The button is not an MMO… but it’s sure something

So it goes.

Two days ago, Reddit launched its April Fools’ Day prank. It’s a button. A single button with a countdown timer next to it that’s running for 60 seconds. Anyone can press the button to reset the countdown timer, but you can press it only once. That’s it. No one knows what it does, what will happen when it hits zero, nothing.

It’s also turned into an impromptu culture, with a huge number of threads about pressing or not pressing the buttons and more than half a million registered participants on the site. The whole thing is comparable in some ways to last year’s “Twitch Plays Pokémon” group effort, except that this time around there isn’t even a game at the heart of it. Just… a button. A single, mysterious button.

Maybe you should press the button.

A perfect example of why gamers get the games they deserve :)

Sorenthaz It’s going to be very hard, and I would venture impossible, to cheat the system in this case because first it requires you to be logged in and second it only can be done once and on accounts that existed before 4/1. This means you can’t create new accounts, and you can’t clear your cookies to click again because it flags your account as already having pressed the button.

Ugh…don’t remind me how much time I sunk into that show only to receive a huge kick in the groin from the finale

I wonder if it’s like that movie The Box, where a person pushes the button and kills someone else in the world.
Wouldn’t that be fascinating?

You get a colored flair icon based on how many seconds passed when you clicked the button and when someone else clicked the button.

The longer the better.

I pressed it. I at least waited until it was in the high 40’s range, though. All those complaining about how this is not a game… you’re right. It’s not. It *does* however look like a nice social experiment, and I am all for social experiments.
