Cloud Imperium clarifies Star Citizen’s Squadron 42 status

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Are you a bit confused about the Squadron 42 component of Star Citizen? So are quite a few other backers, if a mini-brouhaha on the official forums is any indication. Questions about the single-player campaign’s length and accessibility were recently raised following Chris Roberts‘ comments in his most recent 10 for the Chairman video release.

Community manager Ben Lesnick then took to the forums to clarify what’s going on with Star Citizen’s single-player campaign. “Squadron 42 is not any smaller than it was the day we set out to make it. Content isn’t being cut or subdivided or parceled out for extra revenue or anything like that,” Lesnick wrote. “If we mentioned 20 hours in one interview and 50 in another it’s because someone was having two different thoughts about the same amount of content… it’s in no way indicating that we’ve removed anything from the initial pitch, because we absolutely haven’t.”

DPandaren melissamcdon Well the easy answer is that they put more work into it. The hangar is still a work in progress, but one of the most important parts of the hangar, the guy walking around in it, has only recently gotten hair. It’s just not as crucial as making sure the flight mechanics work right.

Did you actually read what the game was supposed to be when you backed it or did you just jump on after watching the demo video?
SQ42 was never supposed to be SC and it was never made a separate deal.
If you look at the kickstarter page they clearly said both single player campaign and Open world sandbox game.

Real quick, Star Citizen is:
A rich universe focused on epic space adventure, trading and dogfighting in first person.
Single Player – Offline or Online(Drop in / Drop out co-op play)
Persistent Universe (hosted by US)
Mod-able multiplayer (hosted by YOU)

melissamcdon A whole solid year and the Hanger still runs like poop. I mean, why does the Arena Commander run better then the Hanger?

Hurbster Only reason why I backed the game originally was when Squadron 42 was suppose to be Star Citizen. Then it went bonkers and made it a separate deal.

Lheiah BobDobalina Celestial Well he said he’s going to be so busy there is a good chance he won’t be doing his weekly videos, so that’s something.

“Chris’s handler was just having an off day, okay? Look, do you know how hard it is keeping that guy in line? Gives us a break here, guys.”

Well, CR is known to be a perfectionist and so he wants things to be more complete and of better quality before showing it to people or let us play it. He’s said so himself on several occations. Then he’s also a visionary with a remarkable and unique view of how to make games. As most people have realized by now he’s not making games as other game makers do. Not only the content, details, fidelity, and immersion, are different, but also how he puts it together by making modules and working with many studios which do their own part.

Many outsiders will try and compare the progress to how other developers do it (for instance ED) and see how different bits and pieces of gameplay and functions are implemented. But that doesn’t mean other developers do it right and CR does it wrong. It’s just different.

Also, ED and other games are simpler to make. The gameplay is simpler and the scope is much simpler than Star Citizen.

So I think the things that appearently are holding up progress don’t necessarily show the right picture and how far the development has come. It’s a paradox, really, that this is perhaps the most open development project ever, with the most information ever of a game in development, and at the same time so much is developed that we don’t see yet. I think it’ll all fall into place in an increased rate this year and next year.

VikingrI agree. Its plain to see that CR is wanting to do as much as possible, and try to keep to their ‘soft’ deadlines. However,  I just wonder if his passion for wanting to get it done right may also be holding things up a bit too much.  Of course,  thats just my opinion.  Ive no proof that is happening.
