Shroud of the Avatar

You can get Shroud of the Avatar on Steam for a 25 percent discount this week, according to Update of the Avatar #121. The lengthy post features a bunch of other tidbits as well, including a look at before-and-after screenshots of Vertas Pass with new Unity 5 lighting and high fidelity art assets.

We also get to see some of SotA’s new in-game book covers. Each one is unique and is designed to hint at a book’s contents.

bardamu1999 ClassicCrime yeah i’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it when it gets released, if for no other reason than the fact that they’re trying something unique

ClassicCrime The way the skills work are one of the more interesting things in SotA.

ohforfs Testable.  If you dig the community events and are into the way communities interacted in MMOs back in the 90s and early 00s you could say this is playable, as well.  There’s a lot missing, though, and there’s no hand holding, so both of that combined leave the player with exploring the geography and the mechanics, but nothing like a progression you might be used to or group content is available right now.

camelotcrusade You have to factor in how amazingly niche SotA is, it’s not like anything out there, even indie titles with retro irony aren’t going for the arguably punishing old school vibe SotA has.
Factor in half of the Steam audience are children who recently graduated from CoD on their console, and that even adults seem to have problems determining what a pre-Alpha game is, even thought SotA does everything short of tie this to a brick and hurl it through your window and you get the current negativity.
There’s a small amount of grognard hate I detect as well, people who assumed this game would be UO-2015 or some 80s title with higher graphics and aren’t getting it.

The latest bunch of early access reviews on Steam are punishing this game.  It still has 3 to 1 positive, but some of the negative ones have a surprising amount of disdain for it.  Not a good sign, hope things improve.

ohforfs It is definitely playable, but not yet worth getting if you are looking for a full game. It is still very Alpha though.

Is it worth getting in its current state? Playable?

Yes you can. But a locked skill costs more resource to use. You can talent to reduce that, as well.

The side by sides are definitely impressive, was there also a change to the avatars?

so actually looking at that game for the very first time.. that looks somewhat odd >.> you can set your skills up to be shuffled and dealt to you randomly during combat? but also you can decide not to do that and just put your skills on the hotkey bar, granted you can only put a few on. interesting…
