HEX opens PvE content, announces $100K global tournament

Thanks to the latest update, HEX: Shards of Fate fans can now enjoy solo PvE content that boasts 30+ new AI enemies in the digital trading card MMO. Each of the four tiers in The Frost Ring Arena will throw four champions and one boss at players who will battle using either the new PvE cards or any existing PvP cards. The campaign ends after beating all tiers or losing three rounds; players, however, get to keep all loot acquired during the run regardless of their finish. This update also includes a new card interface and an upgrade to the deck building interface (to differentiate between PvE and PvP decks) as well as new deck management and chat systems.

Just because HEX has introduced PvE, don’t think its going soft on PvP. Gameforge has announced a global PvP tournament later this year with prizes totaling at least $100,000. Registered NA and EU players who want to test their mettle against others will earn qualification points through daily tournament play; ten points will grant automatic eligibility to participate in the 12 qualifier tournaments. The winners of each of those tourneys will then be invited to compete against each other in Lake Forest, California.

To those starting out new: I’d recommend starting with either the Orc or the Dwarf starter, the other two are good as well for Arena (the PvE part), but orcs or dwarfs are reasonably fast decks and not very difficult mechanics-wise. Do all the tutorials, then start Arena and stay in Tier 1 for a while. After that, you will have a few options to tweak your deck – it’s just so much fun to see your cards learning entirely new tricks with equipment ;-)
And don’t forget that this is but the start of the PvE stuff. More good things will come later, I expect – what I’ve seen so far looks good and I can’t wait to see more.

Copyright law needs some severe changes. copyrighting words is ridiculous and so damn exploitable. It’s anti consumer and anti free market

mjfife85 eLdritchMD Zulika_Mi_Nam Zophie Winters spacetail I’m sorry but I just don’t agree. The games don’t share an IP, they play out very differently and are only similar in basic structure… which is true for literally EVERY genre out there…

Every shooter has “capture the flag”, “frag(as in kill)” “kill streaks”, etc.

Almost every RPG uses “experience points” and “stats”, I can probably name 10 that have a “Fireball” spell that works practically identically. etc.

Every fighter game EVER works with the exact same mechanics.

Every Moba using pretty much the exact same map and game mode… LoL vs. Dota2 is probably the best comparison to the MTG/Hex debate. Show lol and dota to someone who doesn’t know and they will barely see a difference.

This is not the tabletop market where Wizards can just bully out their competition by sueing them, knowing their opponent don’t have the money to fight a legal battle. iteration is the name of EVERY genre in video games and Hex is NOT the same game as MTG (I also happen to play MTG, I just don’t think MTGO is good enough to be worth my money). Hero powers, charges, the way Shards work differently from Lands, sockets, different mechanics and keywords, a heavier focus on tribes. All this makes Hex different enough from MTG. Of course we’re not talking groundbreaking differences but who says those are needed? My point still stands, if Wildstar isn’t in breach of Blizzard’s copyright and LoL/Dota aren’t breaching eachother’s copyrights, then Wizards doesn’t have a leg to stand on. All they have is a bunch of highly questionable trademarked words (phases, really? I can name a dozen games that use “deployment phase”… someone call WIzards!! =(( ) and THAT’S why they are sueing as aggressively as they are. They know they probably won’t win, but they have the money for drawn out legal battles and they’ll dispute anyone who they think doesn’t. They tried the exact same thing with Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon, Ascension, the warhammer 40k TCG and the WoW TCG..

mjfife85 eLdritchMD Zulika_Mi_Nam Zophie Winters spacetail Well, if Hex lose i cant wait to see hasbro suit for Pillars of Eternity. PoE is even closer to Baldur’s Gate than Hex is to Magic. Obsidian not only took realtime/turn based combat system, many class designs and other mechanics but they created game that looks the same as BG in HD. I have hope that Hex case will be dismissed in full, as repercussion for industry in which almost any 2 games from same genre share huge number of mechanics and ideas would be disastrous.

eLdritchMD Zulika_Mi_Nam Zophie Winters spacetail Wizards has a little of a leg to stand on. I’m an avid Magic player and playing this game is very identical to MTG. I think the big thing they will have to change to get off of them is to take out the “Phases” They call each phase just like in Magic. Main Phase, Attack Phase, Blockers Phase, Second Main Phase. You even have to let cards “Resolve” which is another Magic key word. A lot of the cards are structured just like Magic Cards. This game is a love letter to Magic and I hope they can keep it around, but there are a few things in here they will most likely be forced to change around.

Downloading it now, thought I ‘d give it a trial run as I really enjoy the card battle games, the PVE content really helps you re-balance after you have lost a lot of PVP games

Is there matchmaking already? I don’t mind losing 10 games in a row if I eventually walk away a better or smarter player, but losing because you’re opponent has nothing but rare and ultra-rares, having 6/6 on turn 2 or 3, not only teaches me nothing usefull at all, it also makes me want to /uninstall. Which I did.

Zulika_Mi_Nam Zophie Winters spacetail Thanks for the links and info, I’ve been curious about it for a whole now. Hopefully this doesn’t end with one less card game out there :C

Solo only seems kind of meh.  I’m a heavy soloer but there’s no incentive without group content.  I solo because I know that it will have some relevance when I play with my friends later.

If anyone wants to give Hex a go and needs some common or uncommon cards to get started with the Arena – friend me ingame and send me a mail, telling me what shard suits you want to play =)

just “eLdritch” in Hex.
