Elite: Dangerous ups the ante for mining

A big Elite: Dangerous update called Powerplay is on the way, and with it will come significant improvements to the space sim’s mining game. One of the new tools that miners will get is a prospector drone, which will find scan objects to find rich deposits.

“After Powerplay launches, mining will become a more viable route to riches,” the team promises in its recent newsletter. “But we think mining should be a game of risk and reward, so you’ll find high and low intensity extraction sites in human-occupied space, but with pirates swarming the high intensity areas you’ll face greater danger… and greater rewards.”

Over on the official forums, the team posted that it will be running a Mac/PC crossplay test in a few weeks.

wolfyseyes This goes back to the reality of things – if there is a lot of valuable resources a political system would like to have or needs in order to maintain or expand, the last thing you would have to worry about is pirates since most political forces with military would defend it well – if not just for the taxes but in order to survive.

The “big risk/reward” doesn’t exist that stringently in the real world unless one is running illegal goods.

The whole spiel sounds like foisting PvP on folks who just want to PvE except in this case it is combat being foisted on gathers who wish to be competitive.

Finally they are improving the mission system. I have had a huge problem with USS since the beginning. They scream “lazy placeholder”, but for a long while now I’ve feared that they may not of been a placeholder (especially as they even added to it with the Wings update).

So I was very relieved to see that mission targets, such as bounty hunting will be found actually flying in systems. The game desperately needs a mission system that is more than the tutorial system that is currently, and is more fun that random instances.

Damonvile the collection drone part was announced a while back https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=133134
The search drone mentioned above is another separate drone function I believe

I found the whole minigame of mining really tedious after the first few minutes. I saw the drone th8ng and thought it might have been an automation of the collection but ….apparently not

wolfyseyes if you mine at an extraction site (either high or low intensity) then
you do run the risk of pew pew as these are know deposits of ore but
you do not have to mine in those places if you do not wish to. If
you mine elsewhere then you will reduce the risk even further I believe
though no fully remove it though that will it seems further reduce you
profit margin.  Some of the proposed changes look like they will help to
improve the chances of finding out of the way mining ore sites.
Also remember the pew pew doesn’t necessarily mean another player ganking you and is just as likely to be an npc (if solo mode it will be an npc) sort of like a wondering mob in a fantasy mmo agroing you while you hit a node with an axe. This may or may not be a good or bad thing depending on wants for the game :-)
