.

Good reply.  DAoC over a decade ago went through the search for balance between many unique classes.  It never found an ideal balance, but the game was great.  When it comes right down to it, you need to look at MMO combat on a group level as opposed to individual classes being balanced- that’s for MOBAs to worry about.

Is it true that Crowfall has gender locked classes? So I must be a female to be a ranger? ;(

Possibly the closest thing i seen to wow in terms of combat artwork transitions and fluidity. Gathering from the little clips we got.

I think a lot of the negativity is bog standard MMO stuff, and a large chunk of people that disagree with the Kickstarter model of grabbing money, ramping up the hype, then falling short of the promised deliveries.

I have funded a few KS projects. Massively, Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen.
The only one I regret is SC as its turning into a complete shit fest of feature creep and community toxicity.

Crowfall made the mistake of screaming “HEY WE’RE DIFFERENT…” then whispered, “…just like all the other MMO’s”  and hoped people wouldn’t hear that part.

Koshelkin  Second reveal? They already revealed all the classes, they are just showing off the artwork for the female ranger. Sheesh.

samruck  Its actually race locked classes.  The humans are all getting male and female variants.  Female centaurs are also going to be a thing.

Evade2015 seventhbeacon samruck Well, the short answer is, they’re not going for balance on a 1v1 scale at all.  This is not a game to solo, this is a game to work collectively with other players, either in a guild or on the same faction.  Some classes and builds will definitely be more deadly, and other builds can be ineffective.  They give the players lots of choices to build what they want to their preferred playstyle, but by giving these character creation options there is always the room to ‘fail’ or choose less than adequate build options for the archetype.

Within reason, anyway.  If something is far too broken they’ll tweak it.

The balance they are going for is on the larger group/faction combat level.  You can have a squad of the nastiest, deadliest archetype build in the game, but without support characters, especially crafters, they’ll not be able to compete effectively.  You literally cannot get gear without crafters, either, making them vital to any successful game strategy.

It’s a territory conquest game with sieges, caravans, and contested resource locations, so the balance is going to be determined by well-organized groups rather than just optimal cookie-cutter gank machine builds.  (Though a gank machine build supported by the right team will be something to truly fear, I bet :D)
