Daybreak dev muses about mobile Vanguard diplomacy game

Vanguard’s diplomacy system was always one of the most-talked about features of that late fantasy title, using a card minigame to simulate conversational conflict between the character and NPCs. While the game shuttered last July, there may be a possibility brewing of bringing back this beloved system in a mobile format.

Daybreak Programmer Timothy Lochner is testing the waters on Twitter regarding a possible mobile version of Vanguard’s diplomacy system: “What would my @vanguardsoh peeps say about the diplomacy sphere being turned into a mobile game? Obvs have no green light. Just wondering.”

Could Vanguard be coming back in card game form? And if it did, would you play it? Only time will tell!

Update: Lochner has posted more on his blog to clarify that he has no reason to think a “green light” would ever be given and didn’t mean to give the impression that it was a possibility. “Sorry to say, nothing is brewing. It would be a neat challenge to design diplomacy as a stand-alone card game (holy crap, a lot of context would have to be filled to replace the actual game of Vanguard) but it ultimately is just not a thing right now.”

Excellent use of a minigame to make it a pretty awesome and important feature in an MMO. It makes relatively little sense to exist outside of Vanguard, however. It’s tie-ins and break of pace is what made Diplomacy great; as a system on it’s own it really doesn’t stand to well, I think.

dorn2 What has Everquest done lately that makes it any better than what Vanguard was? Personally, if Vanguard received even a third of the attention Everquest 2 did, it’d be miles ahead of anything SOE’s/Daybreak’s done since the original Everquest lineup.
Everquest as a name is meaningless anymore and Daybreak only makes it less relevant each day by not assuring us that their focus is on what brought them to the dance. There was a time when Everquest was known by non-MMO players and now it’s barely even in the glossary of current MMO players.

Hanthos As far as I know they’re just sitting on it, most likely to do nothing with ever.

Considering SOE had closed smaller card games in the past, I can’t see a mobile version of Diplomacy lasting more than two years.
(Still bitter about Vanguard’s closure as well).

The diplomacy system was the part that I really took to in Vanguard. The other parts never really grabbed my interest all that much, I figured those were for other people, and I was happy for them. Still, I did like diplomacy. I like diplomacy in general, as I don’t think we really have enough options for talking solving problems without violence in video games. We usually turn to violence as our first option in escapism, which says worrying things about our species, at least from a symbolic perspective.

Anyway, I was and am a fan of this. I’m leery of it being a mobile title, though, as I find it hard to relax with a mobile device. It’s not the kind of power house that a PC is, so I wouldn’t be able to have it open at the same time as a more fully fledged video game, marathon binging in a browser, and a bunch of other things. I’m absent-minded, so I’m easily distracted, and I find I work better that way. Phones and tablets aren’t really so given to that experiencing, focusing more on a fullscreen, one app at a time experience.

So I’d be all for this were it to be released on the PC, and I would pay money for it. Besides, as much as I hate to say this, a PC release would also likely make them think twice about grossly exploitative microtransactions. That they are so incredibly rife on mobiles — making 99~ per cent of games utterly worthless to me — is why I don’t play games on mobiles. I don’t know why I’d want to pay a few hundred currency units for a day’s worth of gaming on a mobile when I could get the same on the PC for fifteen.

I’d pass it over on mobile, then. But a PC release? Definitely up for that.

Has there been any mention of doing something with, or selling the actual Vanguard IP itself?

It’s not just going to be a card game, it’s going to be a card game playing platform! Our blackjack royale addon is especially popular amongst our users and we’re thinking about asking $15 a month for it.

They should allow some other developer pick up Vanguard.  I’d play it again.
