The Daily Grind: How long do you have your subscriptions set up for?

You have clearly been preparing for this day.

I had not put my Final Fantasy XIV account on anything more extended than month-by-month billing for the longest time. Which is kind of weird, when you think about it. There has never been a question in my mind of whether or not I would be playing again next month, so it’s kind of ridiculous to think that I wouldn’t be signed up for several months at a time… but for some reason, I just went along on month-to-month billing.

Of course, that’s not always unusual. I have friends who will subscribe to games for months or years while still being on monthly subscriptions, and I know of others who quit games in a month but always subscribe on three-month packages for no readily explained reason. So what about you? How long do you have your subscriptions set up for? Or do you just not subscribe to anything any longer, even with an optional subscription?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I try to be efficient about it and decide in advance how long I -think- I’ll want to play in a chunk. Usually I’m right and it works out finanically, but sometime I’m wrong and I stop playing with a pile of time left, or I end up playing longer and next thing I know I’ve been paying a rolling monthly sub for half a year. :p
I’ve got better at it the last few years though. The TSW Lifetime sub has been a good deal, AO year sub this year as well. No money to Trion was also a good call because right now I’m on the fence about uninstalling Rift entirely. The one I did derp up this time was Eve Online. Put a 3 month sub on last year and did indeed play it for about 3 months with a friend, then went to play other stuff and forgot about cancelling until I’d got billed for another 3 months. I think I logged in twice to skill change in that 3 months >.<

I have lifetimes for two of my favorite games (Star Trek Online and The Secret World). I try to budget a lifetime for any game I truly love.

Other games, I tend to pay month-to-month because I never know when I’ll get restless for something different.

When playing SWTOR, I usually go for the two-months non-renewing deal. It seems to suit the way I play that game.

None now :). But top of the list if I do sub again (in no order) is: Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
