Did you watch Game of Thrones last night? I didn’t. I’ll get around to it eventually, though, I’m sure. How about a Game of Thrones MMO? That would be cool, wouldn’t it? Or would it? Or maybe we already have one except it’s called EVE Online, it’s set in space, and there are no women.

Oh, there is this one, but meh. Browser. Bigpoint. I’ll pass.

What about you, MOP readers? Would you play a Game of Thrones MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Sure I would as long as it isn’t done poorly like the telltale games.

It’s too depressing thinking of all of the xXJaimeXx and <***THE HOUND***> player name variations.

I don’t think what makes Game Of Thrones distinctly Game of Thrones would translate well to the sort of MMORPGs that the market (and investors) seem to expect.

If done right, for sure.
Only issue is, it would probably end up being a boring rollercoaster ride like swtor. Relying on the name to get people in the door, then slow content delivery due to slow continued subscription (because a name only gets people in the door, doesn’t keep them there). Not to mention eventual flip to f2p and a vast gap between paid and unpaid players.
So in this reality, no, I probably wouldn’t play it.

ManastuUtakata The only thing you’re missing is some chatter over the series. Like with Lost, Twin Peaks, Breaking Bad, or whatever else. GoT is pretty ingrained into pop culture at the moment.

Game of Thrones MMO? Probably not, though a fantasy type setting for a game that’s similar to EVE? I might be lured into something like that.

All I know is my gut says maybe.

I’ve read the books and I’ll watch the show (or at least the start of it) once it hits Amazon Prime or Netflix, but I would never play an MMO just because of it’s based on a franchise I like*.  The game itself would have to be interesting to me.  Take two games that are, for the most part, identical outside of setting: Game of Throne’s Online and Mayhem in the Time of Dysentery**.  If the latter one isn’t good enough to play then the former isn’t either.

* Except maybe C.J. Cherryh’s Alliance-Union Universe with the Compact Space expansion.  But even then the game would have to be pretty good.

**Mayhem in the Time of Dysentery is, as far as I’m aware, not a real thing.  But if someone decides to make that game I expect a special spot in the credits and a modest kickback.
