EverQuest will run an open beta for its new progression server

Plans are moving forward for EverQuest’s new progression server, and to help fill in the community, Daybreak has posted a new FAQ that explains many of the ins and outs of this developing ruleset.

According to the FAQ, any graphically revamped zones will be present in their new form on the servers but could retain the original population. The Sleeper will be in status at the start, the modern user interface will be used, and some of the events, races, and classes will not be available until the server unlocks them.

Daybreak will be running an open beta for the server to test the reduced experience rate that this server will feature. Testers will be treated to some kind of reward, which may be a backpack.

I remember falling off a boat once and being murdered by a shark. Another time, when the boat went to a small random island, I got off the boat to explore the island and the boat never returned. :'(

Does anyone know, will we have to get boats again to sail to the other continients/islands? That would be so cool! Do you remember people shouting “BOAT!” while you were in the zone, rushing with SoW to get the next boat? Good times :)

I am really looking forward to this and will re-sub just to play it. I can’t wait to get to the Aviak tree in South Karana.

Gah.  Yet another progression server for EQ1 (wasn’t Fippy Darkpaw enough?!) and still none at all for EQ2, even though it’s over 10 years old.

Man, PvPers have been begging for a Kingdom of Sky-locked open PvP server for about 7 years now.  Bah.

Paaperclips flatline4400 uohaloran Fair enough.
There is a torrent that’s like prepatched for p99 that people use successfully.  But if you prefer, I can dig out my ISO’s (which I made from physical cd’s many years ago) and run an MD5 checksum on them for you hehe…  Put keep in mind that the executables and dll’s mostly get replaced with the main download direct from the devs at the p99 site, not to mention they’ve put in some tamper protection (apparently) to prevent hacks and such.

flatline4400 Paaperclips uohaloran To be perfectly honest, the morality of piracy was never my concern. I justified the “free” nature of the game long ago. It’s like you said, now that the game is F2P, it’s not really “stealing” anymore. Plus any copy of Titanium Edition out there wouldn’t give money to SOE/DBG anyway. If you found a copy it’s definitely used or resold. I doubt DBG cares if anyone pirates the game these days. They don’t expect any money from box sales unless it’s the newest expansion.
I’m more worried about security concerns. I don’t trust half of the sources I’ve seen for downloading the game.

Paaperclips uohaloran If you’ve already bought EQ some time in the past, then it’s not really pirating anything if you download an old version of the client…  given the free nature of the client download these days, the piracy argument makes even less sense.

In any case, the real EQ prog server will have the advantage of starting fresh, instead of having like 4-5 years of top end ubers running around, not to mention up to date UI code (because playing with a shitty ancient UI adds nothing to the “classic” experience imho.)
